SOONER OR LATER by Janey <<< Part 4 PART 5 “Thanks Martin. Yeah no problem, ok bye.” “So?” Dina asked cuddling back up to Nicky on the huge sofa in the study when he had put the phone back in the cradle, “what’s happening then?” “Martin’s rung Graham up and read him the riot act but is pretending that he’s abroad on business,” he paused as Dina quizzically stared at him, “all will become clear; stop being so impatient! Basically he’s told him that we will be going in tomorrow lunchtime with you to discuss a contract; Graham is cancelling his other plans so he can be there and Martin will arrive sometime after us.” “So far this is not terribly reassuring, I hate to say.” “Pessimist!” he sniggered, giving her a sweet impish kiss on the tip of her nose. “Martin wants us to start in your office, then as Graham gets involved we decamp to his; Martin turns up and insists we stay where we are and takes Graham to Sara’s office; stop looking at me like that and listen! When Graham’s out of the way, Seany does his stuff with the microphone and camera thingy.” “Ok, who is Sara and who is going to monitor his office, you know listen and watch the footage?” “Turns out that Sara is an undercover policewoman, they’ve been after Graham for ages compiling a dossier on his drug dealing activities but they haven’t actually been able to catch him touching or taking the stuff. It was only when she got there that she heard women complaining about his attitude and wandering hands, unfortunately she had no reason to spend a lot of time with him but she had struck up a friendship with his secretary Moira. Oh it’s too complicated! Basically, Martin went to the police; they have someone there and we’re officially helping them.” “You should have said that in the first bloody place!” Dina teased, pinching one of his nipples a little. “Women! You always want everything there and then.” “I don’t know how you dare say that. I’ve been very patient,” she sighed snuggling back under the quilt with him. “The things I’ve been through because of you Wire! Not many women would come around in the middle of the bloody night and clear your vomit up you know.” As soon as she had said it, Dina wrinkled her face up and cringed. “I knew you came!” he gushed lifting her chin up so that she could see his broad genuine smile. “Why did you go?” “Oh Nicky…” “Please, I need to know. I have a patchy recollection of it and I don’t know for certain what happened and what I’ve dreamt.” He touched her lips with his own, and gently caressed her cheeks with his giant but tender hands. “No secrets; no lies; no half truths. Let’s start as we mean to go on.” He was so sensitive; she sighed and the corner of her lips curled into a soft smile. “You called me,” she started. “Obviously blotto but I was worried; I heard you retching and you know how pathetic you are when you’re ill.” She gazed at him wryly and he shrugged his shoulders and nodded. “So, I got here and you could barely stay on your feet and you were so sick. I managed to get you washed and into bed then cleaned up after you, put your clothes in the wash.” With some chagrin Nicky muttered, “oh hell. I’m so sorry.” “Don’t worry,” Dina said, once more laying her head on his chest, loving the comforting rising and falling from his breathing. “After I had a shower and got into bed with you. I tried telling myself it was to make sure you didn’t choke but equally I wanted to be close to you; the man I loved was hurting.” “Dina,” he sighed, “I’ve put you through so much turmoil and pain.” “Neither of us has exactly been mature over this have we?” “I’ve been the worst though.” “Shush!” Dina silenced him with a kiss. “So, what made you leave? I think I touched you…was it that?” “No, no it wasn’t. That was an unexpected surprise and I loved it; it was later, when we were going back over to sleep. You called me Rachel: twice. It freaked me and I had to go. I felt like I’d betrayed my friend and that you were still in love with her. I can understand a little better why you ran out on me now. It’s the strangest thing; disconcerting and confusing.” Nicky moved around so that he was lying on top of her, stroking her face and planting tiny little kisses over her forehead, neck and shoulders. “I love you and I never want to hurt you Dina.” “You won’t! If we had discussed how we both felt it probably wouldn’t have happened in the first place, but we were too busy flirting and being silly. Then when we do finally come to our senses and decide to do something about it, we make a balls up of it and it goes from bad to worse. I think back to when you brought me those flowers and I must have scared you witless coming on to you like that.” “It wasn’t you that frightened me Dina; it was me. Somehow when we were flirting it was kinda safe but then we were putting our cards on the table and I started worrying about all sorts of stupid stuff instead of going with the flow and seeing where it took us. If I’d stayed and we’d talked things could have been so different, you wouldn’t have ended up quitting your job.” Dina stroked his chest with her fingertips, circling around his nipples absentmindedly. “We don’t know that Nick. Maybe we had to go through some tough times to make us both value what we have