Her Flyaway Manner / Cursive
@ Duffy's Wednesday February 23, 2000
By  Joe Krings

"I like Cursive better with Ted," was overheard in between bands during this sparsely attended event. The person was referring to Cursive's new line-up which now features Ted Stevens, the poet/guitar from Lullaby For the Working Class. Rumored to be feeling either bored or constricted by Lullaby' soft style Stevens has plugged in his amp, turned it up to 11 and started screaming side by side with Tim Kasher. Whether it's for the better or not is not mine to say. I did enjoy watching Cursive and their start-stop, chug-chink brand of rock, but they've never had as distinct, daring or essential a sound as Lullaby For The Working Class and likely never will.

Her Flyaway Manner played second and the crowd got even sparser. The lack of people seemed to have no effect on the performance. Whether you like Her Flyaway Manner or not they have a certain urgency in their songs which is undeniable. Whereas Cursive will flail around a song structure with guitars going endlessly nowhere Brendan McGinn's more restricted but driving guitar gives the feeling that he's chasing after some lofty goal that is invariably two steps ahead. They attempted to hawk some seven-inches too, so if you missed the show go out and find one and try to recreate the moment at home. Just spotlight the turntable, pour yourself a pitcher of beer, close your eyes and bob your head.

"I know nothing about music, but I know what I like."
