THE BLACK DAHLIAS CD RELEASE PARTY
W/ THE LEPERS & NICK HARRAL

LIVE AT KNICKERBOCKER'S, APRIL 12, 2000

By  Michael French

The Black Dahlias headlined this shindig to celebrate the release of their new CD "Calaca City" {Daddy's Circus Records}. Nick Harral opened up with some tender acoustic tunes, that inspired a couple to slow dance. Very quiet & romantic stuff.

The Lepers plowed through their very heavy tunes next. With a mic. strapped to his chest Owen, belted out the angsty lyrics while drummer Ken and new bassist Steve Streit laid down some rocking grooves. Steve joined the band only a few months ago, but seems to add a welcome dynamic to the band while bouncing around & pushing his bass against his amp. Toward the end of the set I recongnized a song from the old days, about a fraternity rape, and later I was informed that indeed The Lepers were once a band called Gregory. It was good to be reminded of that long lost era. It is definately a good thing that The Lepers offer us something loud, and angsty to listen to.

Of course, the kings of the night were The Black Dahlias who thrilled us all with their brand of gothic country. For the first part of the ritual new bassist Brian plucked his upright as drummer Ben played some guitar & the multi-talented Kristen raised Hell on the drums. Charles was in fine form, like whiskey, getting looser & more mighty as the set progressed. Randy & Mark played as if they were racing against the devil to save the souls of all present. Indeed it felt as spindly red fingers were pulling at my legs & brain! Sometimes, pulling me to dance, other times dragging me down to some Faustian liar.   Especially when Kristen slid a bow across a saw, making an eerie haunting sound. Mixed with the violin, those fingers felt like spirits rising from the grave. The night ended with "Hound Dog Rain" a stomping romp that brought Kristens bar skills into play. With protective eyegear strapped on, she smashed beer bottles into a plastic trashcan. Charles stood dangled from the mic stand & the band played furiously, finally burning away any evil spirits that lingered.
