Thomas Masters born 28th May 1870 in George Street, Monk Bretton, Barnsley.
Died at Highfield House Sackville Street, Barnsley. His parents were John
Masters born Willoughby Warwickshire and Lucy nee Woffenden born 17th July
1858 in Shafton, Cudworth, Barnsley. Apparantly Thomas in his teens was a Booky's runner and during a fracass a Policeman took him on one side and impressed on him that it was about time that he started to be responsible and look after his family the event caused him to become a staunch Methodist attending Pitt street Methodist Chapel. Thomas had a job working in a foundry ie Qualter Smith's.Here they wanted him to work on a Sunday and begin a Methodist he refused which meant that he would have lost his job and as he was the main provider to the family he approached the elders in the chapel and they loaned Thomas £5.00 with this he bought an Horse and Cart 1 Ton of Coal and started up in business in Haulage. Hello, I am trying to find out info on the above, and I noticed your excellent webiste, and the picture of William. I am trying to help my brother-in-law's sister-in-law find out about her family. She is descended from William's son Ralph. I noticed that you have no information on the ancestors of William Wilson and his wife Elizabeth Henderson. Is that still the case? I am stuck at the same spot. Did you by any chance find out where and when they married? Kind regards, Brian |

We have the same ancestor, Thomas Forster 4 Sep,1760 ----- Mary ? Forster 18 Oct,1763. Both from the Parish of Stamfordham, county of Nrthumbrlnd. I have no idea who the mother is of the "Morrins". I also found the marriage of Elizabeth Forster and Robert Robson I'm sure this is the same Elizabeth Forster (same dates) yet their children are not in the family Bible. In the back of our Bible it starts off with Edward Robson 28 Oct 1833 and Sarah Wilson 9 April 1838 married 01 May 1857 Hexham, Nrthmbrlnd They had 13 children my grandmother being one of them. This will help add some dates to our common ancestors and hopefully fill in some of those blanks. Your site has helped confirm the connection between Elizabeth Forster and Robert Robson. Please keep in touch and I will get back to you with more info as I find it. I will be coming to England next year to do more research and to walk the Hadrian wall, all 84 miles of it! I live in Florida, USA. Sincerely, Patricia Mielnicki |
Gloria Hesford | Email Available Upon Request | Crossland, Barnsley | Fifth Cousin |
Hi ! Chris, I am doing a search of my family history,
my nephew has sent me a link to your page. John
Crossland was my Gr Gr Grandfather therfore I wonder
if you would mind answering a couple of questions for
me. Firstly I would like to know your interest in him?
and why do you think he was born in Barnsley? (there
are a few of us doing research on this family (they
had 15 children) and one of the census say he was born
in Sunderland Durham and the 1841 census says not in
this county (Yorkshire) We do have a copy of a page
from the family bible saying his birthday was 21 Sept
1810 however I have found a John Crossland on the IGI
born in Barnsley and baptised on the 24 Sept 1809 I
wondered if that could be him and someone had got his
age wrong. I have information on Ann his wife I
wondered if you would like it. Hope to hear from you
soon,
Gloria Hesford
Hi! again Chris, once again I am sure we have the same man. He was born 21 Sept 1810? died 27 March 1887 Married Ann Townend 17 August 1834 Silkstone Parish church. They had 15 children amongst them Harriet born 26 Nov 1838 baptized 26 Dec 1838 died 16 Nov 1924 Census 1841 living George Yard Barnsley (where born says not of this county) Census 1851 (born say Durham Sunderland) the rest of the census say born Barnsley I do have his family tree and quite a bit of information including i might add a photo of John an Ann. I also have a list of Ann's family. Now are you still interested or do you still think we have the wrong person. Look forward to hearing from you. I am wondering what will be the best way to let you see what I have. There is quite a few people in Barnsley doing research on this family. Also I am in touch with people in Australia, the south and north of England but the mystery surrounds Johns birth place. There is also someone in Barnsley who has a family bible with all the names and dates of birth and Death of all the family. But no one knows where John was born. |
Kevin Phillips | Email Available Upon Request | Crossland, Barnsley | Fifth Cousin | Hi My name is Kevin Phillips and the Crossland family are distant ancestors of mine. John Crossland was born on 21 September 1810 and married Ann on 17 August 1834 in Silkstone Parish Church. She was born on 27 December 1816. Harriet was born on 26 Nov 1838 and died in November 1924 aged 86. Hannah was born on 14 March 1840 and died in December 1940 aged 100, having a very long life and was interviewed in the Barnsley Chronicle on 16 March 1940. She is mentioned in the pits book by John Threlkeld as having a premonition of the 1866 Oaks Pit disaster and persuaded her husband to change shifts two weeks before. I wish she was around now and I knew her, she could tell me the lottery numbers!!! All This is available in the Archives in Barnsley Library. John died on 25 March 1887 and Ann on 17 August 1888. They had 15 children. Email me back if you have any further inquiries. Best wishes. Kevin |

