2002 Elora Mohawk Game Reports

Mohawks Nip Rebels

By Wray Maracle
June 7, 2002

OHSWEKEN - Elora Mohawks ended the three game winning of the Six Nations Red Rebels with a 12-10 victory Friday night at the Gaylord Powless Arena.

Elora broke through early to open the scoring only 1:20 into the contest, but goals by Matt Myke and Eli Hill gave Six Nations they’re only lead of the contest.

The Mohawks connected for the final five goals in the first period for a 6-2 lead while outshooting the Red Rebels 18-15.

A quick goal by Mike Skye only 0:09 into the middle frame ignited a fire under the home squad as they close the gap to 6-4 on Myke’s 2nd goal of the game. But, Elora would connect on the powerplay, which was quickly followed by a goal by Dion Jonathan for a 7-5 count.

Elora would added three consecutive goals in a span of 1:36 and take a 10-5 by the 10:03 mark of the second.

Six Nations Head Coach Jason Johnson must have seen enough as he pulled starting goalie, Ryan McNaughton in favour of Dwight Longboat. The move worked, as the Red Rebels battled back on goals by Jarred Cayuga (13:32), Steve Bomberry (17:09), Red Rebels captain, Mike Montour (17:29) and Huey Johnson (19:17) to trail 10-9 heading into the final period. Six Nations held a 17-16 edge in shots for the second period.

Elora opened up a two goal lead at 1:52 of the third and added another marker at 10:09, while the Red Rebels were firing blanks at Mohawks’ Game MVP and goalie, Graham Cousins.

Cousins would stop all, but one of the 18 shots fired at him in the third period by Six Nations, while his teammates fired 15 at Longboat.

Six Nations outshot Elora 50-49 for the entire contest.

The loss dropped Six Nations back to the .500 level at 6-6-0 and solidly in fourth place in the Far West Division, while Elora at 11-3-0 = 22 points, keeps the heat on the Central West Division leading Halton Hill Bulldogs at 11-1-1 = 23 points. Halton Hills have one game in hand on the second place Mohawks.

ELORA WINS BATTLE OF THE MIDWEST

By Ben Knight, Radio Free Cabbagetown -- ON TOUR!!
May 22, 2002

ELORA -- Adam Rooney led the way with three goals and an assist as the Elora Mohawks rallied, then held on to edge the Halton Hills Bulldogs 9-8, moving into a first-place tie in the OLA Jr. B Midwest Division.

Jeremy Machin got the home side rolling just 1:19 in, with a lunging redirect at the top of the Halton Hills crease. Machin almost made it two just moments later, when he intercepted an ill-advised Halton Hills pass right on the doorstep, and forced a fine save from Bulldog 'tender Josh McNaughton.

Halton Hills battled back with two goals in 25 seconds. Richard Haan faked toward the middle, and buried one just inside the post. Fiery redhead Jimmy Williams followed with a surprising scoring rip from way out on the side boards. Rooney tied things for Elora with a 20-ffot diagonal bounce bomb, but Scott Aitken of the Bulldogs restored the lead, neatly stepping around a screen to beat Graham Cousins in the Elora net with exactly a minute to go.

3-2 Bulldogs after one.

A heads-up play by Rooney got the Mohawks off to a fast start in the second. The Elora captain swatted the ball clean out of Williams' stick, and zoomed home to score. Williams was not pleased, and ended up scuffling with Jamie Rooney in front of the Elora bench.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead at 6:09, with a scoring play of quite delightful simplicity. Jordan Armstrong was coming off the bench when a loose ball rolled right to him. He picked it up, fired from almost 50 feet out, and scored. Moments later, an epic battle broke out between Richard Haan of the Bulldogs and the Elora goalie. Haan broke in alone, and tried about a half dozen fakes. Cousins didn't bite on any of them, making the save easily when the shot finally came. The only other goal of the period came at 12:57, with Haan cashing in a heads-up pass from Jason Ford.

5-3 Bulldogs after two.

Elora stormed back with three straight goals to open the final frame. Scott Wilson stepped beautifully around a defender to score from the high slot, Rob Marshall finished off a running give-and-go, and Tyler Johnston put the Mohawks ahead, warding off several biting slashes in a good scoring surge down the middle.

