PART 2

A week had gone by since the party and Louise heard no more from James. In a way she felt relieved but in another felt like something was missing. It was new years eve and was getting ready for a party at a new nightclub near to her house. Kirsty had made pre party cocktails and filling Louise in on the gossip before they went out.
"I heard James' marriage isn't as rosy as you' think" she said "Apparently he and Mylene had a massive row after Nick's party"
Louise frowned "Why, they seemed ok when we were speaking to them, did Nick say what it was about?"
"All I know is that Mylene was angry at James for not paying her enough attention"
"That's ridiculous - they were together most of the night" Louise felt flushed and confused by her instinct to defend her ex boyfriend
"Well, she might've been glued to him all night, what matters is he was watching you" explained Kirsty gently, not wanting to upset her friend.

Louise was relieved to end the conversation as the taxi arrived but thoughts were racing through her head - why was he watching her? Why was his wife so angry?
The New Year party was already busy when they arrived. Kirsty spotted a guy shed met a few weeks earlier and began chatting to him, introducing Louise to an attractive friend of his. The evening went by quickly, Louise was relived not to have seen James or Mylene anywhere and soon forgot about them and had a good time dancing and chatting to other people she knew.

Someone started a countdown just before midnight and Louise joined in the cheering as the New Year began. Everyone was hugging and kissing. Louise whirled around her friends tipsily hugging them, telling them how wonderful they were.
“No kisses for me then?” a familiar voice next to her

Slightly drunk and confused, Louise turned and kissed James lightly on the cheek breathing in his cologne and the tingle of slight stubble as she did so, then realised what she’d done “That shouldn’t have happened, I’m sorry, I should go find…” she babbled turning away suddenly sobered. James grabbed her wrist and pulled her back

“Wait, please, just hear me out” he pleaded “I can’t stop thinking about you, you’re a stunning beautiful person and I broke your heart. I meant it when I asked if we might be friends again. I’m so sorry”

“But what about your wife James? What about breaking her heart?” Louise fired back angrily “You think you’re still the bachelor playing the field and you’re not, it’s too late, you can’t come back and think it’s still ok. Out of time James, isn’t that how the song goes?”

“Believe me, I’m not playing the field… it’s over with Mylene and me, has been for a while but neither of us wanted to admit it, she’s been having affairs for months and I just found out… she just wants some arm candy to take her to parties. I want more than that. I want you” he stopped and looked at Louise intently and she stared back unable to say anything or break his gaze. James put his hands on her waist and pulled her towards him. She closed her eyes and slipped her arms around his neck as she pressed against his toned body and he kissed her.

“Happy New Year” he whispered.
