General description:
National roads 1 to 9 are the most important roads in the country. 2-digit numbers increase from 10 near the Atlantic coast to the east, then to the north, and roughly clockwise through the country. Numbers in the 40's are in the centre but the N43 is near Kinshasa and the highest number N44 is in the northeast (presumably these were assigned later). Zones for Regional roads are strict: when a road crosses a regional boundary, the number changes. Because of the first digit, the numbers are unique throughout the country. The second digit is almost always 0, 1, 2 or 3. Only in zone 2 there are numbers in the 40's (highest 244). | ||||||