Jamie Sturgeon managed to squib one past Cousins to tie the game 6-6. Jordan Bosomworth put the Mohawks back in the lead, but Aitken tied it again, unassisted and right off the ensuing faceoff. But Adam Rooney put Elora ahead for good, with a swatting back-to-goal redirect of an incoming shot. Jamie Rooney then bought the Mohawks some insurance, going top corner behind McNaughton. Sturgeon pulled the Bulldogs back at 19:44. Aitken almost scored, heavily screened, from way out. A final last-second chance was stopped. Elora escaped with the win.

Overall, this was an entertaining little lacrosse game. Elora's back in a first-place tie, but they have to visit Onondaga this weekend, Akwesasne next weekend, and they don't play another home game for four weeks. Bizarre bit of scheduling, that. We'll know how good these guys really are when that sequence is over.

I'm not really sure where or when my next game is, but it will be somewhere, and it will be soon.

See you there!

Mohawks Maul Warriors!!!

By Ron Pallister
May 8, 2002

ELORA - The Elora Mohawks outplayed the Spartan Warriors tonight in Jr B action in front of a modest but noisy home crowd in a very cold arena. Spartan netminder Ryan Monaghan played well, being bombarded with balls all game. Graham Cousins played well in the Elora net, but had a much lighter workload. The teams helped referees Jon Watson and Mark Gardonio by cusing them to call only eight penalties, three to Elora and five to Spartan.

If you blinked, you missed the first goal, scored just :05 into the period when Tyler Johnston tossed a perfect pass from the faceoff circle to Adam Rooney on the fly in the center slot, who made two fakes and fired it home to Monaghan's left. Jamie Rooney made it 2-0 after a series of crisp passes with Jordan Bosomworth, Dustin Janssen and Rob Marshall who started the play, jumping on a loose ball in front of his own net. Bosomworth was next to score with an overhand rocket by Monaghan's left shoulder. Jamie Rooney and Midget call-up Jamie Lincoln notched the next pair in short order. Monaghan stoned Adam Rooney on a fast break breakaway. Andrew Buckholder put the Warriors on the board, aided by Joe Murray. With Jamie Hawksbee in the penalty box, Spartan's penalty killers went to work, almost scoring on two occasions while nullifying the Elora power play. Sean Turner potted Elora's sixth goal and Bosomworth closed out the scoring with a gift from an errant Spartan pass while Monaghan was heading for the bench in favour of an extra attacker.

The teams went up and down the floor four times in the first 1:14 of the second, culminating with Danny Booker driving diagonally to the crease, with the help of some good pics, to make it 8-1. With Elora a man short, Spartans Jon Burkholder and Andrew Burkholder each had great shots, coming rapidly, both turned away by an improved Graham Cousins. Justin Hawksbee had an excellent chance when he left the sin-bin, cut to the Elora goal and received a fast break pass, taking a great shot, turned aside by Cousins. Jamie Rooney upped the lead to 9-1. Then we had the featured bout. Warriors' Jon Young and Elora's Travis Fowlie squared off in the corner to Cousin's right, duking it out admirably for a couple of rounds before the refs stepped in. I'd have to call this one a draw. Spartan's Reg VanVelzen made a great opportunity with his team shorthanded, scooping up a loose ball in his own end and running the length of the floor and aiming a wicked shot to the lower left after spinning off a defender, but, once more, Cousins was up to the task. John Foley got a power play marker, followed shortly by Bosomworth shooting three tricky shots in succession to finally find the twine. The Spartan defense left something to be desired tonight, leaving Monaghan alone far too much. 11-1 after two periods.

Jon Snider took a whole ten seconds to bulge the twine in the third. Monaghan stoned Adam Rooney on yet another Elora Breakaway, but he got a shorthaned goal several minutes later. Greig Hunter scored the Warriors' second goal with 3:23 left, the game's last goal. Elora 13, Spartan 2.

It's hard to figure what happened to the Warriors tonight. They beat Sarnia 14-7 on May 5th, Sarnia having beaten the Mohawks 13-11 a week earlier. The Spartan squad displayed a ton of talent that just didn't gel on this night

Spartan Players Of The Game: Ryan Monaghan, despite the score. He must have turned the orb away close to 60 times. Andrew Buckholder, good two way game.

