COMPLEX RELATIONSHIPS by Melody

PART 1

“Hi ya Rachel. Is Nicky ready?” Denise asked greeting Rachel and following her through to the lounge.
“Does he know that James won't be going?”
“Yeah, Terri called and told him. He's been in a strop since.”
“I'm not surprised. He'll be sick of doing interviews by the time he's finished. Luckily I've managed to get a few journalists to agree to joint ones but there were a few that insisted on one to ones. That's why I had to  tag an extra day on.”

“I warn you now that he's in a foul mood, and I mean
FOUL!”
“I'm sorry Rache, I know he finds it hard being away from home. Unfortunately circumstances have  conspired and they dictate these things.”
“Hey I understand, don't worry. It's not the first time that this has happened and I dare say it won't be the last,” she sighed with a half hearted smile. “Actually I feel sorry for you. The journey is bad enough  without having him for a passenger when he's like this.”

“Don't worry,” chirped Nicky joining them, “I'll be nice to Denise.”
“You say that as though you have a choice,” Denise chuckled, walking over to him. “You know damn well  that if you give me any grief I'll kick you out of the car.”
Nicky grinned and ruffled up her short brown hair. “Empty threats.”
“Care to test the theory?”
“If you do get kicked out of the car,” taunted Rachel, “don't bother calling me. Oh and remember that my mum is staying over tomorrow night.”

“Ok love.” Nicky smiled, taking her in his arms and kissing her. “You have the telephone number for the  hotel don't you?”
“And the room number so stop worrying,” she rubbed her nose against her husband's. “Keep smiling.”
“I'll try. I'll call you when I've got settled in.”
“Ok, have a safe journey.”
“Bye Rache, I'll take good care of him.”
“If he doesn't drive you to distraction, forcing you to kill him first!”
“You could be right.”

Nicky put his cases in the boot of Denise's car and stacked them beside Denise's bags. After shutting the boot he turned to wave to Rachel, blowing her a kiss before getting into the car. Nicky continued waving and blowing kisses until Rachel was no longer in view.

“Pull over when you get chance,” Nicky said ten minutes into the journey.
Shortly after Denise pulled up in a layby on the quiet country road. “There you go,” she announced,  putting the hand brake on. She turned to face him. “Is here ok?”
Nicky unbuckled his seatbelt and then Denise's. “Here is perfect,” he murmured, capturing her mouth in a deep, long kiss. When they withdrew from the kiss, both were panting. “I have wanted to do that since you came to pick me up. Did you intend to make me wait until we got to the hotel?”
She giggled. “No, but I did wonder how long it would be before you asked me.”
“Hmm you know, it's a long time since I made out in a car. Drive down to the woods and park up.”

“Shagging on the back seat of a car is for the young ones isn't it?”
“Also for the adventurous and inordinately randy!”
“What am I going to do with you huh Nick?”
He threw his head back and laughed. “Now there's a silly question!”
“I guess. You know what?” she mentioned. Nicky shook his head. “I've missed being alone with you. Two  weeks can be such a long time.”

“We have time alone now. No worrying about anyone walking in on us.” He caught the sombre expression on Denise's face. “What is it love?”
She sighed heavily, screwed up her face and took a deep breath. “You're not going to like what I have to say.”
“It can't be that you want to stop seeing me. Not after that last remark.”
Nervously Denise gazed at him. “Stolen moments aren't enough. I ache for you Nick. I know that I'm being unreasonable, I knew when we started that you were married. What I didn't expect was to fall in love with you.”
“Oh,” he answered with a smile, “that's not such a bad thing.”

“Tell that to your wife. This is irrational.
I am being irrational. I was jealous of you kissing your wife for goodness sakes! Perhaps we ought to stop before either of us gets hurt.”
“Denise I don't want to stop seeing you. I want to see more of you. I
want to be with you. Pat came to see us last weekend and I told him that I was thinking of leaving Rachel.”
“You're what?” spluttered Denise.
“He knows all about us, has done from day one when I fell for you all those years ago.”
“Oh God!” Denise exclaimed in shock. “But he's always been so nice to me.”

