Devils Take Their Due!!!
Wallaceburg 12 At Elora 11
Happy Birthday Francis Dostie!!
By Ron Pallister August 8, 2001

ELORA - The Wallaceburg Red Devils earned their way to The Founders Trophy Tournament tonight with a 12-11 double overtime victory in front of a packed house, or, more aptly, a packed sauna. There was an air of expecancy, nervousnous abounded, players tried to get a moment alone to "get their minds in game mode". It was a wonderful place to be as this pair of excellent and well matched teams prepared for the contest. 900+ fans were treated to the best lacrosse you can imagine as both teams came out in overdrive and stayed that way throughout the contest. Don Lindsey played great in the Elora net and Josh Mcnaughton was superb between the Devils' pipes. Jeff Soulliere became the hero of the night, taking a pass from Scott Stapleford and popping it home just :54 into the second overtime frame to give the Devils the win.

Thanks to the Devils for bringing their big fan and placing it in "my office". I wouldn't have lasted the game without it.

Mike Weadick opened the Elora scoring, picking up a loose ball off a Travis Fowlie rebound in the slot, arced to his left and beat Josh McNaughton from the crease edge. Jeff Soulliere(Trevor Meyerhoffer, Kevin Dostie) tied it up less than a minute later, and in another minute, Francis Dostie(K Dostie, Meyerhoffer) took a hard, cross-crease pass and one-timed it into the half open net, giving the Devils the lead - for three minutes. Jeremy Machin(Tyler Johnston, John Keating) tied it at 2. Keating, working hard for a loose ball in the center slot, finally got posession, took two strides to his left and fired a cannonball that rocked the net, restoring the lead to the Mohawks. Andrew Earnshaw(Jeremy Sharpe, Drew Davey) once more tied the score with 1:55 on the clock. 3-3 after one. The Devils took their only minor penalty of the game.

Elora once again got on the board first, Keating taking a fast-break pass from Kasey Beirnes and finding the twine at the end of his run. Twenty-one seconds later, Adam Rooney(Steve Boys) found the range to give the home team a two goal edge. Not to be outdone, the Devils got a pair thirteen seconds apart, Bill Taylor(Davey, Sharpe) and Earnshaw(Sharpe) doing the honours, tying it at 5. Less than a minute later, Jamie Rooney found the range on a solo effort ending a spurt of five goals in a 2:59 span. J Rooney(Johnston, A Rooney) increase the mohawk lead to 7-5 just past the midway point after a couple of minutes of sustained pressure. The Devils' Jeremy Sharpe broke up a two-on-one situation, stretching to the limit to pick off a pass and sending the ball back up the floor to his mates. This play, after some extended pressure, ultimately ended with Jason Fox(K Dostie, Taylor) bringing Wallaceburg within one. Chris Sealey(J Rooney) restored the two goal edge two minutes later. With 1:09 left in the period, Wallaceburg 'tender Josh McNaughton made an uncharacteristic error, he got caught 25 feet out of his crease along the back boards, got smoked by a hard, clean check which allowed Danny Booker to pot an "empty-netter", making the score 9-6. The Devils called for measurements on Elora goaltender Don Lindsey's equipment. It all passed, except one elbow pad that was a mere 1/4 inch over the limit, resulting in the Mohawks only minor penalty of the game.

For the third time, the Mohawks scored first, Jarret McDougall(A Rooney, Johnston) doing the deed from in close. We then had almost eight minutes of scoreless play until Wallaceburg's Bill Taylor(Earnshaw, Davey) scored while running away from the net at an angle, twisting at the waist, and firing a bullet past Lindsey. Travis Fowlie notched an unassisted marker for Elora's final tally with a floor length breakaway to make the score 11-7 in favour of the Mohawks with 7:52 left. The Mohawks appeared to go into a defense mode at this point. The Devils went into an offense mode. Taylor(Soulliere, K Dostie) made it 11-8 with 7:31 left. Taylor(K Dostie, F Dostie) got another that Lindsey stopped, dropped the ball which took a weird backward bounce into the net with 3:45 left, score 11-9. F Dostie(K Dostie, Meyerhoffer) closed the gap to one with 2:56 remaining. Scott Blair became the temporary hero of the game, tying the score at 11 with 2:13 on the clock, neither team being able to solve the issue in the balance of the frame. 11-11 after regulation time.

