March  Aboard
The Mattison Cruiser

March 1-6 - We are now at Preferred Campground in Pahrump and have enjoyed many day trips in the area. We spent two days touring Death Valley. What a surprise! We never expected it to be so beautiful! We were amazed with the scenery, rock formations, and colors. We visited "Scotty's Castle", an amazing story behind it, beautiful colored rocks at "Artist Palette",  and Daryl even got out the 'ol golf clubs at "Devils Golf Course". (Don't miss the pictures of Daryl swinging!) After so much culture & history, we spent the day in Las Vegas enjoying the sites of the Casinos. MJ really wanted to "hit it big", but no such luck! It's a good thing Daryl kept a tight watch on her and money, or she just might still be there trying "just one more"! We walked "the strip" and visited some of the famous Casinos that we had heard about. It was an enjoyable time for all except our feet! Wish we knew how many calories we burned off that day!

March 7 - Left Pahrump and headed back to Phoenix to visit with Eddie, Ann & Eddie. En route, we passed Hoover Dam, where there was a security checkpoint. Not sure they would have found anything with the search they did, but at least they were checking vehicles. Hoover Dam certainly was impressive! We drove right on top of it!!

March 8-11 - A very nice visit with Eddie, Ann & Eddie. Gosh, they certainly had us laughing our heads off! That Eddie Jr. is a natural comedian! And Eddie Sr. can tell some pretty good jokes and stories. We enjoyed hearing family stories from the past. Daryl was in his glory at TGI Fridays which overlooked Bank One Stadium, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks!

March 12-13 - Stayed at the A-OK RV Park in Holbrook, Arizona. Enjoyed taking in a small section of Rte. 66 & its Nostalgia! Sure did bring back a lot of memories! Remember "Standing On The Corner" by the Eagles? Well, we found that corner! Also spent some time touring the Petrified Forest and Navajo Country. Petrified Forest was very interesting and our tour guide was great! We even discovered how to detect whether a rock is really a rock or perhaps a bone! Amazing! We were disappointed in the section of Navajo Country that we toured. It wasn't at all what we expected. We hope there are better areas that show the history and pride of this Native American Tribe. We did visit the oldest active "Trading Post" at Ganado called the Hubbell Trading Post. Native American women came to get their supplies while we were there. We also got to see one of the oldest settlements in the US, at Canyon de Chelly (d'shay). An ANASAZI pueblo is located there in what was once a very fertile valley. We saw "The White House" which is nestled under a huge cave which had been cut into the wall by the rivers of time. Part of the pueblo outside the cave is still standing as well. Very interesting!

March 14 - 17 -Traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico & enjoyed a wonderful visit with Daryl's cousin Reggie in Albuquerque. We met Rachael & Debbie and enjoyed a leisure buffet with lots of catching up for Daryl & Reggie! While we were in this area, we took a wonderful ride touring "The Turquoise Trail", visited a neat old Mining Town, spent an enjoyable day touring Santa Fe and visited several missions & churches in the area. The Loretto Chapel, the legendary "miraculous staircase" is as beautiful as it is mysterious. We also enjoyed a leisure walk thru the shops etc. in Santa Fe... The Art & Architecture were beautiful! Our campground was located on Rte 66 just outside of Albuquerque. Monday morning when we woke up, we were surprised with snow covered vehicles! Daryl said, "let's get outta here before we get snowed in"! We left the snow covered mountain area of Albuquerque and headed for Oklahoma City. The weather was fine as soon as we were out of the mountains!

March 18-21 - We picked up sections of Rte 66 & "got our kicks on Route 66" with an enjoyable "walk down memory lane" in Elk City at the Rte. 66 National Museum and "Old Town Museum Complex" at the Museum. It certainly was a lot of fun reminiscing and visiting this fantastic place! We also spent quite a bit of time at the Memorial in Oklahoma City. What a beautiful tribute to that horrible day! MJ had a hard time dealing with most of the Memorial, because of the sad state of our country these days, but nonetheless, she enjoyed it. Of course, she did think that maybe she had lost Daryl because she waited & waited & waited for him to catch up with her...(he tends to read almost every word on everything!) Then we headed off to something a little on the lighter side, The Cowboy Hall of Fame. Again, Daryl was in his glory of reliving the good 'ol Cowboy & Indian days! We ended up spending the night as guests of Flying J! It's amazing how many campers you see in the parking lot when you wake up in the morning!

