PETER ROST, 81,
PASSES AWAY

VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR SERVED
THROUGHOUT CONFLICT AS
DRUMMER BOY.

Following 10 days illness, Peter
Rost, aged 81 years,
one month and two days, died in the family home,
324 Mark Twain Avenue, at 7:30 o’clock this
morning.
Mr. Rost was born October 28, 1847, in Darmstadt,
state of Hessendarmstadt, Germany, but came to the
United States when eight years of age, and spent the
remainder of his long and useful life
here. Mr. Rost
enlisted in Co. A, 21st
Reg. Missouri Infantry Volunteers
on October 7, 1861, during the Civil War, and served
for
three years, being discharged December 31, 1864, at
Memphis, Tenn. He re-enlisted as veteran
volunteer and
was discharged at the close of the war, in
1866. He
served through the entire conflict as drummer boy.
On June 30, 1869, Mr. Rost was married at Canton,
Mo.,
to Miss Alma Belle Pilcher, and they lived at Canton,
until
1897, when they removed to Hannibal, where they lived
the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Rost passed
away
February 21, 1927. Surviving Mr. Rost are two
daughters,
Mrs. J.B. Smith of St. Louis and Mrs. P.F. Goodwin of
Quincy, Ill.; five sons, William of St. Louis,
Wallace of
Portsmouth Ore., Clarence, Shade, John and Fred Rost,
all of Hannibal; 29 grandchildren and 23
great-grandchildren.
The remains were removed to James O’Donnell
funeral home
and prepared for burial, and will be taken to the
family home
this evening. Funeral arrangements have not
been completed.
