Crush The Clown and Bobby Conn

By Melissa Stemme

March 18  |   Duffy's Tavern  |  Lincoln

To summarize the Duffy's show on March 18th two phrases spring to mind:  rousing rock, and discounted green beer.  If you missed the show then let it be known that Crush the Clown pulled out yet another good performance.  They were the slated opening act for headliner Bobby Conn. Being a opening act is something of a misnomer, despite "opening" for another act one still has to stand apart. But not too apart.  The point is keeping the crowd stimulated for the next act. Crush the Clown has proven to be a consistent band, and did their part well.  They played a good lead up to Mr. Bobby Conn.

What can one say of the cultural phenomena that is Bobby Conn?   God bless him in his skin-tight apricotpants swaying in time with the music, and padding around onstage in those dangerous platform boots. Conn, who is stationed in Chicago, lived up to all of the hype that he has garnished such as: "I've only ever heard one Bobby Conn song once. But I know he ain't a threat to god...he IS god! The world needs Bobby Conn!"  Comments like these are posted on message boards across the web, usually in response to Conn's onstage antics, such as dressing up as a priest, or handing out twenty-dollar bills during a show.

Gimmicks like these help catch people's attention but one can't rely on them solely as entertainment.  So here's the other part of the Bobby Conn package: he's a talented performer.  Called by some "the bravest little man" he performs material that may give him praise just as quickly as criticism.  Conn's tunes were backed with Monica Bou Bou on violin, Jonathon Joe on bass, and Colby Starck on drums.  They played a good show (this being the part where the phrase "rousing rock" is yet again handy).   Listening to Mr. Conn is like stepping into a time machine and hearing glitterrock all over again.

While all of Conn's fellow band mates deserve accolades for a job well done, Monica Bou Bou particularly stood out. Her ability to back Conn's vocals and compliment him onstage added another dynamic to the performance.  The melodies that she played ranged from timeless classical to dissonant sounds. This accompaniment added just the right touches to the Bobby Conn sound, which could be best characterized as psychedelic rock.  The evening's entertainment was altogether good and worked well together.  One would be hard pressed to name another local band that would work well as an opening act for Bobby Conn, the choice of Crush the Clown was perfect.  And thanks to whatever twist of fate is responsible for all that green beer leftover from St. Patrick's Day.  It's much appreciated.