Glenda Parr | Email Available Upon Request | Masters, Staverton | Sixth Cousin |
Hi Chris, Having browsed your website I have come to the conclusion that our families are very distantly related. I was born Glenda Masters in 1947 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. My father John was also born in Chesterfield in1920 and his father Cecil in 1890. I had always assumed we were a Derbyshire family until I started to research them earlier this year. I then discovered that Cecil's father Thomas was born in Flore in Northamptonshire in 1848 and had moved to Chesterfield to work in the iron works. Thomas' father was born in Flore in 1827 and was a tailor as was his father also named Thomas born in 1799. This is where the link comes in Thomas was the son of John Masters and Sarah Spencer, making him the brother of Joseph. At this point my research conficts with yours as I discovered a John Masters born to William and Ann on 9th April 1761 also in Staverton. John had a brother Thomas who I feel would have been more likely to witness his marriage to Sarah than his father. William is the brother of the Thomas that you suggest is John's father and both are sons of Thomas and Ann Masters. This is as far as my research goes at the moment. The ironic twist is that in 1954 my family moved to Rugby Warwickshire which is only a few miles from Flore, Willoughby ,Wolfhamcote and Staverton and I have been able to do most of my research in our local library which has the church records on microfiche. I would be very interested to know if you have any more positive information as to John's father. As for my own family we are now Parr's but I do have a brother in Sydney Australia who has twin sons aged 21 and hopefully they will continue our Masters line. |

Hello Chris, I have just been looking at your very impressive geocities family tree where I see that you are a descendant of Joseph Woffenden a brother of my ancestor Sarah. Would you be interested in knowing more? Sarah married John Robinson; their son Joseph christened 12 Jul 1807 in Felkirk married Ann Sisson; their son Joseph b ca 1840 married 2nd Elizabeth Hannah Smailes; their son Donald b 12 Feb 1889 in Brayton, WRY & married Annie Marsdin; their 4th son of 5 Joseph Ian Robinson b in Bradford, WRY married Pauline Bosworth. These last are my parents and I was born Jan 18, 1945 in Knaresborough, WRY. We came to Canada in 1947 and I have lived here near Montreal ever since except for a year near Miami, Florida. I can flesh out these details somewhat for you if you are interested. Regards, Jann Robinson LaValley |

We share an interest in the above family. Thomas
Masters born 1663 was my 7th great grandfather. His marriage in Heyford looked
to me like Mun rather than Nun but for either name I have been unable to find
Mary (who since she was a widow may have given her maiden or old married
name). Have you had any luck? Have you sorted the Rushalls out - I have too many Johns at present to figure out who was related to who. Richard Kendell |

Masters, Staverton | Seventh Cousin |
Dear Chris I believe I am descended from Thomas Masters, who died in Staverton 28 April 1767 and was married to Anne (who died 27 August 1741 in Staverton). One of their five children, Thomas Masters, was christened in Staverton, Northants 30 December 1734, died in Staverton 26 February 1806, married Elizabeth Wafforn, the 31 October 1755 in Staverton (died 19 October 1782 in Staverton). They had 7 children, one of whom, Thomas Masters, was christened in Staverton 21 January 1760, married Ann Watson, 30 January 1777 in Staverton. They had nine children, one of whom, Stephen Masters, was christened in Staverton, Northants 5 September 1805, died in Staverton 10 April 1892, married Ann Shearsby, 14 November 1825 in Fenny Compton. One of his children was illegitimate. William Wilson (or Masters) was born in Harbury 15 February 1826, was christened in Harbury, Warwickshire 7 March 1828, married Caroline Shellswell, the 2 May 1844 in Harbury (daughter of Daniel Shellswell and Mary Horton). His mother was called Avica Wilson and I have the bastardy bond, making sure that Stephen contributed to his son's upkeep. I am a descendant of William Wilson or Masters and his wife Caroline. I would love to hear from anyone else descended from the Staverton Masters. Regards Louise |

Dixie Johnson-Moore | "dixie2l2@aol.com" | Johnson, Gateshead | Unproven | Although it's common in those days to name children the same names throughout the same family, Yours has our probability. I'm looking for my g.g.grandfather, Christopher Grey Johnson. He named his sons Robert, Thomas, George, William, James. When viewing this family, I noticed the same names. My gg.grandfather was a coalminer in America who came from Gateshead in 1855. I know much about him, but would love to place his siblings. Will make a trip to England when I can properly find the correct street name, parrish, family relations, etc. |

