In May of 1997, Steve filmed an independent movie called "Safe Men". In it he and Sam Rockwell play two struggling singer-songwriters mistaken for top safecrackers in Providence, R.I., where they become entangled with the Jewish Mafia. The film was shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in January 1998. "Safe Men" has been picked up by October Films and will be out on August 7. Release may be limited.
I'm sure we've all been hearing a lot about Tom Hanks' HBO series, "From The Earth To The Moon", which began airing on April 5th. Steve appeared in the very first episode, playing astronaut 'Elliott See', who dies in a plane crash before he can make his first space trip.
Steve has just signed on to yet another film! He'll be joining Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Parker Posey, and Greg Kinnear in "You've Got Mail" (note name change). The film is an updated version of Ernst Lubitsch's 1938 classic comedy "The Shop Around The Corner". In it, a woman (Ryan) falls in love with a man (Hanks) over the internet at night. What makes this story interesting? The two characters actually already know, and despise, each other by day! Steve plays an employee in Ryan's bookstore. Filming began on February 25 in New York, and is due in theatres on December 18.
It seems that my fellow Canuck Dave Thomas ("Grace Under Fire") has started up his own production company. One of the first projects up is "Running With Scissors", starring Steve Zahn, Tom Everett Scott, and Giovanni Ribisi (all of "that thing you do!"), as well as Steve's wife, Robyn Peterman. The film went into production in January and is scheduled for release late this fall.
It would seem that I missed an important little bit of info. "Liberty! The American Revolution" aired on PBS in late November. Steve played an American Sergeant in the six-part series documenting the Revolution. A small part, yes, but it's still a part! Word is, the mini-series will be repeated on PBS, so watch your local listings.
According to my favorite reliable source, "Syracuse Muse" has undergone a title change. The film is now called "Freak Talks About Sex". Still no word on distribution.
I'm still on a desperate search for a copy of Steve on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show"! The appearance aired in October of 1996. Should you know the whereabouts of this coveted item, PLEASE let me know!!
Anyone wanting to see "subUrbia" can rent it now! Yes, "subUrbia" is now available on video, and I definitely recommend it to those of you who have yet to see it.
I would like to say thanks to those who responded to my inquiry about "Rain Without Thunder". I now possess a copy, and must say that it is a very moving story. If you are ever in the mood for a thought-provoking film, go out and grab a copy of this video. Take warning, though. It is about abortion and is controversial. But, especially for females, I feel that films such as this are educational. (don't worry, it's not graphic in any way at all--purely a story being told)
Well, we FINALLY got to see "Subway Stories"!! I must say, it was worth the wait! The whole movie was actually very interesting and very well produced. But, I was partial to the story in which Steve appeared! I've already heard from a few of you who caught the movie, and everyone seems to have loved it! "Subway Stories" is now available on video in some video stores.