because this is pretty darned special and as frustrating and annoying as it’s been, I’m kinda pleased we had to work for it.” She raised her head and winked at him lasciviously. “As this is bedroom talk I expect this to stay with us because I will never be this soppy in public with you, never ever ever!” she giggled coquettishly. “Promise it stays right here; all of it,” he drawled, leaning forward and sucking on her neck until she managed to move out of the way, flashing him an angry glare. “What?” “Very professional!” she shrieked with raucous laughter. “Although it may impress Graham if I turn up tomorrow with evidence of some sort of nocturnal activity.” “You were going to tell me something before you diverted my attention; what was it?” His mouth went back to nuzzling and sucking on the soft pale skin of her neck, and she couldn’t help but moan and slide into his body. “You’ll laugh.” “I won’t,” he mumbled. “Tell.” “I often went to sleep holding my pillow, pretending it was you, and…” she let out a nervous giggle, “and I had some very raunchy dreams about you. Very vivid raunchy dreams, if you erm, understand me.” “Comfy as this sofa is,” murmured Nicky, “I think it’s time we took this upstairs and then you can cuddle the real thing to sleep rather than a pillow.” Gently he slipped off the sofa and helped her to her feet, holding her naked body tightly against him. “You should have told me that you have an insatiable sexual appetite Wire,” Dina giggled. “Complaining?” “Not in the least.” He smiled sweetly at her his face lit up with love. “So do I carry you or the quilt upstairs?” “Why don’t I take this up while you bring us some wine? I quite like the idea of having a glass of wine in bed before we call it a night.” “Who-said-any-thing-about-calling-it-a-night?” he asked softly in between sensuously licking and nibbling the soft plumpness of her breasts. The next morning after having a cup of tea Dina drove Nicky to a nearby lingerie shop with instructions as to what type and size of briefs she needed. No way would she survive without the security of underwear; she would be far too self-conscious sitting in front of them without her knickers with the short skirt that she would be wearing. On their return Nicky had confirmed times with Martin. Dina and Nicky would now be the first to get there followed after approximately 15 minutes by Sean and James, thus giving them time to show their affection off to Graham and relax him. For everything to succeed Graham had to be utterly unaware of the set up, any suspicions and they would be compromising the police investigation. “I am so nervous,” said Dina switching off the car’s engine once she had parked in front of the offices. “Well you’re coming across as very professional and accomplished so don’t worry; you’ll be fine,” he smiled leaning his body in to hers and then seductively whispering, “shame you insisted on the knickers though.” “Don’t you ever think about anything else? I can’t believe that you weren’t complaining of being tired this morning.” “Why?” “Well how many times did we have sex yesterday? Then you woke me up during the night to make love, we made love this morning when we woke up and again before we got ready to come here; I’m impressed.” “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” Nicky smirked devilishly, stroking her knees and slipping a hand beneath her short skirt. “Perhaps we can have some fun over the desk in your office.” “If I could be certain that twat wouldn’t walk in I have to say, I’d consider it. I’ve always fancied doing it in my office.” “That’s it!” cried Nicky jovially reaching for the car door. “Out of the car before I develop such a big hard-on I can’t move.” When she had taken her bag and briefcase out of the boot, she winked at him. “I hope this works.” “It will,” he said simply walking to her and then taking her in his arms. “Deep breath and remember, we’re in this together; he can’t hurt you anymore.” Walking to her office hand in hand, they had made sure that they had plenty of attention, knowing full well that word would get back to her sleazy boss and he would find it nigh on impossible to stay away from he office. “It’s so weird seeing you working here,” said Nick, “I still expect to bump in to you whenever I go to Hall or Nothing. I ought to be used to it by now.” “You don’t have to get used to it, I’ll be back there soon enough although I don’t know if I’ll be allowed to work as closely with you guys now. Our being involved may detract from my objectivity.” “Sorry to interrupt,” whispered a timid voice from behind them. “I was wondering if you would give me a reference, I’m applying for some other jobs.” “Of course I will Carla, why do you want to leave?” “It’s Mr Perkins, I can’t put up with his lurid suggestions and wandering hands anymore. It’s affecting my relationship with my boyfriend.” “Carla I’m so sorry, you should have come to me, I would have helped you, but lets not worry about that now, come and sit down.” Dina got up from the chair and locked her office door after putting the ‘busy’ sign up, and then sat down next to Nicky on the desk, holding his hand. Nicky smiled at Carla who was evidently nervous and worried. “Don’t worry, I don’t bite,” he