General description:
The M1 and M2 are called motorways but this means that they are accessible to motorised traffic only. They have roundabouts and level crossings and are therefore not really motorways (see Definition of motorways). A and B roads are all considered main roads, and the classes are simply referred to as 'Route Principale A' and 'Route Principale B'. All A roads either lead to Port Louis or branch off a main road to Port-Louis. The A11 runs parallel to the A1 in Rose Hill. B numbers are assigned sequentially beginning with B1 in Rose Hill. There is some clustering. For example, numbers B11-B17 are all close together in the north of the island. The higher the numbers, the less clustering which suggests that higher numbers were assigned later (and probably in chronological order). The highest number is B89. | ||||||
