The 4th of July: 13 County,
The Black Dahlias, The Holy Ghost

    Independence
Day brought us a blow-out show at Duffy's Tavern featuring 13 County, The Black Dahlias, & Nebraska to New York transplant The Holy Ghost. It was a night of fine American music, & the perfect way to celebrate & say "Fuck the British!".
13 County never fails, & this night their opening slot got the crowd all riled up for the rest of the show with their brand of all-American country rock. 13 County have just released their first album (titled 13 County, recorded by Pat of the W.T.), which captures their live performances very well. The boys played songs from the disc & one new song that they debuted at their CD release show last month.
The Black Dahlias were on fire! Of course after witnessing their practice the day before I wondered once again why they even need to practice. Ben pounded the drums so hard at practice he broke part of my floor tom. Wed. he did the same, playing in a flurry, but with much less damage done. Charles really let loose also. He leapt from the stage something like 4 times, nearly knocking people over, possibly landing on his head during one leap, and losing his glasses somewhere on the stage. He complained about a "blown-out knee" on the message board, so I'm guessing that damage was done this night. Man is that devotion, though. I almost hope The Dahlias stay separated by distance (Randy lives in Chicago - the first to make the bands planned move to The Windy City - with Ben to follow next) and play sparingly so they can put this much energy into each performance.
Other highlights included; Tery Daly (Creatures of Habit) joining "Punk Rock Hall of Fame" (which features a reference to The Holy Ghost along with many other local & national bands) for extra vocal duties; Randy's wily smile as he added some extra notes to the intro of "Emperor Daniel"; "How Fast He'd Go" (a fairly new song) sounding more flushed out & Charles getting closer to finding his voice on the song; The Dahlias launching into "Crawlin' King Snake" by John Lee Hooker (recently deceased) during "Harpoon the Backslider"; and the performance of a lost song from The Lonesome Death of Bre'er Rabbit recording sessions (lo-fi recordings of what was then suppose to be The Dahlias second album. Some of the songs have made their way onto "What I Do At Midnight" which they are recording with Patrock). This show was intense and amazing, and I hope, some indication of what we'll see early next month during the purported finally "Final Shows" (in Lincoln).
I was afraid The Holy Ghost wouldn't hold up after The Dahlias, but they rocked the house. I'd never seen them live (they were around in the scene during my drop-out phase), but they more than lived up to their recordings. New drummer Nick (who replaced Nebraskan Matt Focht - a Chicago transplant now. You may have seen him drumming for Bright Eyes recently) was worried earlier in the day (The Ghost, along with many other bands & celebrities shared some 4th of July celebrations) that he wouldn't remember the songs, but all was well. The Ghost even played a new song that seemed to go off without a hitch. Some local boys, including Eric Aspengren & Mr. Lieurance leapt on stage to sing along to "The Holy Ghost".
For those that don't know: The Holy Ghost formed from the ashes of Opium Taylor around 1998 or so. Opium Taylor featured Chris  Heine (also Matt Silcock in it's later incarnation), and was one of the bands that defined the Lincoln sound in the early 90's. (As did Urethra Franklin before Opium Taylor.) The Holy Ghost was origionally inhabited by Chris & Kent Heine, Matt Focht (opium Taylor), & Rich Higgins (Eric the Red, Sideshow). The band relocated to NY, Rich came back to Lincoln, & Focht split for Chicago, leading to the currnet incarnation with  Alec Ferrell on guitar & Nick Decarmine on drums. Holy Ghost have released an album, or a demo as they call it, though their website claims you can place an order for their debut single. I'd check out their website for info., and Jeff Randall's Lincolnzine review for a more poetic take on the band.

Happy Fourth of July!
