What's New with?

By Tery Daly

Q:  What was behind the decision to have Jon join the band?
A:  We've wanted to add another person for some time now, it was just a matter of finding the right person. Jon was working on a bass for Mike and the subject came up. Jon really wanted to do it, I gave him some recordings we'd been working on and got together to see what would happen. We were all extremely pleased with the results.

Q:  Will this change the songwriting process? Will Jon contribute songs, co-writing, or will Jon just be a guitar player and keep is big ideas to himself?
A:  I welcome all big ideas to the song writing table, from all the guys, Jon included. For instance, there's one new song that Mike, Trout and I had been kicking around for a while, but it just wasn't working as well as we thought it should. So I showed Jon all the different parts, and he kind or re-arranged some things, added a part, etc, and I think it's going to
be a good one. Of course, that's what I say about all the songs and sometimes I'm horribly wrong.

Q:  Does Mike Keeling like eggs as much as the talk around town would have one believe? Are eggs integral to the Drive-by sound?
A:  Eggs have nothing to do with the Drive-by sound. I'm not sure if Mike likes eggs as much as he says, but he sure talks about them a lot. As a matter of fact, we all do. I think we're going to start having band breakfasts together a few times a week so I'll get back to you and let you know if Mike likes scrambled or fried.

Q:  Is this your first time as a two-guitar lineup in dbh?
     A:  Yes, it is.

Q:  Is this just one step in your plan to be the new N'Sync?
A:  Who? Is that a Guided by Voices side project or something?

Q:  What's next for DBH? upcoming recordings?
A:  We're going to be playing out of town as much as possible: Kansas City, Lawrence, various places in Iowa. Yes, we're going to be doing some recordings. We'd like to do a 7" and a full length CD sometime this year, but we are in no hurry to release anything right now.

Q:  You seem to be laying off live shows for a while. Is this so you have a chance to "gel" with your new member, or has your crack habit spiraled out of control?
A:  Actually, it seems like we've been playing quite a bit. If for some reason the out of town shows don't pan out, we might play Lincoln more, but I think we'll be OK. We really enjoy playing live, so I don't know how long we can go without doing so. After the Mike Watt show (May 31st), I don't think we'll be playing the capital city until fall. Soon people will forget about us and then we will return. Of course, if good local shows are offered to us in the meantime
(such as Mike Watt) I don't think we'd say no. As far as "gelling", we've already done that. And the crack habit spiraled out of control years ago.

Q:  Finally, do you ever plan to play any shows when I'm in the state?
A:  Hopefully, we will hook up with you on the road. Quit being sucha baby.

Love and punches,
Dan
