EXTRACT FROM MWGM LETTER
FREEMASONS LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION
VILLAGE
In mid 2000 we entered into a
partnership with the Leukaemia Foundation to fund the building of a village in
Townsville to accommodate patients and their families while undergoing lengthy
chemotherapy treatment for leukaemia. This partnership proved to be a great
success, with over $1.5 million being raised.
With the assistance of the Foundation, we were able to obtain
considerable media publicity, consisting of in excess of 300 newspaper articles
throughout the state, together with radio and television coverage of major
events. This publicity has assisted in
making the Craft and its activities much more visible to the public.
The Leukaemia Foundation now have
an urgent need for additional accommodation in Brisbane for country patients,
and have requested our assistance in the establishment of residential
facilities for 15-20 families. The
Foundation has asked us to consider a proposal to raise $1.5 million over a
four-year period for a Freemasons Leukaemia Foundation Village, commencing next
January. The $300,000 of excess funds from the last project will form the base
for this undertaking. The Foundation
staff will again provide active support.
Freemasons throughout the state
who were involved in the previous campaign have expressed to me their strong
feelings in favour of continuing the partnership, as it is felt that the
additional time will further enhance the positive perception of Freemasonry in
the wider community. I now seek the
support of your Lodge for this continued partnership.
I request your Wor Master to put
the question on the attached sheet to your members present at your June/July
meeting, record the results on that sheet, and return it to the Grand Secretary
immediately after the meeting, so as to reach the office not later than 1st
August. Your cooperation and support will be appreciated.