The first overtime was ten minutes of extremely fast paced, intense lacrosse, lots of great shooting, lots of greater stopping by both goalies. Result: Issue still unresolved after four.

By now, even the fans were intense. Everyone was expectent, worried, hopeful and noisy. There was a large, boisterous contingent of Wallaceburg supporters in the stands almost as loud as the larger home-town fans. Wallaceburg won the opening draw, but quickly lost posession. The Mohawks went up the floor and lost the ball in the slot area, Scott Stapleford eventually gaining control, passing to Jeff Soulliere who fired it home from the left slot just :54 into the sudden-death period. Final score, 12-11 for the Red Devils!!

The Mohawks and their fans were sad and disappointed, but congratulated the winners on a hard fought win. The Devils? They appeared to be pleased. Ha Ha! They, of course were deservedly ecstatic, throwing their gloves in the air in celebration, mobbing Josh McNaughton and thouroughly enjoying "their moment". It took a couple of minutes for Josh to make his way up the floor towards the door where he was met by "Mom" with a big teary hug, and "Dad" with a hug, a handshake and a justifiably proud appearance.

Players Of The Game: The first choice for each team was easy, both goalies putting out their best efforts. The "runner" choice was harder. I decided to stray from my usual policy of trying to pick players who played an "above their average" game, instead choosing to honour two players who have now played their final junior games in Ontario and have provided me and all their fans with many hours of fine lacrosse entertainment, and so....

Elora: Donald Lindsey, KASEY BEIRNES. Wallaceburg: Josh McNaughton, KEVIN DOSTIE.

Both teams have several other "graduating" players who have also provided exciting junior careers for us to follow, who I also congratulate and thank, but I think everyone will agree, Kevin and Kasey are the "valedictorians" of this year's graduating class.

Series MVP: There is no "official" MVP award for this series, but I feel strongly the unanimous choice would be Wallaceburg goaltender Josh Mcnaughton. Thanks Josh, for an excellent series.

Referees Bill MacArthur and Jon Watson called their usual good game.

Mohawks Bedevil Devils!! Elora 15, Wallaceburg 8

Friday June 29, 2001

WALLACEBURG - The Elora Mohawks continued their unbeaten string tonight
with a 15 - 8 victory in a very hot Wallaceburg Arena. Wallaceburg was
missing several veterans due to flu and suspensions, but the kevin and
Francis Dostie excelled and thrilled the crowd as usual in their efforts
to keep up with the Mohawks.

It only took twenty seconds for Jamie Rooney to open the Elora scoring
when he took a shot that missed the net, but took a weird bounce off the
boards, hit Wallaceburg goalie Josh McNaughton's back and into the net.
Jordan Bosomworth, Danny Booker and Kasey Beirnes(PP) made it 4 - 1 by
the seven minute mark in what was looking like a rout. Kevin Dostie had
other ideas, scoring at 12:13 and setting up Bill Taylor's first
goal(PP), bringing the Devils within two. Rooney notched his second
goal, followed by the prettiest goal of the night. Elora's John "Special
'K'" Keating made a fast, floor length run, with teammate Tyler Johnston
and one defender at the Devils' crease. Keating passed to Johnston to
McNaughton's left, Johnston put it right back to Keating on the other
side and Keating popped it home before he could get back across the
crease. Jeff Soulliere Made it 6 - 3. Wallaceburg took three of five
minor penalties.

Francis Dostie put on a superb show of penalty killing, eventually
getting forced to the time line and, whille airborn going over the line,
made a blind pass directly to his brother, Kevin, in deep. Kevin got
away a good shot, but Graham Cousins was equal to the task in the Elora
net, turning the shot away. Elora's Steve Boys notched a power play
marker a few seconds later. At the 15:00 minute mark, Francis once more
fed brother Kevin with a floor length pass. Kevin deked the lone
defender out of his socks and scored the Devils' first of three
short-handed goals. Jarrett McDougall made it 9 - 4 with a power play
point, followed by Beirnes to make it 10 - 4. The Devils potted two
short-handers five seconds apart, Taylor fed by(who else) both Dosties,
and Jeremy Sharpe fed by Francis, to end the frame 10 - 6 in favour of
the Mohawks. Elora took two minors and a major, Wallaceburg six minors
and a major.

