The Family Research concentration includes a substantial research experience and the development of an area of interest in a related field. . The Early Childhood Development and Education major is designed for students who plan on working with young children in school, family, and institutional settings. Certification options allow students to pursue careers as teachers and early interventionists. The Human Services tract is designed for students who wish to work in public and private agencies serving clients, infants through the aged, and their families. |

The emphasis of these programmes of study will be on the development of research skills and the preparation of an extended piece of independent research and writing consisting of a 30,000-word dissertation. Students will be required to attend a course on Research Skills and Methods and to attend the regular Postgraduate Research Seminar series, which will introduce them to a wide range of visiting speakers and to current research and debates within the disciplines of History of Art, or Film and Visual Media. Students will be expected to discuss appropriate dissertation topics at interview and to start work on their proposed subject at the beginning of the course. |
The Pediatric History Center preserves and organizes these materials to make them available for use by Academy members, staff, and outside researchers. Assistance with historical research is available through the archivist; however, individuals wishing to conduct extensive research are encouraged to make an appointment to visit the archives. Current and historical Academy documents and other publications on the development of pediatrics and the growth of the American Academy of Pediatrics. A growing oral history collection for use by members, staff and outside scholars. A collection of audio- and videotapes on the history of pediatrics as well as on various aspects of child health.

The major offers excellent training in how to understand family behavior, strengths, and problems using scientifically rigorous methods. Our Department awards a Bachelors of Science degree in Family Studies. The Family Studies major emphasizes the family as a dynamic social unit and examines individual and family development over the life span. It also addresses social, cultural, historical, and economic trends that affect family functioning and development. All students complete a 120-hour internship working in a family-related professional position in an area of career interest. |