Nicky giggled. “Look, Pat doesn't approve of what we're doing but he does understand. Until I was certain that you loved me I couldn't leave Rachel. I had to know that you wanted me enough before I went sacrificing my marriage.”
“Do you realise what you're saying?”
“I'm asking you to be with me. We can find a house together.”
“This is a dream. Any minute now I'll wake up.”
“It's no dream,” winked Nicky, cupping her face in his huge but gentle hands. “Say the word and it will be reality. I love you Denise.”

His lips met hers, making her tingle. She whimpered and moaned, their tongues dancing erotically together, inflaming their passions. Nicky put a hand on her right thigh, stroking her nearer and nearer the warm wetness that was flowing from her.

“I erm think,” Denise stammered, slightly out of breath, “that we should continue this in the relative privacy of those woods.”
“Good idea,” Nicky smirked, sitting back in his seat and fastening the seatbelt. “Let's see how steamed up we can get this car shall we?”
Denise said nothing. She merely blushed, fastened her own seat belt and then began the drive to the woods.

“I honestly can't believe that we are about to make out in this car.”
Nicky chuckled, taking in her naked beauty. “Ah the car now, a huge hotel bed later. One cramped, one spacious. Quite an experience for one evening.”
Denise shivered under his sensual touches, guiding him closer to her wetness. “I need you Nicky. Please don't keep me waiting.”
With passion and enthusiasm Nicky kissed her whilst steadily guiding her into a more comfortable and  accessible position. “Oh honey I can't wait either.”

He smiled at her, softly caressing her face, slowly edging his large erection inside her, moaning with pleasure when her slick warmth enveloped him completely. Denise curled a leg onto his back allowing him to probe deeper.

“Nick I've missed you,” she whimpered, her fingers leaving trails over his thrusting backside.
“Shush I know, but we're together now, just you and me.”
“Mmm. Oh harder! Fast, furious and deep Nick, please.”
He lifted his head and gazed down at her, her eyes full of lust and want. “Always happy to oblige.”

Denise clawed at his back, the strength of his thrusts driving her to wold abandon. Two weeks of desire and sexual frustration needed to be sated. Raw urgent sex was precisely what they both yearned for at that  moment.

They came in unison. Nicky bit down on Denise's shoulder when the pounding waves of his orgasm assailed his body. Denise growled, bucking her hips violently, her orgasm over powering her. Exhausted, Nicky collapsed, his head resting on her breasts, finding their gentle rise and fall comforting.

A phone started ringing. Recognizing it as his mobile Nicky frantically hunted through his clothes, eventually finding it in his jacket pocket. 'Rachel' flashed up on screen. “Hi what's up?”
Denise was close enough to hear what Rachel was saying. She wanted to know how the journey was going.
“We're making good progress,” winked Nicky giving Denise's nipples a quick tweak. “I think its fair to say that we're further on than we anticipated.”
Denise flashed him a mischievous smile and shook her head. She then moved over on the back seat, dipping her head into Nicky's lap and planting little kisses on his penis. Though it was flaccid, her kisses reawakened it and it began to rise and stiffen quickly.

“It doesn't sound like you're moving,” mentioned Rachel. “Are you stuck in traffic now?”
Nicky took a deep breath, desperately needing to control his panting. “We're moving along steadily,” he managed to stammer.
“Nicky are you ok?”
“I'm fine. I was yawning that's all. Perhaps I ought to have a nap.”
“Good idea. I'll talk with you later.”
“I'll call you. Speak later.” Without waiting for Rachel to say her goodbye's he turned off his phone. “That phone is staying off until we're finished,” he said throwing it onto the front passenger seat.

Denise winked coquettishly at him and took his penis deep into her mouth.
“You know how to drive a man crazy,” Nicky managed to say though somewhat short of breath. “Don't  stop.”
As if she would! She had no intention of stopping until Nicky had cum in her mouth.

“I'll talk with Rachel as soon as we get back,” announced Nicky. He was clad in a brief towel and was rubbing his hair furiously with another to dry it. “Besides if I don't tell her she'll be asking questions about  the claw marks on my back and arse.”
Denise was sprawled on the bed reading a book. “Mmm sorry about that. She's going to hate me, not that I blame her. Talk about being a two faced bitch.”

