Motorway junctions with crossings at grade in the Netherlands and Germany

16-9-02

  1. Netherlands
  2. Germany
Red junctions are present motorway intersections with crossings at grade.

Netherlands

RoadsType of junctionRemarks
A1/A28RoundaboutChanged to cloverleaf around 1970
A1/A30(A30 to the south)
Strictly speaking, this is not a motorway interchange since the A30 is indicated as N30 on some signs. Therefore one might argue that the A30 starts just south of the exit from the A1, and the road is the N30 within the junction.
A2/A15RoundaboutChanged to cloverleaf around 1985
A2/A65(A2 to the east and south, A65 to the west)
Used to be an incomplete cloverleaf (E-N/N-E impossible). Reconstructed around 1993
A2/A67 (east)Roundabout with overpass for A67
A2/A12RoundaboutChanged to cloverleaf in 1966
A4/A12Roundabout with underpass for A12Changed to stack in 1985
A4/A13(A4 to the east and west, A13 to the south)
Before the A4 was extended to the southwest, this was a junction without crossings at grade. It was reconstructed around 1990, with direct connections E-S/S-E, but there are traffic lights at the end of the A13.
A6/A7Roundabout
A7/A32RoundaboutChanged to cloverleaf in 1999, roundabout used to link A7 and N32
A9/A200Roundabout with under- and overpasses for both motorwaysWhen this junction was opened in 1974, there was no overpass for the A9 yet. This was built around 1985.
A12/A348/N325Roundabout with overpass for A12When this junction was opened around 1955, there was no overpass yet for the A12. This was built around 1990.
A15/A27RoundaboutChanged to cloverleaf around 1980
A16/A17/A59(A16 to the north and south, A17 to the southwest, A59 to the southwest and south)
At the junction between the A16 and A17 it is not possible to continue on the A59. One has to leave the motorway via a (half)diamond, follow a minor road (that is signposted as A59 on a red patch!) and join the other motorway at another diamond.
A27/A59Diamond
A73/N326DiamondWhen the A73 was opened, the section of route 326 west of the A73 was the A326. Around 1998, part of this section was downgraded to N326. Therefore this is no longer a motorway intersection.

Germany

RoadsType of junctionRemarks
A1/A21Exit with some level crossingsThe A21 used to be the B404
A1/A43/A46/L551(A1 to the northeast and south, A43 to the north and A46 to the west, L551 to the east)
The A43 and A46 meet at an incomplete cloverleaf, but traffic from the A43 or A46 to the A1 northeastbound and v.v. goes via an ordinary exit with traffic lights (at the L551)
A1/A62(A1 to the west and south, A62 to the east)
The A1 continues without crossings at grade, but traffic from the A62 to the A1 southbound and v.v. goes via an ordinary exit
A7/A23W-N via exit to B4Until around 1995, the junction was incomplete (W-N/N-W not possible).
A27/A270/B74Roundabout and ordinary exitA section of the B74 was upgraded to A270 in 2001. Thus the exit became a motorway intersection. Traffic to and from the south goes via slip roads which are directly connected to the roundabout but traffic to and from the A27 north has to go via the (partial cloverleaf) exit Ihlpohl, about 1 km further north.
A42/A516/B223(A41 to the west and east, A516 to the north, B223 to the north and south)
Strictly speaking, this is not a motorway intersection since the intersecting road is the B223. The A516 starts about 500 m further north but it is signposted on the A42. All traffic between the A42 and the A516 has to pass traffic lights. There is one extra ramp but this only allows N-E traffic to avoid crossing any northbound traffic.
A46/A57 (west)(A46 to the southwest and east, A57 to the northwest and east)
Originally the A46 was planned to bypass Neuss further south and this junction was only between the A57 and the B1. There are now plans to reconstruct this junction to make it fully grade separated.
A46/A540/B59Diamond
A66/A671/B263(A66 to the west and east, A671 to the south, B263 to the north)
This is like an ordinary exit but it has extra slip roads. Only a few turns have crossings at grade: W-S traffic crosses N-E traffic and E-S traffic crosses N-W traffic.