Elora Players Of The Game: Jordan Bosomworth, good two way game. Graham Cousins, although he didn't have the volume of shots to handle, almost all the shots on him were "quality" shots. Referees Jon Watson and Mark Gardonio called a good game. Summary

Spartan: Andrew Burkholder 1,0(2); Jon Young (5); Justin Hawksbee (4); Joe Murray 0,1; Greig Hunter 1,0.

Elora: Graham Cousins 0,1; Travis Fowlie 0,3(7); Adam Rooney 2,1; Jon Snider 1,0; Rob Marshall 0,3; Danny Booker 1,2; Jamie Rooney 3,1; Jamie Lincoln 1,0; Jordan Bosomworth 3,2; John Foley 1,0; Tyler Johnston 0,4; Dustin Janssen 0,2; Sean Turner 1,1.

Elora Outpaced By Sarnia 13-11

By Ron Pallister
April 27, 2002

ELORA -- The Sarnia Cha-Co Pacers defeated the hometown Elora Mohawks 13-11 tonight in front of a large and rowdy crowd. It's the first time in several years Elora has not won their home opener. Sarnia had trouble keeping pace with the Mohawks for the first 50 minutes, but turned on the jets bigtime resulting in a 6 goal flurry in a 8:25 span to go from 3 goals behind to 3 goals ahead.

Pacer Sean Pollock opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the game when he picked up a rebound in front of his own net, ran the length of the floor and beat Graham Cousins with a wicked underhand shot that just went by his left ankle. 6 seconds later, Elora's Sean Turner also ran the length of the floor and scored to tie it at 1. Danny Booker did a double fake, spun and sidestepped a defender and beat Matt Somes with a high shot. Somes made a pair of great saves off the sticks of Travis Fowlie and Dustin Janssen in the next 30 seconds. Elora's Sean Turner found the 5 hole and Danny Booker added a power play marker just past the midpoint to give the Mohawks a 4-1 edge. Goalies Graham Cousins and Matt Somes shut the doors for the balance of the frame, Somes getting the larger workload. Sarnia took 3 of 4 minors.

Pollock once again opened the scoring for the second stanza with another of those "patented" submarine shots" of his that forced it's way through the 5 hole. Aaron Doxtator made it 4-3 with a shot from behind his neck as he crossed in front of Cousins, fooling the goalie completely. Pretty goal. Sarnia's Mike Milhalich got the next great opportunity when he ran the floor, faked the goalie who just got a piece of it and the ball dropped to the floor and stopped. A great play, but no payoff. John Foley made it 5-3 after a 10 minute scoreless span. It took another 5 minutes before A Doxtator bulged the twine and then Pollock once more picked up a rebound in his own end, ran the floor and drilled another sub-shot through the 5 hole to knot the contest at 5. Are we seeing a trend here? Elora's Travis Fowlie and Jarret McDougall scored 9 seconds apart to resore a 2 goal lead for the Mohawks, Elora 7-5 after 2 periods. Elora took 4 minors and a major while Sarnia took 3 minors and a major.

Aaron Doxtator did the opening honours for the Pacers in the final frame, closing the gap to 1 just 2 minutes in.Jamie Rooney made it 8-6 when he drilled a shot through the 5 hole that the goalie's equipment slowed down, but couldn't stop. Travis Fowlie put a screened shot through the 5 hole with 11:32 left. Sarnia coaches replaced an overworked Matt Somes with Nick Mroczek at this point. The Sarnia team seemed to slow down after this, EXCEPT, Aaron Doxtator didn't notice and scored a pretty goal with 9:42 remaining, At 7:25 Sheldon Kellestine popped in a shorthander from a scramble in front of the Elora net, At 6:40 Pollock found the range again, at 5:09 Chris Davey fired a rocket under Cousin's left armpit, At 4:24 Pollock notched his 5th goal with an underhand shot that Cousins got a piece of but ricocheted into the corner of the net, at 1:17 Kellestine notched a power play goal that closed out the 6 goal spree that took the Pacers from a 9-6 deficit to a 12-9 lead!!!!! 16 seconds later Jarret McDougall closed the gap to 2 with an extra attacker on the floor, but Dara Emsile restored the 3 goal margin with :39 on the clock and Jamie Rooney closed the gap once more just 4 seconds later. After the ensuing draw ball, possesion was awarded to the Pacers, but the Mohawks still managed to get in a brief flurry that tested Mroczek to his limits and he passed with flying colours. Final score, 13-11 for the jubilant Pacers. Elora took 2 minors, 2 majors and a game misconduct, while Sarnia took 1 minor and a major.