quipped, breaking the ice and making her giggle. “Where are my manners? Carla this is Nicky, Nicky this is Carla my wonderful secretary.” They shook hands and Nicky then placed an arm around Dina’s shoulder when he sat back next to her. “How do you feel about doing a swap with another secretary for a few days? I can’t go into details but it would be short term and it hopefully will mean that you’ll stay in your job here.” “Erm, I don’t know.” “It’s not a demotion but I’m not sure if I can tell you anymore than that really.” “I know that you have no reason to trust me,” said Nicky sincerely, “but it will all work out for the best.” They chatted with Carla for about five minutes and then Dina invited Sara to join them and she elaborated on the situation. Carla agreed to spend the rest of the day with Dina but that after she would change over with Sara. Sara then took Carla over to her workstation to familiarise her with a few things. Deliberately Dina ensured that her office door was left slightly ajar, knowing that Graham would be unable to resist having a crafty peek inside to see what she was getting up to with Nicky. Dina glanced nervously at her watch; James and Sean were late. “Relax,” Nicky sighed holding her tightly to his body. “They’ll be here.” He then captured her protests in a deep kiss, Dina snaking her arms around his neck, fingertips playing with his hair. Graham smiled as he watched the pair of them kissing and canoodling; she certainly had taken his advice to heart, he smirked leaving them to it for a while longer. “Well, well, well,” sniggered James barging into her office and interrupting them. “I see that you have ironed out your differences!” He trotted over to her, edged Nick playfully out of the way and gave Dina a huge hug and a big kiss on her cheek. “Damn girl it’s good to see you!” “You too! Just don’t crush me James!” “Oops, sorry, got a bit carried away there!” Nicky shut the office door behind them. “I noticed,” he said dryly. “Getting jealous and possessive Wire?” Sean asked giving Dina a more restrained hug. “You’ll have to learn that a beautiful creature like Dina warrants masses of attention and therefore you’ll have to get used to it.” “Jealous of you two? Nah! I know she has more taste than that.” “That’s debatable, after all she’s with you!” shrieked James. “Do you think you could not talk about me as though I were not here?” Dina mused. “Right then, let’s get this charade into full swing shall we?” Sean put his very large briefcase down on the floor as they sat around the large table at the far-left side of Dina’s office. “Help yourself to drinks as you want them and NO SMOKING BRADFIELD!” she stared at James who merely pulled a funny face and then stuck his tongue out at her, Dina smirked in response then carried on. “I haven’t started drawing anything up yet because I was kinda busy last night.” “I can hazard a guess who with,” Sean tittered, elbowing James knowingly, James nodding in agreement. Dina tried her hardest to ignore them, smiled and carried on, writing as she spoke. “If I remember rightly these are the main features of your current contract, so obviously you would need to be offered something more acceptable but without compromising your ethics.” “Excuse me for interrupting Dina but I couldn’t neglect our possible newcomers.” Graham stormed in and introduced himself individually to them, winking at Dina when he noticed the bruise on the side of her neck. “Good girl,” he whispered to her, “I knew you could do it if you had to.” “Why don’t we transfer to your office? It would make more sense to discuss this there.” “Good idea Dina.” Reluctantly they all traipsed into his office, Nicky with a face like thunder. It was so obvious that he detested the man he was now having to spend some time with and all the others could do was hope that he could hold it together and not blow a gasket. Thankfully the guys all played their roles with perfection and Graham was completely hoodwinked by them, enabling Dina to relax into it somewhat. Graham had all but taken over the negotiating but that was no bad thing as far as Dina was concerned. Martin arrived right on cue and was spitting feathers and red faced with rage. “And you!” he spat venomously at Dina, “I trusted you and thought you were my friend and THIS is how you repay me?” “Martin this isn’t personal; it’s business. You know how this business works, besides which, they’re here because they’re interested so don’t put all the blame at my door because it doesn’t belong there!” “Martin cool down,” interjected Graham snidely. “It’s common practise; you know that.” “What I know,” explained Martin deliberately and pointedly, “is that a group of people I have known for years have not even had the decency or balls to discuss this with me upfront! Instead I get to hear about it from the rumour mill. That is abhorrent, unethical behaviour and it sickens me.” “It’s their right to explore other opportunities.” “Perhaps we can take this elsewhere Graham?” “Of course.” He stood up from his chair, swayed a little before steadying, opened the door and then followed Martin out, leaving Dina to carry on negotiations. As soon as they stepped out of the door Sean began taking some gadgets out of his briefcase