She had always thought that with James, it was purely physical, but it wasn't. She loved him, she ached for him, and not only in a sexual way. I was wondering how you are.” “Apart from not being able to sleep, I'm fine. I didn't expect you to call, not after what happened.” “I wanted to say sorry. I was nasty to you, and you didn't deserve it.” “After what I'd told you, it didn't come as much of a surprise.” “I'll call you again, later today, if that's alright?” “I'd like that. Sleep well May.” “Night Richey.” Quietly, she put the phone back down, and turned to cuddle James; he was awake. “You miss him,” he said simply. May nodded. “Yeah, I do. If I was with him, I'd be missing you.” “I'm sorry. Me and Richey, well, we had no right to put you through this.” “It was going to happen sooner or later. You know that as well as I do.” She gave the tip of his nose a quick kiss. “I didn't believe that it was possible to be in love with two people at the same time, until now.” “But you believe in monogamy,” James pointed out. “That means that you, have a decision to make.” “How am I supposed to choose between you? Maybe I should get you and Richey to have a duel? Who ever wins, gets me.” “I'd win,” chuckled James. “You know Richey hates violence.” “Umm, fair point,” she said in agreement. “What about taking it in turns? I can see you for a month, then Richey, then you...” “No good. I'd go crazy when I had to give you to Richey.” “So, either I sacrifice my principles, or, I have to say goodbye to you both, as far as a relationship goes.” “I'd call it 're-evaluating' your principles. You've already done that by agreeing to sleep with Richey, and then with me, without any sort of courtship. It's not that big a deal.” “You make it sound so easy,” she laughed. Her fingertips were gently playing with James' chest, and abdomen, making him sigh in pleasure. How could she turn her back on him, when she loved him so much? Then again, how could she turn her back on Richey, when she loved him? “May?” James asked, with a grin on his face. “Yes?” “Are you tired, or can I make love to you?” May smiled, and kissed his lips sweetly. “Making love sounds good to me.” May was already on her second cup of coffee, when James joined her in the kitchen, dressed only in his boxer shorts. “Morning gorgeous,” he said with a big smile. “I didn't hear you get up.” “I was going to wake you up,” she tittered, “but decided to leave you to sleep.” He sat at the table with her. “How are you this morning?” “I'm ok. I've been doing a bit of thinking about things.” “Have you come to any conclusions?” “I think so,” she said, with a shrug of her shoulders. “That is, I have, but then I worry that I won't be able to do it.” “Do what?” There was no pressure in his voice. “See both of you.” “Really?” James smiled broadly. “That sounds like a solution to me.” “Hmm.” “Tell me what's worrying you.” “Jealousy. What if I get jealous of you and Richey? Or if you get jealous of me and Richey? Or, maybe Richey will get jealous of you seeing me?” He held her hands softly, and moved them up to his mouth, bestowing light kisses on them. “If you have doubts, you don't have to do anything.” “I know,” she said, leaning into him, and kissing his mouth. “I called Richey, and told him we'd be at his for about eleven, is that ok?” “That's fine by me. Are you certain that you want to try this May?” “James, all I know is that I don't want to lose either of you.” They had a coffee, and some toast, and then went to get a shower. Although they were both feeling frisky, they didn't have full sex because there were no condoms left. “I'll buy us several large boxes from a chemist shop, when we drive to Richey's,” giggled James, putting his socks on. “We'll need a few between the three of us.” “Richey might say no,” said May. “We don't know if he's changed his mind, until we get there and talk to him about it.” “If he has, he'll soon change it back. This will be his idea of heaven.” May shrugged her shoulders, and sighed heavily. “Umm.” “What?” “Just say, that we can all accept the situation, and for six months, maybe a year, we have a lot of fun. Then what? How can any of the relationships progress, when there are three of us in it?” “I don't understand.” “It doesn't matter how deeply in love any of us are, because nothing will change will it? No one can get engaged, and how could we live together?” “Or get married and have kids?” It was as though he was reading her mind. “We'll find a way. There's nothing to stop the three of us sharing a house together.” “And will we have a rota system for who shags who, and when?” “You've made your point, and yes, it is a valid one. Who knows, maybe one or more of the relationships will fizzle out?” “This is a bad idea! Why did I think I could go through with it? It's a bloody mine field.” “It's not too late to change your mind. In fact, you can back out of this at any time, any of us can.” “How do we explain it to our families? They'll think that we've all gone completely crazy.” “Why do they need to know? If we all lived together, we'd just say