Nicky threw the towels down on the floor and then joined her on the bed. “For what it worth she's going to hate me more. At the end of the day I've broken my wedding vows, you on the other hand have never tried  to be a mate of hers have you?”
“No but I'm still stabbing her in the back and betraying her trust. Think of all the flak we'll get from Martin, he's going to go mental. That'll put the mockers on me working closely with you again. He'll be worried  that my impartiality is compromised.”

“There have never been any complaints. James and Sean both know that you'll listen to all our ideas and  evaluate them carefully.”
“Damn, this is going to be so complicated,” sighed Denise heavily, putting her book on the nightstand.
“Are you have second thoughts about us coming out?” Nicky dare not gaze at her, afraid of what her
reaction would betray.
“Oh honey No!” she stressed stroking his face and kissing his cute button nose. “It's just that we are going to cause one hell of a shit storm. Hall or Nothing will be full of furtive whispers, plus of course the gossip columns will have a field day. Talk about manna from heaven.”

“Hmm, not to mention the fans.”
“I don't wanna think about them yet. Let's get all of the other hurdles out of the way first.”
“Only warning you love. You know that members of our families and workers from Hall or Nothing visit Manics websites. It won't take long for the news to spread.”
Nervously Denise giggled. “You know it's a bloody good job that I love you Nicholas Jones because you're not doing a very good job of selling yourself or putting my mind at ease! Honestly, the way you're describing it I think I'd get a better reaction if I said I was involved with Hannibal Lecter!”

Nicky couldn't help but snigger. “Sorry, You've always known what a pessimist I am though.”
“I know but I love you all the same.”
Nicky shuffled down the bed a little, scooping Denise into his arms, giving her a deep lingering kiss. “I love you,” he murmured when his lips left hers.
“I know,” she smiled. “I don't want to nag you but you did promise you'd call Rachel when you got here. While you do that I'll call Martin.”
“Checking in with the boss huh?”
“Something like that,” she winked. “Actually I'm going to tell him not to call me during the night. I'm telling him a little white lie – that I'll be using earplugs so won't hear.”

“Bad girl!”
“Aren't I just? I'll have to remember to make my hotel room seem lived in or the maids will be talking.”
“Is that why you've set the alarm?”
“Oh you noticed? I thought I'd better had, don't want anyone seeing me entering or leaving your room at silly hours do we? Let's at least give the impression of propriety. Once Rachel knows it will be different.”
“I could tell her when I called,” mooted Nicky.
“You can get that stupid idea out of your head right now,” Denise said angrily. “That would be low,  cowardly and despicable.”

He sat on the edge of the bed running his fingers through his hair. “I know you're right. It will kill me  seeing her bereft and broken.”
“Look Nick,” said Denise softly, kneeling behind him on the bed, resting her head on his shoulders. “If you  need more time I understand.”
“More time won't make it any easier, what's the point in putting it off? The sooner we all have to confront the reality of the situation, the sooner we'll all come to terms with it and start dealing with it.”

“We have to think about where we're going to live, my apartment will soon get claustrophobic.”
“Ah well,” beamed Nicky with satisfaction, “I saved the property guide from the paper yesterday. It's in the side of my case.”
“Did you plan this? I mean telling Rachel when we got back?”
He glanced at her sheepishly. “I had intended to broach the subject with you, yes. Living a lie is driving me mad. I get so frustrated when I can't be with you.”

“Oh honey, being a couple isn't going to alter the fact that we won't be together all the time.”
“I'm acutely aware of that,” he groaned, “but I've been sleeping with Rachel and having sex with her when it's you that I want to be with. A huge weight will be lifted off my shoulders when I come clean. No more lies and deceit, no more pretending.”
“What about the kick back from Sean and James? Worse still, your parents will go ballistic. I don't think they like me as it is, when they discover that I'm the bitch you've left Rachel for, they'll hate me with a vengeance.”

