September 15, 2000 HiFi-90 at the Royal Grove Well my first assignment
went pretty good. I met with the guys in HiFi-90 just before their power driven show and
was very comfortable in their presence, and it was at that they took the time for this
interview. With their new release "...nine shy of a day" with the current
line-up of Gregg Witforth (guitar/lead vocals), Rod Witforth (bass/vocals), Bill (NEW lead
guitar), and Josh Salestrom (drums), they pounded out an excellent show with a driven
energy flowing from Gregg. The albums graphics as well as the copies of the CD were all
done by Gregg. Their website (www.hifi90.com) has more of the same.
JJ Boom: So what was the biggest challenge as far as recording your first album? Gregg: Well, we recorded in a town just outside of Kansas City in this guys' basement studio called Rock-O-Plane studios. It took 15 hours to record, but it was free. JJ Boom: So no hand sandwich Cinderella stories huh? You all have steady jobs then? Gregg: I handle 911 calls Josh: I work in a meat department Rod: I work in computer support. Bill: I uhh just joined the band 3 months ago and hope it leads to a wonderful career. JJ Boom: so about the recording studio? Rod: Yeah, he had this digital 8-track to record with and it was set up very high-tech. Josh: I recorded in a separate room from the rest of the band. JJ Boom: So was recording in a separate room harder? Josh: Well I can hear my mistakes on the CD and the sound was kinda laid back compared to normal. JJ Boom: I couldn't tell. I have to tell you guys I have only heard your songs that were posted on the internet, "I, Deep Inside, and "Gone to Nowhere" (which is my favorite) So what for you so far would make you feel that you really made it in the music business or what has made you? Bill: Well for me the first time was when I got this (shows me a folded dollar bill) its from my first paying show and I keep it with me as a keepsake, that was a first for me. JJ Boom: So has anyone thrown any underwear at you guys yet? Gregg: Not so far but we're waiting, Josh, Rod and I are married. JJ Boom: So Bill is the single guy that gets all the girls for the band (laughter)! Your CD has some interesting pictures what is the story behind them as well as your bands name? Gregg: The pictures were from a hypnosis book, and the name was in the book as well but it was HP-90 and then Josh brought up the fact that it was closer to a HIFI-90 tape cassette! JJ Boom: I can't wait to see what people try to figure the name out as. So who or what band has been most influential on your music? Band: RADIOHEAD!!!!! Gregg: We would love to tour with them sometime! JJ Boom: So you hope to go on a national tour and get all over the states then? Gregg: Hope is good we all hope! Well there you have it! There was a lot more to the conversation but a gallon of beer slowed my thought process in getting all of this down after the show. Here's to more of the same shows! Hifi-90 overall did a very excellent show and I hope to see them again.. ----- JJ BOOM
