BRIGHT EYES, TV CITY, TARA JANE O'NEIL, & KEVIN CHASEK

LIVE AT DUFFY'S TAVERN, APRIL 16, 2000

Words & Photos By  Michael French

Kevin Chasek started the night off with an intimate acoustic set full of emotion & longing . Striped of the clamor of a full band, alone with his guitar, Kevin has become a mature singer/songwriter.

National act Tara Jane O'Neil followed, in much the same vein. Sometimes alone. sometimes accompanied by drums, cello, eerie sampler sounds, and even flute. Beautifuly mellow, very moving.

Local experimentors, TV City played their debut performance next. With the stage barely lit & two tvs up front, I almost forgot humans were actually playing. The music was estatic & rockin, some very dancable. Harmonious guitar feedback and sampled voices carried one song into the next. A 4-track, run by the ever honorable Joe Krings, was used to supply the sampled noises and vocals (I know Ayn Rand was sampled among others... ).  The crowd sat hypnotised by the screens, while images from avant garde films were displayed, and the sillouettes of the band moved in the background. During one song we were even treated to videos of Matt & Shane listening to a relaxation tape through headphones. I'm sure TV City will continue to mutate this amazing live experience, so check them out again soon!

Bright Eyes ended the night with Conner's passionate tunes of heartbreak. Heavy because of his voice & lyrics, despite the use of instruments more traditionaly associated with pop or folk. A melodic & frantic set, Conner sat playing guitar and keyboard until the last song, when he sprang from his seat (as if unable to contain his demons any longer) to spasticly thrash at his guitar. So simple yet complex Bright Eyes is hard to explain to the uninitiated (if you are one of these... ). They definately should be seen at least once (although once won't be enough!) Bright Eyes has a new album coming out soon, so look for that and more live shows !
