General description:
Mashreq international roads were introduced in 2001 but are not yet implemented. They form a network similar to European roads. Only three routes are partly in the United Arab Emirates.
E roads: The E11 is the main coastal highway from Qatar to Oman (Rus al Jibal). Other numbers consisting of the same two digits are main roads like the E88 from Sharjah to the east.
Only two 3-digit numbers are known: the E311 and the E611, which are parallel to the E11.
Dubai roads: Even numbers denote southwest-northeast roads, with numbers increasing to the northwest (towards the coast). Odd numbers are perpendicular to even numbers and increase to the northeast.
3-digit numbers are derived from 2-digit numbers by adding a digit at the end (which is different from the derivation for E numbers).
Fujairah roads: F[1-4]0 denote north-south routes, increasing from the coast to the west. Odd numbers also run north-south.
Sharjah roads: S numbers have three digits beginnign with 1.
There are several local road numbering systems. The numbers without letter in Al Dhaid and Kalba seem to be part of one system, since the same numbers do not occur in both cities. However, in Al Dhaid, even numbers run east-west and off numbers north-south, while in Kalba this is the other way round.