Now you'd think after playing two gruelling, fast paced periods in the
oppressive heat, these young men would be slowed down some, but nobody
told the players. They kept an awesome pace throughout the final frame.
Elora outscored the Devils 5 - 2, Travis Fowlie, Jamie Rooney, Sean
Turner, KcDougall(PP), and Mike Weadick(PP) doing the honours for Elora
and Bill Taylor with his third of the game, and Jeremy Patterson
responding for Wallaceburg. The Devils took two minors and a major,
Elora one major.

This was an exciting game to watch. Both teams have depth. Both teams
have stars very capable of playing Junior 'A'. Neither team gives up.
I'm looking forward to seeing these teams play again.

Referees Gord Lilley and Jon Watson called a good game.

Elora Mohawks Trample Regals Elora 24, Guelph 2 Show why they have best record in league with 24-2 win By Dave Pollard: Guelph Mercury Wednesday June 20, 2001 ELORA -- You could make a case for the Elora Mohawks being the best Junior "B" lacrosse team in Canada. At least that's the way Guelph Regals coach Bryan Povey sees it. The Mohawks extended their season-long unbeaten streak to 15 games with a 24-2 whitewashing of the under-staffed Regals Wednesday at the Elora and District Community Centre. The Regals are now 3-14-0 on the season while Elora is 14-0-1, the league's best record. "There's a reason they're the top team in Ontario and in my mind, the top team in Ontario is the best in Canada, at least talent wise," Povey said. "I told the guys regardless of the score it was a learning experience. We had no expectations, we wanted to play a good, solid game. "Most of the guys took it to heart getting embarrassed like that. They didn't appear to (back off), that's fine." The Mohawks will in fact have the opportunity to prove they're the best team in Canada later this summer, should they make it to the Ontario final. Originally, due to a scheduling conflict, it appeared the OLA would not send a representative to the national Founder's Cup tournament in Alberta. An agreement has been reached that will see the two Ontario finalists participate in the Founder's Cup. Should one of those teams win the national championship, they would also be declared the Ontario champs. "We look like we're the best team but I'm trying to keep our kids focused," Mohawks coach Doug Hastie said. "We've been successful at doing it so far. I hope it keeps going. "We had a team meeting on Monday night and we asked them, 'If we ever lost a game, how would we react to it?' They're not thinking about losing at all." The Regals certainly weren't going to be the team to knock the Mohawks off their unbeaten pedestal. Guelph entered the game with just one goalie, rookie Justin Ricetto, and 14 runners, including midget call-ups Simon Gordon and Stefan Wallace. Gordon wound up scoring one of the two Guelph goals, a breakaway marker in the second period. Jason Huber had the other goal. "When two AP (affiliated players) outplay your older guys, you're not going to win doing that," said Regals captain Adam Metcalf. "I know I came in here with my head up. I wanted to show people we can play lacrosse but that didn't happen. "Obviously no one expected us to win this game. But when you get out there you try to play your hardest." The Regals simply couldn't defend against the Mohawks' high-flying offence which has averaged 18.5 goals this season. Elora led 10-1 after the first period and 21-2 after 40 minutes. "We came out hard and tried to play a regular game," Mohawks veteran Tyler Johnston said. "We didn't want to embarrass them or anything. There's a lot of not-so-great teams in the league but there are some that can surprise you. "We want to kill every team, that's been our mindset all year." Ricetto didn't exactly stand on his head but he didn't deserve to have 24 shots get past him either. "I felt bad for Justin," Povey said. "I didn't have anyone to relieve him. It's his first year in the league, it's trial by fire. I told him at the end of the first to use this as a learning experience. If you don't learn from your mistakes, you'll never learn." Kasey Beirnes led the Mohawks with three goals and three assists while Jarret McDougall had three goals and one assist. John Foley added two goals and four assists, Mike Weadick had seven assists, Chris Sealey, Travis Fowlie and John Keating each had two goals and three assists, Jordan Bosomworth and Dustin Janssen both had two goals and one assist, Josh Shafer and Jamie Rooney both had one goal and three assists, Adam Rooney had one goal and two assists, Dennis Epoch had one goal and one assist, Johnston had one goal, goalie Donald Lindsey and Jeremy Machin both had two assists and Danny Booker had one assist. Things won't be as easy for the Mohawks in their next two games, tonight against Spartan in St. Catharines and Sunday at home to Six Nations. Spartan is 11-2-0 while Six Nations boasts an 11-3-1 record. The Regals still have a chance to finish third in the Mid West Division with three games left in the season. Just three points out of third, they play winless Brantford and in Orangeville, with a makeup home game against Spartan a possibility. "If it's not necessary, we won't play it," Povey said. "I've talked to Spartan and they feel the same way. The last game of the season (against Orangeville) will probably decide third place."