that we were sharing.” “Don't be so naïve! With the money that you and Richey have, why share? And, why would you ask me to share with you? That will create more problems than it solves.” “We'll all keep living separately then.” “Sounds like we'll be using a rota system then,” said May with a touch of irony. “I'd hate to turn up at yours or at Richey's, to find you shagging each other.” James reached over, and pulled her down on the bed, lovingly stroking her face, and kissing her lips. “Look, Richey and me, we'll be the first to fizzle out, I know that we will. Richey won't want to be with me, not when he has you, and I, well, I love you May, I want you more than I want Richey. As for anything else, we'll have to see how they work out, but, I know what I want to happen. I want you to stay with me, have a family, the whole nine yards.” “Family?” “Don't sound so shocked! I've always wanted to have children.” “And Richey?” “He does too.” “Now, there's a thing!” said May. “What?” “What if I got pregnant? We wouldn't know who the father was.” “So, move in with me, and we'll have a baby, and get married.” “Bloody hell, James! I thought you wanted the three of us to be together?” “I did some thinking of my own,” he said. “I want you in my life, forever. I'd give up Richey right now, last night proved to me just how much I love you. What I have with Richey, and the way I feel about him, doesn't come close to what we have, May.” “James, I love both you and Richey. That is why I am in this mess, in the first place.” “I guess it's all down to you and Richey then,” he sighed heavily, worried that he could end up without her in his life, other than as a friend, if May and Richey got close, and discovered that they wanted to have a monogamous relationship. “Great, all of the pressure is back on me again! I ought to walk out on both of you.” “If that's what you think you need to do,” said James, shrugging his shoulders, and looking away from her, “then that's what you have to do. Of course you do realise that we'll both be devastated, don't you?” “This is all going to end in tears, I can feel it. The whole situation is just too bizarre for words, and I'm the stupid one for getting sucked in to it. At some point, this whole house of cards will come crashing down around our heads, and we'll have to sort the ruins of it out, in the feeble hope that we can salvage a friendship.” “For what its worth, I'm not happy about it either,” James confessed. “When I discussed it with Richey, the three of us seeing each other sounded like the perfect solution. Now, all I can see are the pitfalls, and it scares me.” “What scares you most?” “Losing you.” They continued their discussion all the way over to Richey's home, and were still no closer to finding a solution that ensured none of them got hurt. As much as May wanted to have James, and Richey in her personal life, she also knew that tensions would arise at some point - it was merely a matter of time. Richey gave them both a hug, and they walked through to the lounge. A few minutes later, Richey was back carrying a tray with their drinks on it. “Did you spend the night together?” Richey asked with a wry grin on his soft, handsome features. “Yeah, we did,” smiled James. “And I'm pleased about it, more than pleased about it. May has made me realise quite a few things, Richey, and one of them is how much I love her.” “How do you feel about James?” Richey asked May. “I love him Richey. Last night, was supposed to be a night of fun and sex.” “I sense a 'but' coming up.” “One night with James isn't enough, I want more. I love him.” Richey seemed to be on the verge of tears, but neither James, or May, wanted to interrupt whilst he appeared to be thinking. “Are you telling me that I'm been jilted already?” He asked the question to both of them. “No,” they answered together. Then May continued to speak, on her own: “I love you as well. I don't particularly want to stop seeing either of you.” A huge, beaming smile, spread over Richey's features, and he moved next to her, hugging her warmly, and kissing her lips briefly. “Oh love, thank you. We can all be together, it will be wonderful.” James and May, took deep breaths, and stared at Richey, no smiles or other outward signs of joy, evident from either of them. “It's not that easy Rich,” said James flatly. “Things may be ok at first, but how long before jealousy creeps in? Or one relationship progresses deeper than another? And, if May gets pregnant, we wouldn't know who the father was.” “Would it matter? The baby could have two fathers; it wouldn't be a problem.” “Yes it would,” said May sadly. “Think about it Richey. Think about all of the questions that our family and friends would have.” “What business is it of theirs? If we're all happy with the arrangement, there is little they can do about it. We can all live together, and, if you do have a baby, we can do a DNA test, to find out which of us is the father.” “I wish that I possessed your optimism,” May sighed. “And,” said James nervously. “I can't be with you Richey. I love May too