Nicky knelt on the floor, holding her hands in his own. “My parents do like you. They're concerned about how I am with you. They've asked me a few times if I'm having an affair with you. Despite my denials they remain suspicious.”
“With good reason.”
“They'll be upset that I've lied to them.”
“Do you want me to be with you when you tell them?”
“Why put yourself through that?”
“Because we're in this together. If they are going to criticise me it may as well be to my face.”
He gave her a wry smile. “You're gutsy, I'll give you that.”

“Guts has nothing to do with it. Your parents deserve some honesty no matter how unpalatable.”
“You call it being honest, I call it being gutsy.”
Denise glanced at the clock. “I'm going to my room to call Martin.”
“Don't be long!” he quickly kissed her inviting lips.
“Call Rachel,” said Denise. “I'll be back soon, get the bed warm for me.”

Nicky found the interviews arduous and mind numbing. Denise had to have a word with him a couple of times warning him to watch his attitude. It was obvious that he was bored with constantly answering the same questions.

“I'm pleased all of those stupid interviews and photo shoots are out of the way,” announced Nicky when they set off on the journey home. “Now I'm fretting about telling Rachel and my parents.”
“I wish there was something I could say to help but there isn't.”
“I know, the sooner I do it the better. She was so excited when I told her we were setting off. When I get home she'll want to kill me.”
“Do you still want me to wait for you?”
“No, you go back to yours with my things and I'll call you when I'm ready to be picked up.”

“Ok. I'll make some room for your stuff while I wait.”
“Then we'll go straight to your parents. Strike while the iron is hot and all that tosh.”
“Just remember Nick, I love you.”
He smiled softly to her, it was her love and support that was giving him the strength he needed.

“Good luck,” said Denise, parking the car on his drive. “Though I'm not sure that that is a particularly appropriate sentiment given the circumstances.”
“I don't know how long I'll be. How the hell do I say what I have to say tactfully?”
“You can't Nick. All you can do is be honest.”
“I hate knowing that I'm going to rip her life to pieces. You'd better go, I'll call you.”

With a heavy heart Denise watched him nervously walk into his home and close the door.

“Nicky!” trilled Rachel happily.
“Rache, can we sit down? I need to tell you something.”
“Oh, are you going away again?”
“Let's go through to the lounge.”

Nervously Rachel sat down, trying to analyze Nicky's behaviour. His body language scared her. Where had been the customary hug and kiss upon his return? Then she realised that he hadn't brought his luggage in with him. Surely he wasn't being expected to go away again so soon?

“Nick are you leaving again to do more interviews?”
Forlornly Nicky looked at his wife. This was more difficult than he had anticipated. The sadness and confusion radiating from her was heartbreaking. In agitation and discomfort at the task he faced, Nicky started pulling at his hair, strands of it clearly being pulled out and falling on to the plush carpet.
“Nick you're worrying me.”

“Rache, there is no easy way of telling you this. I can't dress it up with flowery speech to stop your anger and pain.”
Rachel felt her blood running cold through her veins. Uncomfortable fluttering sensations overwhelmed her. This was going to be major shit. “Oh God.”
“I'm moving out Rache. I've been having a relationship with Denise for eight months. We've fallen in love.”
“You've been sleeping with her?”
Unable to face Rachel, Nicky bowed his head, all to aware that seeing her pain and distress would prevent him from talking. “Yes. I'm moving in with her and we're looking for a home together.”
“A home? You have a home here!” she screamed, tears of anger spilling from her eyes. “And a wife! You always promised me that you would never waiver from your wedding vows. How many times did you tell me they were sacrosanct? So much for the breaking of the vows being sacrilegious. What a hypocrite you
are!”

The first he knew of the slap was the sting radiating over his cheek.

“You stare at the floor you two faced bastard! You do right to be ashamed. What the fuck do you see in her?”
“I'm not discussing it. I wanted to be honest with you, you deserve that much. It's a cliché but it's nothing to do with you. Denise has worked with us for years, you know that. All of that time there has been an  attraction there from my side, she never gave any indication that it was anything more than a professional relationship.”
“You want a medal?”
Nicky gritted his teeth, took a deep breath and continued. “Do you remember when we got stranded in Scotland? Well me and Denise had a real heart to heart. I told her how I felt about her but she was adamant that she wouldn't have a relationship with me.”

