Dealing With the Loss of a Pet
Unfortunately, we all must deal with the death of an animal companion
at one time or another during our lives. There is no real way that you
can prepare yourself. Our pets age much faster than we do and have a much
shorter lifespan. Losing a pet is not an easy thing but it helps to know
that during the time they were with us, they were happy, well-cared for,
and loved. It is also important that we are there for our pets when they
need our compassion the most.
-
Toward the end of a pet's life, there are usually subtle changes that occur
when their time is coming to an end. These things can take place gradually
or suddenly, depending on the type of injury or health problem that a pet
encounters.
-
Euthanasia is always a difficult decision that you and your veterinarian
should make together. When the time comes, get a friend to come along so
that you do not have to drive yourself home. Losing an animal friend is
an emotional experience and you should not be ashamed or embarrassed to
show your grief.
-
Being there with your pet, holding them, and talking to them during the
procedure is difficult at best. But helping your companion through this
experience is one of the most selfless things that you could ever do. Let
them know that it is okay to go and tell them how much you love them. Think
of how you would feel if the roles were reversed. They would be there for
you, too.
-
After the death of your beloved friend, you can bury the remains in a place
where they used to enjoy spending time or somewhere beautiful and serene.
Cremation is another option, where the remains can be placed in an urn
and kept inside in a place of honor. Everyone has some kind of special
custom or ritual that they prefer, so do whatever it is that gives you
the most comfort.
-
Take some time for yourself to grieve. Everyone grieves in their own way
and at their own pace. Think of the special times that you had together,
how important they were to you, and how much love they gave you. Look at
pictures and remember the good times along with their special little quirks
and habits. You just might find yourself smiling through the tears at how
lucky you were to have them for the time that you did. Life is about quality,
not quantity.
-
Don't let other people rush you into getting another pet. You can never
replace one pet with another. They are all so special in their own way.
When the time comes that you feel you're ready to open your heart to another
pet,
you'll know it.