March 22-25 - We traveled to the Memphis, Tenn. area where we enjoyed just a few of the many sites there. Daryl "got lost" again in the Rock & Soul Museum! It was an audio tour with several juke boxes with good 'ol day music and he got wrapped in "jiving to the tunes"!!! We took a ride by Graceland and visited some of the shops there. We really enjoyed our time at the St. Jude's Children Hospital Complex with the Danny Thomas Memorial. It is a beautiful tribute to both Danny Thomas and the patients of St. Jude's!! Later that day, MJ had the opportunity to meet another member of her Garden of Friendship Group, "Aunt Nancy", who lives just outside of Memphis. We had a great time chatting with her and after a short time, we felt like old friends chatting in her living room. She and Daryl had much in common as she too was a teacher for many years. She is a lovely, caring lady, who is coping with some major health issues, but is determined that it will not get the best of her!! She has Rheumatoid Arthritis & MS and doesn't get out very often. We will most definitely visit her again on our way thru Tennessee! She is a remarkable lady!

March 25 - We spent most of the day traveling from Memphis to Ft. Payne, Tenn. Ft. Payne is the home of Randy Owens from the group "Alabama". We visited & enjoyed the "Alabama" Fan Club & Museum. Tons of memorabilia!!! We hope to have the opportunity to see their "Final Tour" coming up this year.

This was also another Garden of Friendship day for MJ. Two members from the Garden responded to her e-mail message and she was fortunate to meet one of them while we were in Ft. Payne! Renea & her adorable 18 month old son, Curtis! We had a very nice time chatting with Renea at the local Cracker Barrel and finally, before we left, Curtis actually "warmed up" to us just a little! Prior to arriving in Ft. Payne, we thought for sure we were going to meet another member of the Garden, but unfortunately, she didn't give MJ very much info as to how to get in touch with her. We only knew that she worked at a Truck Stop in Cullen. After enjoying some lunch and getting the help of our very nice server, Jean, we decided it was getting late in the day if we wanted to continue our plan for the day. So, MJ wasn't able to meet "Breezy" from Cullen, Tenn. Maybe another time!!

March 26 - We traveled to Montgomery, Alabama and enjoyed a leisure ride on the Trolley which hi-lighted many major spots in Montgomery...Union Station, The Capitol Building, Civil Rights Museum, & "Old Alabama". What a surprise when it dawned on MJ that the Capitol Building here in Montgomery was the first Capitol Building she has had the opportunity to visit! The day was filled with history and enjoyment! The tour guide for the Trolley, Chris, was absolutely fantastic!! There's one guy that really loves his job! He did a wonderful job giving us this very informative tour!

The Gunter Lake Corp of Engineers Campground outside of Montgomery provided us with a quiet place to stay for the night. Unfortunately, when we registered, we learned that it has been raining in this area for almost the past month! Maybe the rain will stop long enough for us to explore the beautiful nature  surroundings here! Well, we decided to move on...Whew!! Did we ever "move"! Daryl got behind the wheel today and away we went all the way from Montgomery to Florida!!! Whew!! Talk about "sore buns"!! But we are here and staying put for hopefully a full week!!! Yahoo!!!! Looking forward to staying put for a little while. We are in Live Oak, Florida at Spirit of The Suwannee Music Park & Campground. We are looking forward to doing some relaxing and enjoying the setting here. It's "pickin' country and we were told that they get together just about every night and have some fun. We also timed it just right for the up-coming Renaissance Festival this weekend!! Sounds like it will be an enjoyable week!!
