Ignatian Mission & Identity Committee
March 1, 2005



Attendance:
Robert Bannister, Timothy Chik, Thomas Cummings, S.J., Thom Digman, Daniel Finucane, Ralph Houlihan, S.J., Michael Marchlewski, S.J., Mark Michalski, Shane Mulligan, Matthew Sciuto, Matthew Stewart, and Kate Thaman.

The meeting was called to order at 3:15 p.m. with a prayer and reflection offered by Thomas Cummings, S.J.

Ralph Houlihan, S.J. welcomed all in attendance and offered an overview of the purpose of the Committee:

a. To be a conduit to the Board of Trustees as to how Ignatian spirituality is being lived by our school community.

b. To encourage the living of Ignatian spirituality in our community.

Fr. Houlihan then asked for the members to review the membership of the Committee, the constituencies those members represented in our community, and requested suggestions for additions or modifications to the proposed Committee membership. A discussion followed.

Mr. Sciuto gave the Committee an outline of the types of programs, activities and resources which are currently available to faculty and staff as a result of initiatives created by those who attended the Colloquium this past summer. These resources included the Ignatian Lunches, bulletin board, discussion group and web page. It was determined that each member of the Committee should forward to Mr. Digman any additional resources, programs or activities which are currently undertaken at St. Louis University High so that a coordinated and comprehensive understanding can be made available to the community.

Fr. Marchlewski asked if the purpose of this Committee isn’t, or should be, centered on bringing everyone in the community closer to Christ. A lengthy discussion followed.

A discussion was then held regarding the students’ understanding, need and experience with Ignatian spirituality. A lengthy discussion followed.

A discussion was then held on the sacramental functions and needs of the school and how to best address these needs in the future.

The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m. with the following ACTION ITEMS assigned to various members of the Committee by Fr. Houlihan.

Fr. Cummings: Creating a program of instruction and reflection for the beginning of each meeting centered on or illuminating various aspects of Ignatian spirituality.
Fr. Marchlewski, Mr. Chik and Mr. Stewart: Drafting a VISION statement for the work of this Committee to be presented at our next meeting for discussion.
Mr. Sciuto: Continuing to define resources available from other Jesuit high schools regarding Ignatian spirituality.
ALL MEMBERS: Forwarding to the secretary any additional resources, programs or activities which are currently undertaken at St. Louis University High so that a coordinated and comprehensive understanding can be made available to the community.

The next meeting was set for Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 3:15 p.m. in the St. Ignatius Conference Room.
