Mahatma Gandhi College,Iritty,founded by Iritty Educational Society
and affiliated to Kannur University,is the realisation of a long cherished dream of the
hard working and enterprising people of the region.As there was no institution for higher studies
near the locality,enterprising people with a vision formed Iritty Educational Society in 1981
and sought the permission of the Calicut University and Kerala Government to start a new aided
College.The Society purchased around 17 acres of land at Keezhur Kunnu, 4Km away from Iritty, in
between Mattanur and Iritty near the Thalassery-Mysore State Highway, as the permanent site for the proposed College.The site is noted for its
scenic beauty ,easy accessibility and calm atmosphere so needed for scholarly pursuits.The
tranquil atmosphere that envelope the region makes it an ideal spot for the scholarly aspirants.
The persistent and dedicated efforts of the society succeeded when the Calicut University and the Kerala Government accorded sanction for a first grade College in 1995.
Accordingly,foundation stone for a building complex was laid by Sri.E.T.Muhammed Basheer,
Honourable Minister for Education,Kerala on 13th May 1995.
The college started functioning on 13th July 1995 in a semi permanent building.The founder principal was Prof.M.P.Lakshmanan and the College offered three degree courses,viz.,B.Sc. Physics, B.Sc. Maths and B. Com. Iritty Educational Society under the able and inspiring leadership of its President Sri.K.P.Noorudheen, Ex.Minister,mobilized resources in a dynamic campaign by increasing the members of the Society and succeeded in meeting the expenses of constructing a three-storied concrete building for the college.The new college building was formally inagurated by Sri.P.J.Joseph,Honourable Minister for Education,Kerala on 13th October 1997. Initially the college was affiliated to Calicut University.At present the college is affiliated to Kannur University.Under the enthusiastic/dynamic leadership of the founder Principal, Prof.M.P.Lakshmanan,the College gained permanent affiliation for the Degree courses during the academic year 1999-2000.In recognitiion of its academic performance, the Kannur University and the Kerala Government accorded sanction for B.Sc,Computer Science during the academic year 1999-2000. Kannur University has now(2001) sanctioned another new Degree course, B.Sc.Enivornmental Chemistry, to the college. The founder Principal, Prof.M.P.Lakshmanan retired from service on 31st March 2000 and Prof. M.A.H.Khan assumed charge as Principal on 31st May 2000.
