This page is dedicated to the Improv Genius: Ryan Stiles
*********************************************************************************************

Ryan Lee, the youngest of 5, was born in Seattle, Washington on Wednesday, April, 22, 1959, to Sonny (a fisherman by trade) & Irene Stiles. (Sonny passed away in the summer of 2001.) In 1969, his family moved back to Richmond, British Columbia, a suburb of Vancouver. In 1976, at the age of 17, to the dismay of his paraents, Ryan quit school (Richmond Senior Secondary) to perform at local comedy clubs, with fake ID. In 1978, he met his future wife, Pat McDonald, working as a waitress at one of those clubs. They moved in together in 1979 & married in 1989. (They have 3 children: daughter - Mackenzie, born in 1992, son - Sam, born July 3, 1994, & daughter Claire arrived on January 27, 2004.) In 1986, Ryan joined the Second City troup in Tornto. Three years later, in 1989, he joined Second City in LA. In 1990, his big break occured - appearing on the British program, "Whose Line is it Anyway?", which helped lead to guest spots in TV programs & commercials, movies &, eventually, to the role of "Lewis Kiniski" on "The Drew Carey Show" in 1995...still all the while appearing on "Whose Line is it Anyway?" in England. In the early/mid-1990s, Ryan, with Rich Elwood, founded the No Name Players. In 1995, Robin Williams, while in town to film his movie, "Jumanji", guested in one of their performances. In 1998, Ryan got Drew Carey together with the show's executive producer, Dan Patterson, who was in the States trying to pitch the show to the networks. Together they pitched the idea of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" to ABC. The pitch would prove to be successful, becoming first a summer replacement series then joining the ABC prime-time schedule later in the year. 1998 would also be the last year for the original UK series. In 2002, Ryan finally received a long, overdue recognition...an Emmy nomination for his performance on "Whose Line is it Anyway?". In 2004, both shows, "The Drew Carey Show" and "Whose Line...?" were canceled by ABC. Wanting to spend more time with his family, Ryan decided not to take part in the WL game spinoff series, "Drew Carey's Green Screen". He did, however, take part in the pilot episode. Ryan is at home in Custer, outside of Bellingham, in northwestern Washington (state), but he does return to California to take part in various projects. To go along with the 6'6" packaging, Ryan also has a big heart, taking part in various charities, including the TJ Martell Foundation. Add all of that together, along with being a good cook, he's defintely one of a kind. On August 13, 2004, Ryan occasionally performs at the UpFront (improv) theatre in Bellingham with a local improv group. I guess we can now add businessman to that growing list.

What Others Have To Say About Ryan:

"...Among his (Drew's) friends, Ryan Stiles is engaging as a janitor reminiscent of Christopher Lloyd's Reverend Jim on Taxi."
Time Magazine: Television (09/11/95)

"Fans of Carey's sitcom will recognize castmember Ryan Stiles, who is confident, charismatic and quick-witted enough to put Robin Williams to shame. Every scene of his is dazzling, including a hilarious bit as a weatherman regressing through the aging process, and as a rapping camper."
Rick Ellis, Rick on TV (7/23/98)

"..., "Whose Line" is comedy pure & simple: Take a panel of crazy guys, give them the premise for a skit or guessing game, & let them ad-lib. Ryan Stiles (who plays Lewis on "The Drew Carey Show") & Canadian actor Colin Mochrie are the key members of this team. Both are veterans of the British version, & both are amazingly energetic, focused & uninhibited. (One wild sketch in the premiere finds Mochrie tackling the role of an accident-prone circus performer, while Stiles plays a foal being born.)"
People Magazine: Picks & Pans: Tube (8/10/98)

"The highlight of the first show, which aired last week, featured The Drew Carey Show's Ryan Stiles (a co-producer of the American Line and a frequent guest on the British version) doing a peculiar--and hilarious--impersonation of a foal being born. It's a scene that's got to be placed in the You Had to Be There file, but trust me when I say that I haven't laughed that hard at a TV show in months, if not longer"
TeeVee Station Break (08/12/98)

"But the real star of Line is Stiles, who displays a gift for physical shtick not seen in his role as one of the doofy sidekicks on Carey's self-titled ABC sitcom. In a skit that could give Jim Carrey pause, Stiles acts out the aging process backward, regressing from geriatric to sperm in less than a minute."
Bruce Fretts, Entertainment Weekly (8/14/98)

"You can learn to be an improver, but - and learn the rules of it - but the really great ones like Colin and Ryan have something innate."
Drew Carey on "Larry King Live" (8/30/00)
*********************************************
Gotta take some of the bad with the good:

"The show's ("The Drew Carey Show") weakness is a negligible supporting cast, particularly Diedrich Bader and Ryan Stiles, who are all too repulsive as the slobby friends whom Carey likes to throw back a few brewskis after work. The producers are clearly trying to remedy this problem. Since the pilot, they've dragged in a pack of brain-damaged yahoos as neighbors. That hasn't helped, but I hope the salvage work continues because Drew Carey is funny."
People Magazine: Picks & Pans: Tube (10/16/95)
