Consider   875 + 783

 

875 = 800 + 70 + 5

783 = 700 + 80 + 3

 

875 + 783 = 800 + 70 + 5 + 700 + 80  + 3

 

875 + 783 = 800 + 700 + 70 + 80 + 5 + 3

Break apart the number into its composite pieces.

 

Add the like pieces together.

 

Add the given results together.

 

You should get the same result as if you had added using the methods you used in grade school.

 

This example shows how we can alter the order of addition ( commutative property ) and the groupings ( associative property ) used to carry out addition.
