• SHE'S FIGHTING FOR THE NAME: Remember Beverly Chen Szu-yu who represented Taiwan in last year's Miss Universe, but who caused a commotion when she burst into tears when MUO had ordered her to wear the Miss Chinese Taipei sash instead? Well, Beverly is now active in politics. She has now acquired a new name, "Taiwan's daughter", and she has been elected to be the spokesperson for the Campaign for Rectifying the Name of Taiwan. But she's also in hot water, having been accused by People First Party Chairman James Soong for misrepresenting Soong in her "Special Reports" VCDs. Chen has also written a book about her experiences as a beauty pageant contestant (this, I'd like to read!) (eTaiwan News, Taipei, 3/13/2004)

Speaking of names, I am curious as to how the island nation of Taiwan would be represented in Ecuador. MUO should realize that the name "Chinese Taipei" is absurd. Why is it that Miss Hong Kong is not represented as "Miss Chinese Hong Kong" even though Hong Kong is officially a part of China? The majority of the people in Taiwan do not want a "One China" policy, and it is foolish for MUO to believe that the capitalist system in Taiwan is similar to the communist system in China.