much.” “Oh.” Richey was sad, and downcast. James was a big part of his life, and he wasn't sure how he would cope without him. “Why can't we still be together occasionally James?” “Because, I want to be with May. I've done a lot of thinking Richey, and me and May have done a lot of talking; there are more problems with this than solutions.” “You want me to tell you and May to go off and be happy together? I can't. James, I love her too, and I can't let her go without fighting for her.” “I think,” said May, “that we all need to be aware of the possible problems, discuss them, and take it from there. I love you both, if I didn't we wouldn't be in this state, would we? I can't decide between you, and I will not be forced into choosing one of you, over the other. What you both need to accept though, is the very real possibility, that my emotions for one of you will deepen, beyond that of the other. Now, I don't know who I would fall heavily for, and want to be with, but if I came to you, and said it was over, would you be able to accept it? Could you be happy for us? Would you two, still be friends?” For two hours, they discussed all of the possible implications, that such a relationship, could throw at them. Surprisingly, there were no raised voices, no bitching, and no nastiness. They discussed it all rationally, and at times, even managed to share a joke. At the end of the two hours, they had reached an amicable agreement; May was to see both Richey and James, but the two men would no longer be lovers. If, at any time May wanted to stop seeing either, or both of them, James and Richey would accept her decision graciously, and continue to be friends. Should either of the men become jealous, they were to let May know, and they would then talk about the best course of action to follow. “So,” said Richey, flashing a cheeky glint in his eyes, “do I get to see you tonight or tomorrow night?” “Neither!” giggled May. “I'm with James today, and tomorrow I'm going to busy, so I'll be having an early night. How about the following night? I could come over here to see you.” “You're on!” Surprisingly, the love triangle moved along quite nicely, both men sticking to what they had agreed, and not pressurising May. However, as talk of Christmas, and Richey's birthday became topics of conversation, May grew more and more concerned about things. Her relationship with James, was progressing to the point were she wanted to stop sleeping with Richey, but Richey was making plans for her to spend his birthday with him, and she wasn't sure how to tell him that she didn't think it would be a good idea. How could she hurt him now? For once Richey was eagerly anticipating his birthday, and Christmas, instead of experiencing the usual dread, that accompanied the two celebrations. It was the beginning of December, and May was at James' home, spending the night with him. “James?” “What's wrong honey?” he asked nervously. May sounded worried, and that concerned him. Was she about to tell him that he was dumped? “I'm going to upset Richey. I have to tell him that I can't be with him for his birthday, and he's making all these plans.” “Yeah, he's told me about them. I thought that you'd love them.” “You helped him?” “Don't sound so surprised!” he laughed, and gave her a quick kiss on her nose. “I want you to be happy.” “I haven't been having sex with Richey,” she said quietly. “For the last three or four weeks, all we've done in bed is kiss and cuddle.” “Really? He didn't say anything to me. Is there something wrong?” “You could say that.” “Wanna share it with me? I may be able to help.” May took a deep breath, and gazed straight into James' eyes. “I want to stop seeing Richey, and just see you. I want to be with you, James. I feel like I'm cheating on you when I'm with Richey.” “But you're not cheating on me, are you? I know all about it, so stop worrying.” She screwed her eyes up, confused by what James had said. “Don't you want me to be with you?” “You know that I do,” he said softly. “But I'm not finding it as difficult as I thought I would. When you're with Richey, I don't think about it. As far as I'm concerned, we can't see each other because you're busy, and that's it.” “And if I wanted to be with you all of the time? Would you want that?” “Of course I would! I'd love it, May. All I would suggest, is that you stay with Richey until into the New Year, and forget about cheating on me, because you aren't. Richey is in love with you May, you need to have tried to make the relationship work.” “I can't help being in love with you, and wanting to be with you.” “Do you still love Richey?” “Of course I do,” she protested angrily. “Then try and make it work. If you still feel the same by the end of January, then I'll be here for you. What harm can waiting six weeks or so, do? I'm not going anywhere am I?” “I warned you that this would get complicated,” May sighed. “We'll manage,” chuckled James. “We always do, don't we?” With James' words echoing in her ears when she next spent the night with Richey, May tried to rekindle their romance, and they