The Pacers worked hard all game and earned the victory. Except for a couple of minor fights, it was a clean game.

Referees Jon Watson and Wayne McDonald called a good game.

Mohawks Double Dutchies 14 - 7

By Ron Pallister
April 14, 2002

ELORA - The Elora Mohawks doubled up on the Owen Sound Dutchmen last night with a 14 - 7 win in front of a crowd of about 125. The Elora squad had only 2 players in the lineup with Jr B experience, while the Dutchmen had 13 returnees in the game.

Both teams had the "first game jitters" in this match. Many of the new players seemed to be trying too hard and were missing the loose balls and passes. Owen Sound netminder Ryan Casemore got several early tests that got him tuned into the game quickly. He was sharp and played very well. Dan Tuck(1 of 2 Elora vets) played well in the Elora net, but didn't get the pressure as Casemore did. Mohawk Rob Marshall opened the scoring at 14:13. Elora's Tom Epoch scored at 5:04 with a pair of Dutchies in the sinbin. Brandon May added another Mohawk marker also with a 2 man advantage and Byron Twiss made it 4 - 0 with a power play goal. With 1:58 on the clock and an extra attacker on a delayed penalty callJamie Wolfe put The Sound on the board and Adam Prettie added another with a floor length run, fake and shot, bringing the visitors within 1. 7 seconds later, Elora'sDavin McDougall Duplicated Prettie's goal with a floor length run and nice shot. Elora leads 5 - 2 after 1 period. Owen Sound took 6 of the 7 minors assessed.

By now, most of the jitters were gone and both squads were working hard on their executionJust a minuta and a half into the second frame, Elora's Jamie Lincoln scored the "prettiest" goal of the night, Tom Epoch and Brett Johnston leading the charge, putting a pinpoint pass to trailerLincoln who made a quick fake and drove it down over Casemore's shoulder.Dave Cutten added 1 before both teams changed goalies near midgame. Owen Sound's Matt Tutin got put to the test quickly and Elora came aweay with a shorthanded marker by Lincoln. Andrew Green found the range for the Dutchmen. Elora potted 3 in 20 seconds, Brett Johnston, Dustin Champagne and Lincoln doing the honors. Mark Bowers setup fellow Dutchman Kevin McGivern at the crease edge, blasting a sub shot at ankle level by Chad Tomlin's right foot, a well executed play. Teammate Brandon Playter finished the period scoring with :18 left. Elora outscored the Dutchmen 6 - 3, making the game score 11 - 5. Owen Sound took 3 of the 4 minors and a misconduct to the goalie.

Both teams appeared to go into a defensive mode for the final stanza, making it almost anti-climactic. Elora got 3 goals from Lincoln, Brandon MacKenzie and Dan Townsend, while McGivern potted the lone Owen Sound marker on the power play with 2:10 on the clock. Elora took 4 of 6 minors. Final score, 14 - 7 for the Mohawks.

It was an entertaining game, but on the technical side, I'm sure both coaches will have words and drills for their players. But, hey, that's what exhibition games are for!

Owen Sound Player of the Game: Ryan Casemore, showed excellant moves and concentration between the pipes.

Elora Player of the Game: Jamie Lincoln, by far the best player on the floor tonight. Another Kasey Beirnes in the making?

Referees Brian Arnold and Jon Watson called a good game despite their cluttering up my "office" with Dutchmen at times! (Just kidding)

Summary

Owen Sound: Matt Tutin 0,1(10); Adam Prettie 1,1; Garrett Bettridge (2); Brandon Playter 1,0(2); Jeff MacDougald 0,1(2); Matt Willis 0,2: Andrew Green 2,1(4); Kevin McGivern 2,1; Eric Hopkins (2); Brady McDonald (2); Jamie Wolfe 1,0; Mark Bowers 0,1(2); Tyler Gibbons 0,1; Ben Kuglin (5); Chris Minard (2); Chris Hoofy (2).