Mighty Mohawks Whoa Welland Elora 21, Welland 5 Wednesday May 9, 2001 By Ron Pallister ELORA: The Elora Mohawks steamrolled over the fledgling Welland Warlords 21 - 5 tonight in OLA Junior B action. Although the Warlords showed talent and heart, the "youth" of the team showed in their play. Time, experience and coaching will make them better in the near future. Dallas Garlow was the victim in the first period, facing at least 50 Mohawk shots and getting scored on nine times. Garlow played well, not allowing any "soft" goals and stopping several breakaway shots. The most notable of the Elora goals was scored by Mike weadick with an ankle heighth submarine bullet from ten feet in front of the crease. Six nations Red Rebal veteran Travis Hill notched the first Welland marker off a nice feed from Dan General, Justin Hill found the mesh as well. Mohawks lead 9 - 2. Each team took one minor penalty. Jesse Cracknell replaced a shell-shocked Garlow in the visitor's net. He fared getter, allowing only five orbs behind him in the second frame. Elora notched one power play goal by Jarret McDougall. John "Special K" Keating popped in a shorthander, set up by Tyler Johnston after he did some great penalty killing. Adam Rooney also got a short handed goal, sent on a fast-break breakawy by Johnston. John Burkholder got the only marker for the Warlords, a pretty power-play effort one-timed from the edge of the crease on feeds from Justin Hill and Dan General. Elora took three of five minors. Mohawks lead 14 - 3 The Mohawks outscored the Warlords seven to two in the third, McDougall notching Elora's third short-handed effort. We had a good battle with 11:53 on the clock. Welland's 15 year old Pat Giampaolo winning on points over Elora's Tyler Johnston. Each team took two mnors and a major. Final score, Elora 21, Welland 5. It's really hard to write up a "blowout", but I saw lots of positive things tonight. Elora just being Elora. Welland showed a lot of spunk, with only Travis Hill (Red Rebels), Dallas Garlow (Tomahawks) and, I think, Matt Robinson having Junior experience. The rest are mostly young players for this league. They, at times, showed good penalty killing skills, a good power play and excellent basic skills to grow on. Hopefully, these youngsers, with some help from the veterans and coaches, will "keep the faith" and grow together as a unit. Welland Players of the Game: John Burkholder and Dan General. Eora Players of the Game:Adam Rooney and Jamie Rooney. Referees Jon Watson and Terry King did an escellent job. Summary Welland scorers: Jesse Cracknell 0,1; Justin Hill 1,1; Matt Robinson 1,0; Frank Resetarits 0,1; Dan General 0,3; John Burkholder 2,1; Travis Hill 1,0; Arlie Sowden 0,1. Mohawks Win Ugly In Tilt With Onondaga
Elora 11, Onondaga 6 Sunday May 6, 2001 By Matt Harris: Fergus/Elora News Express ELORA -- The game was not the high-scoring, hard-hitting affair some may have expected from Elora and Onondaga. However, the end result was what the home crowd wanted to see. Mike Weadick scored three times, while Kasey Beirnes added a pair of goals and three assists to lead the Mohawks to an 11-6 win over the chippy, and somewhat tired, Onondaga Warriors Sunday afternoon at the Elora Arena. Despite another run-of-the-mill effort from Beirnes, many of the other Mohawks struggled against the mouthy and scrappy Warriors. It was a game as much decided by penalties as it was by skill. Elora took only 18 minutes in penalties, compared to the 34 minutes the visitors logged in the box. And while they didn’t use many of those chances as efficiently as they should have (going three-for-17 on the powerplay), it didn’t come back to haunt them. Donald Lindsay had much to say about that, not allowing a goal to the Warriors after the 9:13 mark of the second period. Fatigue may have been a large factor in the outcome, as Onondaga floored only 13 runners and had made the trip from just outside of Syracuse, New York earlier in the day after playing the Guelph Regals at home Saturday night. Either way, Mohawks Head Coach Doug Hastie said the plan was to run them into the floor and force them into bad penalties. “They played (Saturday night), and we know they start to play chippy when they’re tired,” he said. “The coaches also stressed that we had to cut down on our penalty minutes. In our first two games, we were averaging 25-30 minutes. It was critical that we cut our penalties back, because they have some good shooters on that team. But we played a disciplined game, and it paid off for us.” Once Hastie and the coaches saw the tongues of the Warriors on the floor, Elora was told to force the pace and run them into exhaustion. “We changed our plan a bit when we saw how few runners they had,” Hastie said. “We got a little careless in the second period there, with some guys throwing the ball away. After telling them to shorten up the passes, we got our heads back into it.” In addition to Beirnes and Weadick, Steve Boys (1 goal, 2 assists), Danny Booker (1,1), Sean Turner (1,1) and Chris Sealey (2 assists) had multi-point games. Jarret McDougall (1 goal), Adam Rooney (1 goal), John Keating (1 goal), Josh Shafer, Tyler Johnston and Jordan Bosomworth (1 assist each) rounded out the scoring. The win improved the Mohawks’ season record to 2-0-1, with a pair of games this week. They play host to Welland Wednesday, May 9th, before heading to Brantford Friday night to take on the Posse. Game time both nights is 8 p.m.

