General description:
National roads: RN1-5 evolve in clockwise order around the capital Bujumbura. The RN1 goes to the northeast, the RN2 branches off the RN1 towards Gitega, the RN3 goes to the south along Lake Tanganjika, the RN4 goes to the west along Lake Tanganjika and the RN5 runs to the northwest. RN6 and 7 continue in clockwise order: RN6 branches off RN1 and RN7 is to the southeast. The RN 8 is a north-south road linking Gitega (Rn2) and Rutana (RN7). The RN9 goes to the north from Bujumbura. Other RN roads (with 2-d numbers) are less important.
Provincial roads: There is no clear zone system for RP roads but consecutive numbers tend to be close together. Also, 3-d numbers beginning with the same digit are close together. Numbers continue across provincial borders.
Road signs: No information available
History: There used to be RIG roads (Route d'Intéret Général) with 1- and 2-d numbers. Most of these have been upgraded to National roads. For example, the RIG9 became RN9. Provincial roads were probably introduced when RIG roads became obsolete.
