General description:
Motorways: All known numbered motorways are from Rabat. The A1 goes to Tanger, the A2 to Fes and the A3 to Casablanca. National roads: Even numbers 2-16 run roughly east-west with numbers increasing to the south. The N2 is the main coast road from Tanger to the Algerian border. Odd numbers 1-17 run roughly north-south. The N1 is the main west coast road from Tanger to Al-Gargarat near the Mauritanian border. The odd numbers N3-N9 go to the south from the N1, with numbers increasing to the northeast. The N11 is diagonal northwest-southeast and links the N9 and N8. Higher odd numbers are north-south routes further east. Secondary roads: Numbers beginning with 1 form zone 1 in the southwest. Zone numbers increase to the northeast up to zone 6 near the Algerian border. Zone 7 is in the centre of the country. Odd numbers generally run north-south and even numbers east-west, but there are a number of exceptions. In some zones, odd numbers increase to the east and even numbers to the north, but in others numbers appear in arbitrary order. Local roads: Zones roughly correspond to the ones for Secondary roads but there is no zone 7. Odd numbers generally run north-south and even numbers east-west, but there are a number of exceptions. In some zones, odd numbers increase to the east and even numbers to the north, but in others numbers appear in arbitrary order.
Road signs: White with black text.
History: The current system was probably introduced in the late 1990's.
Most maps still have the old system.
Motorway numbers were just special Principal road numbers. The new numbers are far more systematic.