Who Let The Dogs Out?
Elora 10 @ Halton Hills 10 OT Sunday April 29, 2001 By Horst Teschke HALTON HILLS -- I had the pleasure of attending this contest at the old barn in Georgetown, and was very entertained by this game. There were 5 lead changes in this contest and the play was, for the most part, physical but clean. Elora took a quick 1-0 lead early , only to have the bulldogs come back with 4 straight to end the first period up 4-1. I am trying to find a word to describe the play by the Mohawks in this frame and maybe it may be the wrong word, but overconfident is the only word that comes to mind. Their passes were soft and a little off , creating turnovers which gave the Bulldogs the chances to create the lead. Although I was not making an official shot count, I would have to say that the Mohawks had the edge in shots in this period. Very good goaltending by Paul Edwards helped the Bulldogs have the 3 goal lead. The second period was for the most part all Elora , with the Mohawks outscoring the Bulldogs 7-2 in this frame. Elora played well and the passes were excellent and their play was what most people have come to expect from the Mohawks for these past few years. Elora came out and in the first 1:12 of the period and had the score tied 4-4. They then went up 5-4 , before the Bulldogs scored two quick ones to take the lead once again. Elora followed with 2 goals to once again take the lead 7-6. The Mohawks scored one late to end the period at 8-6 Elora. Goaltender Edwards for the Bulldogs stood on his head in this period or the Mohawks would have much more than 7. Just as the Mohawks had done in the second period , the Bulldogs quickly tied the score 8-8 early. Elora responded with two quick goals to restore the two goal lead. The Bulldogs did work hard and got 2 to send this game to Overtime. In the overtime, Elora , for the most part controlled the play , had a wide edge in shots , but could not beat goaltender Edwards. I think a second period of overtime , only this one being sudden death would be a good thing for the league to bring in for the future. Tie games can be exciting but , I beleive the fans would much rather see a team winning. One note on this contest. Elora lost only one draw (with 5 minutes left in the 3rd) all game. I heard the pa announce the two players of the game and agreed with only one. Jarrett McDougall for the Mohawks was their pick and I definatly had to agree with that choice. They chose Mike Dube for the Bulldogs , and insomuch as Mike had a great effort for the Dogs, I beleive he was not the main reason Halton Hills acheived the tie in this game. Paul Edwards was in this observers mind , the biggest part of keeping his team close enough to be able to do what they did. Ref's Gardonio and D. Line did a very good job officiating this game. A Goalie's Story By Ron Pallister HALTON HILLS: A couple of years ago I did a game report on an early season game where the Bulldogs got blown away. I made the observation that the "Dawgs" needed help in the goaltending department. The young 'tender sent me an e-mail, very upset, thinking I meant he needed replacing.(an easy error since I neglected to explain in my report). I sent a reply to him stating that I saw good basic skills in his play, but he needed some seasoning and coaching (he was often playing like a hockey goalie). I suggested he go watch the better goalies, ie, Nash, Montour, Vinc, Miller, etc from Jr A, any major goalie, and Jr B 'tenders such as Shafer, Barrett, Soames and Miron. I also suggested he should talk to some of them (they don't bite) and see if he could get some unofficial coaching. I only saw him a couple of more times that season and didn't see him at all last year, but I saw him Sunday night. The difference in this yuoung man's play was astounding. Apparently he did all of the above and then some. My advice to a young goalie now would include watching the same young man as he is now. Of course I'm talking about Paul Edwards, my choice by far as the player of the game for the Bulldogs!!! The Paul Edwards I saw last night is equal to any of the top Jr B goalies I have been privileged to see over the past few years. Congratulations Paul!! Keep up the great work. Mighty Mohawks Maul Mimico!!
Elora 18, Mimico 8 (Exhibition) By Ron Pallister Sunday April 15, 2001