“So what changed?”
“For almost seven months, nothing. I spoke to her about it a lot. She'd been candid about wanting to be with me but said it wasn't appropriate. When I did get her to agree to go out with me it was for a meal as friends, nothing more.”
“My, my, how virtuous and restrained of you!”
“Look Rache, I understand that you're angry, and you have every reason to be. I have no excuses.”
“Something must have been wrong with our marriage if you had to go elsewhere.”

“I didn't go looking. From the day I met her, I was enamored. Over time that deepened and I fell in love with her.”
“You allowed yourself to be weak and then got seduced by her. She knew that if she held out it would make you want her more.”
“Denise did not seduce me! For months we had occasional dinner dates and I didn't get more than a chaste kiss goodnight. This has developed very slowly. That's why I knew that this is the right thing for me to do.”

“I take it that you slept with her these last few days away?”
“Yes.”
“Did she make you do this?” asked Rachel. Despite the pain and humiliation she needed answers.
“No, it was my idea. Denise was more than happy to wait.”
Rachel gave a sarcastic snigger. “I'll bet she did! Happy to be your bit on the side but not keen on anything  more?”
“Stop being so bitchy! Have a go at me, I'm the one that's hurting you and turning your world upside down. It was my persistence that made her give in to her emotions.”

“If you walk out of that door to go to her, you walk out of my life. I'll divorce you on the grounds of your adultery and I'll name her. No one will want to know you when I've finished with you.”
“And what the fuck is that going to achieve? Sure you'll get your revenge but how many people will you piss off and alienate in the process?”
“We'll see shall we? I'll make damn certain that you regret this for the rest of your life.”
“You venomous bitch!”
“What did you expect? Did you think I would sit here and give you my blessing? Did you think I'd help you decorate your lovenest and insist on a house warming party?”

“Of course not, now you're being stupid! You won't change my mind though. This is the right thing for me  to do.”
“Get out of my sight Nick!”
He screwed up his face, the shrillness of her yells taking him by surprise. “I'll go and pack some things.”
“You do that.”

He took his mobile out from his pocket and called Denise. “Come and get me love, oh and bring some more cases with you.”
“I'm not having her in this house,” bellowed Rachel, confronting Nicky. “I think you've humiliated me enough for one day don't you?”
“She'll wait in the car.”
“Wait till I tell your parents.”
“We're going there next,” he said simply. He then walked back upstairs to pack.

When Denise arrived, Nicky had packed two more large cases and a large sports bag. He put them in the boot taking out the cases and bag that Denise had brought for him.

Silently Rachel fumed behind the net curtain, disgusted by Nicky's behaviour and infidelity. Of all people, she had never suspected that Nicky was capable of the treachery of an affair. How little she had known him. When she watched Nicky give Denise a hug Rachel felt the acidic bile rising, the sharp bitter taste tainting
her mouth.

Half an hour later all of Nicky's baggage was in the car, with trepidation Nicky went back into the house.
“What about your other stuff?” Rachel asked with her back to him.
“I'll arrange for most of it to go into storage until we get a place to live, Denise's apartment is too small. I'll be back in a day or so for some more c.d's, dvd's and other odds and sods. I'll ring first and check it's ok.”
“You do that, and don't bring her. I never want to see her again.”
“I'll see what I can arrange.”
“If she comes I won't let you in and I'll burn or giveaway the rest of your prized possessions.”

“Fine,” he muttered through gritted teeth. “Like I said, I'll make arrangements.” He fished about in his pockets. “Oh, here you are, the house keys. I don't need them, it's your house now.”
Rachel bit her lip, she still loved him. Taking hold of the keys, she took a deep breath. “Please stay Nicky,” she whispered.
“Rachel I can't. It wouldn't be fair to you, I'm in love with Denise and she's the one I want to be with. I'm sorry.”
“So am I. Twelve years of marriage ends like this huh? Please just leave me alone.”

Denise saw Nicky leave the house, he seemed like a broken man. After settling in the car and fastening his belt, Denise carefully drove away, aware that Rachel was watching.

