Tery Daly chats with Thomas Irvin in an attempt to discover how long
perfection takes.
Q: You've started doing a few shows around town lately, and I
know you've been at Presto studios recently adding the finishing touches on
some tracks that you've been working on for the past 27 years. When can we
expect
to see a Thomas Irvin release ?
A:
I haven't been putting the finishing touches on them, I've been putting the basic tracks on them. Jonathan Hischke just came in to play bass
last weekend, and most (if not all) of the acoustic guitar tracks are done. Next comes electric guitar, strings, and keyboards, as well as a
probable new track that will require a full band. So I don't know when you can expect a release, but I am close on one song, "A Crush", and I
think I may try to finish that completely and get it some airplay or inclusion on a comp or some such thing.
Q: Do you already have a name for your album whenever it
comes out?
A: Yeah, it will be called "Unrequited Love Songs." Nearly every song is
about a love that isn't happening, isn't happening anymore, or hasn't happened yet.
Q: Do you have any plans for putting a band together and
touring to support the release when it occurs?
A: Intentions, yes; plans, no. The problem is nearly every musician
who plays on it now lives somewhere other than Lincoln: Ben Armstrong, Colby
Starck, & Jonathan Hischke are in Chicago, Shane Aspegren is in Paris,
Amoree Lovell is in Portland, and Harry Dingman is somewhere in Colorado. So I don't know who will be in town when it gets done.
Q: Been working on any new material lately?
A:
Yeah, that new song I mentioned--it's capo'ed on four
strings (not six) and it's in double-dropped-D tuning, so it's kind of weird. I've been
playing it for a few months now, and I'm trying to figure out what the words are.
Q: Does it sound like The Church?
A: No. Would you like it to? |