did spend the night having sex – lots of it. “I thought you'd gone off me,” said Richey, cuddling up with her later. “It's been a long time since we made love.” “I was having a crisis of conscience,” May admitted. “Sorry, Rich.” “You're in love with James, aren't you? It's ok, I've suspected it for a while now.” “I do still love you, you know. Can you still see me, knowing that I'm in love with him? James wants me to give me and you another chance; he doesn't want me to end it.” “Why?” Richey was puzzled. “Is he not in love with you?” “There's more to it than that. James said that you're in love with me, and, because I still love you, we should try and work it out. He's coping with it all pretty well, I must say.” “Actually, there's something that I need to tell you,” said Richey, his cheeks blushing to a rosy glow. “I met a girl, a friend of Rachel's, and she's really nice. I've been out with her a couple of times, and, erm...” “You want to see more of her?” May smiled tenderly, and held his hand. “You're not mad?” “Richey, I'm pleased for you!” “You don't mind if we call it quits after tonight? As much as I love you, I know that you and James are in love with each other, so, go and be happy!” “And the plans for your birthday?” “Forget them. I'd like for us all to go out for a drink somewhere, and I'll take Lois along, if you don't object?” “Hey, she's your girlfriend, of course she should be there!” “I was so nervous about telling you about her,” he tittered. She blushed, and gave a little laugh. “I'm pleased that we did this tonight, and that we talked. Its a good way to part isn't it?” “Good terms is always best, if you can.” “If you don't mind, I'll ring James and tell him I'm on my way over?” He kissed her warmly. “You do that. He'll be thrilled to see you.” “I wish you and Lois all the luck in the world Richey.” “And the same to you and James. He's a lucky fella.” James was shocked, but delighted, when May told him that she was on her way to see him, especially when she told him that she had some good news, to tell him about. As soon as she stepped into his home, James was pestering her to tell him what had happened, and what the good news was. May poured them both a glass of wine, and then proceeded to inform him of what had happened with Richey. “The sly fox!” grinned James. “I'm happy for him. I guess that this means that you're all mine now?” “Can you cope with that?” she teased. “You'll have to spend more time with me, and make love with me more often.” “Christmas has come early!” he laughed. “That is the best present I could have.” The New Year's Eve party at Rachel's house was in full swing. Richey was there with Lois, and she and May had become good friends, and often went out together. Sean and Nicky were there, with their wives, and James was there with May. All of them were having a great time, and doing lots of dancing. Suddenly, Rachel turned off the music, and switched the sound on the television. “Get ready everyone,” she yelled about the noise. “The countdown is going to start.” “10” “9” “8” “7” “6” “5” “4” “3” “2” “1” “Happy New Year!” The party poppers exploded in the air, and whistled were blown. James held May tightly in his arms, and kissed her passionately, not caring at the stares they were getting from his friends. “Happy New Year darling!” he said to her. “I love you.” “Happy New Year James,” she replied. “Can we go home soon?” “Aren't you enjoying it?” “Yeah,” she loved. “Its just that I can't wait to get you into bed.” “Really? Hey, lucky me! I'm not going to complain about that,” he laughed. “There is one question I wanna ask you first though.” “What?” “Will you marry me?” “Oh James! Yes, I will!” She flung her arms around his shoulders, and kissed him. James got everyone to quieten down after they had sang 'Auld Lang Syne', and proudly told them, that he and May were going to be getting married. Richey was the first person to congratulate the happy couple in person. “Well you fooled me,” he chuckled, “I thought you'd propose on Christmas day! I'm happy for you both, truly, I am. You'll be very happy together, well done!” “Thanks Richey,” said May, giving Richey a hug. “You and Lois are getting along well, I see?” “Yeah, she's lovely. We're taking it slowly, but I'm happy with her.” “Good.” “You deserve to be happy Richey,” said James. “It won't be long till you're getting married!” “Hey, behave!” James made sure that they had full glasses for a toast. “To the three of us!” “To the three of us!” they all said in unison. “Happy New Year!” said Richey. “The next New Year party is going to have to go some, to top the last two New Years Eve parties, isn't it?” “Maybe we'll have another announcement to make?” grinned James. “Ah, a baby! Ooh, that would be great! I'd be a great Godfather, James.” “Don't worry,” said May, “you'll be the first person we ask.” James carried May over the threshold, and then kissed her slowly, and deeply for an age, until she broke the kiss. “Come on, time for bed,” she whispered. “We need to bring in the New Year in style.” <<< Melody's stories |