ELORA -- In an exhibition matinee, The Elora Mohawks soudly defeated the young Mimico Mountaineers 18 - 8 this afternoon via an eleven goal second period.

The Mountaineers kept the first period close, both Elora's Don Lindsay and Mimico's Kevin Olmstead made spectacular saves defending their cages.

Jarrett McDougall put the Mohawks on the board just forty seconds in. Mimico's Gerald LeBrun did some great penalty killing with Mike Gooch in the box. McDougall made it 2 - 0. While a man short, Elora's defense had several chances to field the loose ball, but couldn't resulting in Marc Blake putting Mimico on the board. Blake made it 2 - 2 with his second power play marker with 5:16 on the clock. John "Special 'K'" Keating took a pass from McDougall to end the frame with Elora leading 3 - 2. Mimico took four of seven minor penalties.

Elora outscored the Mountain men 11 - 2 in the second frame. Mohawk goalie Don Lindsey took a run up past center and got creamed by a Mimico defender. He came out after the next whistle, Chad Tomlin ably taking his place.Rick Varone notched both Mimico goals, while Danny Booker, Keating, Kasey Beirnes 3, Scott Wilson, Sean Turner, McDougall, Chris Sealey, Jeremy Machin, and Jon Snider scored for the home team. Mimico's midget goalie Joe Valentino took the brunt of this barrage. The young 'tender looked good on scrambles, but came up short with one-on-ones. This youg man showed a lot of determination and skill, with some seasoning and coaching he has the potential to be one of the "good ones". Elora took five of eight minor penalties.

Keating popped in a shorthander just fifty seconds in to get the third period started, then Mimico's Trevor MacKenzie welded the cage shut for nine minutes until Turner found a chink in his armour near the mid-pointKeating and Branden MacKenzie scored less than a minute apart to finish the Mohawk scoring, but the Mountaineers in Blue weren't done yet.

Chad Tomlin had kept the Elora doorstep clean until the 3:42 mark when Clen D'Orazio found the range, followed by Evan Bolotta at 3:18 and Derek Birnie at 3:09. Mike Nicholson finished the Mimico scoring with :37 left on a nice feed from Derek Howe. Mimico took two minors and a major, Elora took one of each.

The more experienced Elora aquad played well, but need to bone up on getting the loose balls, especially in defensive situations.

Mimico shows a ton of promise, lots of skill, speed and size. The coaching is "positive", quietly telling the players what to do, when, where and why. The "team spirit" is positive too. Look for good things from this young team.