Stephenson, York | Unproven | I can find nothing about my Stephenson family who came from York. William Stephenson was a master builder who died round about 1915. His wife Maud Emily died two years later. They had five children, possibly three boys and two girls. One of the boys was Arthur William (or William Arthur) and one of the girls was Edna May. William Arthur was a choirboy at York Minster. |

Ingram, Wiltshire | Unproven | Hi, very impressed with your Ingram web-site,you may be able to assist with my 3 year search for info on Luke Ingram born 1787 (where?) but died 1840 at Clivey, near Westbury,Wiltshire a weaver,as were his children. Just wondered if it were possible he was linked to your family but moved south, possibly a soldier?. He was my g/g/g/grandfather, I have the complete family tree up until Luke, but cannot find his birth district, suspect I have found his two marriages in Wiltshire and proof that he was a strict Baptist, but further back is a mystery, I await your reply Dave Carter. |
Rosemary Richardson | "families @netcomuk.com" |
Stephenson | Unproven | Hello from London, UK. I came across your website when surfing for Robert Stephenson, Ballymoney. It seems I have reached the same conclusion about the ancestry of George Stephenson, railway engineer. My Australian Stephensons are reputed to be descendants of Henry Stivenson and Isobell Oliphir who married in Oxnam in 1735. I understand Henry was the son of William Stivenson who married in Oxnam circa 1706. William could be the brother of Henry "The Shepherd". Glad to make your acquaintance. Rosemary Richardson |
Deborah Barber | "debleegb @aol.com.com" |
Stephenson | Unproven | I wondered if you had come across an Abner Stephenson in your research of the Stephenson family. He was born May 18, 1812 in Wylam, England (was said to
be a nephew of George Stephenson), married Mary Ann Grant abt 1836 in Christ Church. Shortly after they were married they left for America, living in New
York, where they had their children; and moved to Virginia abt 1856. Other than the family notes that he was a nephew of George Stephenson, of the steam
engine fame, and Abner's birth date and place of birth, I have no other ancestral information about him -- I know nothing about his parents or siblings. I didn't even know where Christ Church was, only the name of the church. I saw in your Stephenson information that you have a Robert Stephenson getting married 1 October 1866 in the Parish of Christ Church, Newcastle-upon-Tyne -- I am thinking that it is likely the church where Abner and Mary Ann were married...at least one guess. Thank you for your time. I am hoping you may have encountered Abner in your research. Deborah Barber |

Masters, Andover (Mass) | Unproven | Dear Chris, I saw your listing on the "Masters Family Connection" website. I have hit a brick-wall with my Masters line and no one seems to know where my ancestor, William Masters came from. He lived to be 111 years old so records are sketchy. His 1883 Death certificate simply said he was from "Andover" no state or country... on one of his children's birth certificates it indicates he was from "Mass" but I have found no record of him in Andover Mass or anywhere else... I thought you may have some idea of his origins. I am attaching my masters line in a word document.... if you don't mind, could you take a look at it? Thank you. Joshua J. Toni | "amheater@cogeco.ca" | Tough, Banffshire | Unproven | My 2x great grandmother was Elizabeth TOUGH born 1842, Marnoch, Banffshire ... died 17 Feb 1897 in Craigmancie, Inverkeithny. Daughter of William TOUGH (c1809+/-) and Jessie ANDERSON (c1809+/-). On 8 Aug 1863, Elizabeth married William REIDFORD born 11 Oct 1842, Ordiquhill, Banffshire ... died Craigmancie on 19 July 1898. By this time, other family groups (Reidford etc) had migrated to villiages from Marnoch to Aberdeen City. So entirely possible for there to be a connections between my Toughs and those in Aberdeen. |

Masters, London | Unproven | I enjoyed your web page, especially the photos. Am I related? Probably not. My gt grandfather, Henry Masters is living in London in the 1881 census. He shows his birthplace to be Yorkshire. However, the only Henry Masters listed in the civil registration born in 1847 or 1848 in Yorkshire was born at East Cowton and seems to be living in Durham in the 1881 census. Therefore, I'm looking for other Masters families from Yorkshire with a Henry born about 1848. He was a cordwainer. His marriage certificate lists his father as John Masters, a coachman. |

Martin Lockett | Email Available Upon Request | Stephenson, Newcastle | Unproven | Hi, caught your web site today and wondered if there is
a connection. My grandmother (Elizabeth Alice Stephenson) was born 16
July 1873 in Weetslade Terrace. Her birth was registered in
Tynemouth, Longbeton, Northumberland. Funny thing is, her father was called
Robert H Stephenson and a Frederick John Stephenson was a
witness at her wedding to John Lockett on 27 August 1898. If this is
your Frederick that would make him 10 years old as a witness so I
guess its not the same person. Fred also had a daughter called Annie who
lived near me in Manchester (I believe Robert moved there with his
family) and your Fred had an unknown daughter by his first marriage. Regards, Martin |
