I made this web page because I had a copy of Windows ME which didn't have the boot files on it which would have allowed me to boot from the CD itself.
Instead I had to boot from a Windows 98 Startup disk and install from that.
I searched all over the web for the required boot files but couldn't locate them anywhere, sure I could find boot files for Windows 2000 or Windows XP and I could find tutorials on how to write boot files to a floppy and use that, but I wanted the original ME boot files, but nowhere could I find those to make ME bootable.
So I decided to rip the boot files from another Windows ME CD and upload them for you and here I'll show u how to use them to make your own Windows ME CD bootable.
STEP1
First of all your gonna need the boot files for Win ME. Download here.
WinME boot files
Also your gonna need CDRWIN. You can download the evaluation version Here . This version only lets u burn at 1x speed, but there are cracks available which will allow you to evaluate this as a full program with full speed support. Iam not going to give you this crack, but if you do a search for CDRWIN here Search you should be able to find one.
STEP2
Once you have downloaded the files and installed CDRWIN you then have to create a folder on your hard drive called ' Winmeboot '. Copy all the files off your Windows ME cd into this folder.
STEP3
Extract the files from the MEboot.zip and copy the OEMSETUP.EXE file and paste it into your Winmeboot folder overwriting the original. Start up CDRWIN.
STEP4
In CDRWIN choose File backup and tools then at the top where it says backup/tool operation choose Build and record an ISO9660 image file.
Where it says File backup list click Directory and find your Winmeboot folder. Highlight it and click ok. Then click add and tick these options.
1. Include hidden files.
2. Long file names(joilet).
3. Recurse subdirectories.
In ISO9660 options choose a name and suitable place for the image and then click advanced options. This is an important bit so pay attention.
Type the following in the options:-
1. Under volume descriptor:
Volume label - Windows Me
Publisher name - MICROSOFT_CORPORATION
Preparer name - MICROSOFT_CORPORATION
2. Under bootable disc:
Tick make bootable disc.
Media emulation type - 1.44mb Floppy
Image file name - Find the file called MEboot.bin which you extracted from the zip.
Developer name - Microsoft Corporation
All the others leave at default.
Tick Disable version numbers.
3. Under Recording options choose these options:-
1. Finalize/close session
2. Write post gap
3. Disc type - CDROM
4. Track mode - MODE1
5. Speed - whatever you want
Put a blank disc in the recorder.
Now click START and when it's finished you should have a bootable Windows ME disc.