“Do you want to go straight to your parents' home or shall I park up for a while?”
“We'd better go straight there. Rachel says that she's going to call them.”
“Do you think that she will?”
“With the mood she's in, she's capable of anything,” he sighed dejectedly. “I erm, I need to organise someone to take me for the rest of my stuff. If you go near the house she'll burn or get rid of my things.”
“Perhaps Martin will help, he has that van and the storage facility. That way you'd know everything was safe.”
“I'll ask him but he may prefer not to get involved.”

“Would it help you to talk?”
“There isn't much to say. It went pretty much as I anticipated.”
“Did she agree to the divorce?”
Nicky tittered. “She suggested it. She's going to divorce me on the grounds of adultery and naming you as the co-respondent.”
“Not a huge surprise. Are you ok with that?”
“It's the truth.”
“That wasn't what I asked.”

“To be honest Den I don't have a fucking clue what I think right now. Giving her the keys, walking out on her, on our marriage, fuck, my mind is all over the place.”
A chill of trepidation ran through Denise. “Are you regretting this?”
“Regret isn't the word I'd choose,” aid Nicky quietly. “I'm reflecting on things that's all.”
“Does that reflection involve your sadness at leaving her and your confusion at starting a life with me?”
Sheepishly he glanced across at her, aware of the tears forming in her eyes. “Yes, after twelve years of marriage and twenty years of being with her, I think I'm entitled.”

“Do you want to be with me Nick?”
“Truth be told, yes, I do. It's scary because Rachel and I knew each other so well where as we're still learning.”
“But you want to learn?”
“I wouldn't have gone through all that if I didn't. If I had any doubts at all I would have stayed with Rachel.”
“So long as you're sure.”
“Honey, I've never been more certain of anything. That house is full of memories for me, that's all”
“Sorry, I didn't intend to be insensitive.”
“Hey don't worry. You weren't being insensitive, it's understandable that you'd be worried I changed my  mind.”

“Ah well,” sighed Nicky getting out of the car, “ the curtains haven't twitched so I guess Rachel didn't call
them.”
When Nicky offered her his hand, Denise gladly held it, nervously they walked up to the door. Nicky knocked once and walked in, calling out for his parents.

“Nicky! Oh this is a lovely coincidence,” smiled Irene, hugging him warmly. “We were just talking about you. Hello Denise, sit down then you two, I'll go and make some tea.”
“Perhaps later,” suggested Nicky sitting on the sofa next to Denise.
“What's wrong son?” asked Allen with great concern on noticing how subdued his son was.
Nicky took a deep breath. “I've left Rachel. We're getting divorced.”

“What?” Irene was totally shocked. “This isn't happening. What ever is wrong you can work out.”
“What's happened Nick?”
“I'm moving in with Denise. I love her.”
Irene started sobbing. “You swore that you weren't having an affair Nick! You promised us!”
Allen comforted her then turned on Denise. “I thought more of you than this Denise,” Allen bellowed angrily. “I never envisioned you as a home wrecker!”
“I'm not.”

“Is that why my son is ruining his life?”
“Stop this!” yelled Nicky. “I pursued
HER! I have wanted her since the day I saw her but this has only been going on for a eight months.”
“She should have said no.”
“Mr Jones, Mrs Jones, I understand your anger but this is not a quick fling, I love your son. I have fought this for a long time.”
“And you ought to have continued to fight it. He's married.”

“I have no excuses, you're right. I ought never to have gotten involved with him,” Denise said with honesty. “But it's not so easy when you really love someone. Especially when they love you back.”
“Get out, both of you!” cried Irene.
“Mum please...”
“You'd better do as your mother wants. We need time to digest this.”
Nicky and Denise stood up.

“I haven't done this lightly,” said Nicky. “Like it or not Denise is my partner.”
Unable to speak, Irene waved them away.
“I'll leave Denise's number in the kitchen. Call me when you're ready to talk.”

When he closed the door to his parents home Nicky began sobbing. Denise comforted him, but when he felt her arms around him, his sobs deepened.
“Come on love, let's get you home.”
