General description:
Mashreq international roads have been introduced in 2001 but are not yet implemented. They form a network similar to European roads. National roads: Number 5 and odd 2-d numbers generally run north-south (though some are northwest-southeast) and numbers increase to the east. They all end in 5. 2-digit numbers (all ending in 0) run east-west or southwest-northeast and increase to the north. 3- and 4-d numbers are for less important roads. Zones are roughly as follows:
1 | South | 4 | Centre | |||
2 | Southwest | 5 | East | |||
3 | Northwest | 6 | Northeast
Recently, also numbers beginning with 7 and 8 have been introduced. These occur mainly in the north of the country.
Around Abha and Khamis Mushayt, there are 1- and 2-digit local road numbers. It is not clear how they are assigned.
Road signs: Blue with white text.
History: The system was probably introduced in the 1990's.