assembling them in Graham’s computer mouse, telephone, light switches and other places so that each angle and corner of the office was covered by camera’s. The three microphones ensured that they would be able to pick up everything. Once he was satisfied everything was hooked up he made a call on his mobile; yes they had visual and audio contact: So far so good. It was almost an hour later when Martin and Graham returned. The atmosphere between them was still incredible fraught. “I’ve agreed to give Martin 24 hours to talk with you before you renegotiate your contract,” Graham sighed. “It seemed the honourable thing to do in the circumstances.” Dina stifled the giggle and glare of satisfaction from him. What he actually meant was that Martin had threatened to hit him with lawsuits and to sully his and his firm’s reputation, if Graham didn’t play ball. It was so good to see him squirming so uncomfortably. Talk about sweet. They bade goodbye to the guys, Dina deliberately making a point of kissing Nicky and holding his hand firmly until he left with the others. “A word; NOW!” ‘Oh happy days!’ thought Dina, inhaling sharply and following him. Graham slammed the door shut behind them, and Dina flinched from the noise. “You make sure that they sign for me or your reputation will be so sullied a sewer would be cleaner.” “I’m doing all I can.” He wrinkled his nose up and squinted at her; “Umm, I hope so.” “What more do you want? I’ve upset my friend, possibly completely ruined and lost that friendship forever over this so DO NOT say I haven’t done enough. Despite the fact that it was very short notice they came here for negotiations so if this doesn’t work out it won’t be my fault.” Dina gave him a saccharine grin, tilted her head with sarcasm and walked out of his office, ignoring his pleas for her to return. Dina had spent the rest of the afternoon with Carla, drawing up fake new contracts for the Manics and making arrangements with Nicky for when they would next see each other again. That night Nicky had Clara staying over so they agreed for Dina to call round for a cup of tea when she left the office so that Clara could get used to seeing her with her dad. “Hey, come on in sweetheart,” said Nicky with a big genuine smile. “Madam is playing in the lounge, go through.” Dina walked through and stood at the door watching Clara who was lost in her own little world of fantasy. “Hi there beautiful,” she smiled warmly and then moving across to the sofa. “That looks like good fun.” “Dina!” shouted Clara getting up from her colouring and teddies, running to Dina and stretching to give her a big hug. “Wow! What a welcome,” she said with genuine delight, picking the youngster up. “Are you staying tonight?” “No sweetheart, I’ve stopped by to see you and your daddy before I go home.” Nicky entered the lounge with two cups of tea and some hot chocolate for Clara. “Time for you to go to bed when you’ve had this gorgeous.” “Oh daddy.” “Never mind looking at me with those big sad eyes, it’s getting late. Come on sit down and have your drinking chocolate and remember to blow on it first.” Nicky winked at Dina as she put Clara down and she sat with her legs under the coffee table, on the opposite side to the sofa. “Here you are gorgeous.” “Thank you daddy.” The three of them exchanged smirks as they watched one another for a while, Dina giggling at the way Clara licked her lips each time she took a sip of the drink. “How was the rest of the day for you then?” asked Nicky. “Not as bad as it could have been which is something. I was glad to leave though.” “Shame I couldn’t find an excuse so that I could stick around.” “Thanks but I was ok. I’m relieved now that I know something is being done, and I’m only staying so that he doesn’t get suspicious. If he gets too obnoxious I know that I can leave and that is very empowering.” “Let’s hope he soon slips up and the police get the evidence they need.” Clara watched in total fascination at the interaction between her dad and Dina. Deliberately they weren’t sitting close together not were they touching; Nicky just wanted Clara to get used to seeing Dina at his home when she was there. “Time for me to get home and let you get to bed young lady!” smiled Dina standing up from the sofa. “Be a good girl for your dad and sleep well Clara.” “I will,” she beamed accepting a kiss on her cheek with a big smile. “Nighty night.” “Night sweetheart.” “You finish your drink and I’ll be back in a minute,” winked Nicky to Clara who pulled a funny face at him. “So, will I get to see you tomorrow night?” Nicky queried, embracing her tenderly. “Only if you’re very good.” “I’m always good!” he protested. “Umm. Why don’t I call you when I leave and you can stay the night at mine?” “That sounds really good to me.” “Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow night then, night Nick.” Dina gave him a chaste kiss on his cheek and then ambled back to her car. “Night Dina.” Nicky looked down at his side as he felt something touch him, and Clara was waving goodbye to Dina. “Come on sweetheart, time for you to go to bed now.” “Aww daddy.” “Never mind that you little monster, bed, now!” Clara laughed out loud and started up the stairs taunting Nicky to ‘come catch me’.
