PART 1

“Nice coat Sophie,” called Richey, putting his guitar down.  “I was thinking of getting one like that but I don’t think I’d look as good in it as you do.”
“Why, thank you kind sir!” she said with a flourish, winking at him as she twirled around.
“I hope you don’t fancy your chances with my lady,” declared James, putting a protective arm around her shoulder, even though he was smiling.
“No way!  I like living too much, thank you very much!”  Richey rolled his eyes, laughed and then went back to his guitar, enjoying a private joke with Nicky on the way.

“He’s right though,” whispered James sensually, kissing and nuzzling beneath her right earlobe.  “Fake fur certainly does suit you.”
“You should see what else I bought,” she giggled dangerously.  “I don’t think I’ll be wearing it for long.”  She winked at him and stroked his face, her simple actions enough to convey her meaning.
“I wish I could go home with you right now but we have so much to get through, it’ll probably be the early hours when I get in.”  His eyes heavy with disappointment he kissed her nose.  “So don’t wait up for me.”

“James, that’s two nights running you’ll have been so late.”
“I know but that’s the way it goes sometimes.  Look, Sean has to go out to the dentist or somewhere and we don’t need him for a while so why don’t I ask him to drop you at home?  It will save you waiting for a taxi.”
“Trying to get rid of me?” she teased, her long brunette hair swishing as she twisted her head slightly.
“Not at all but hanging around here is boring at the best of time sweetheart,” he said placating her.  He then called Sean over who agreed to take Sophie home if they left straight away because he didn’t want to be late for his appointment.

“How long before you have to be back?” she asked Sean as he drove her.
“A few hours,” he smiled.
“We’d better make the most of it then.”
“Yes,” he beamed, “we had!”

Sophie snuggled in to Sean, both of them needing to recover after the frantic sex they had both enjoyed.
“It’s a shame you can’t come round later,” she sighed.  “James said it could well be the early hours when he gets back.”
“I need to be home for Rhian in case she does come back tonight or calls me.  She’ll be suspicious if I’m not in.”
“I wish we could spend more time together.”
“So do I sweetheart,” he drawled.  “Especially as I know that I’ll be leaving much, much earlier than James.”
“Why don’t you work as late as he does?”  Sophie was intrigued as to why James stayed so late.
“He’s the main producer; me and Nick just go in and help him polish it all up but he has all the ideas really so it makes sense for him to do it.”

“You do know he’s expecting you home don’t you?” muttered James into his mobile after making the excuse that he needed a cigarette.  “I’ll still be there don’t worry but you should ring him and talk to him, if you don’t he’ll ring and disturb us.”
“I know,” moaned the soft voice into his ear.  “I’m getting reckless.”
“We both are.  If we’re not careful he’ll suspect something is going on.”
“Good!”
“Rhian!  Think what you’re saying.”

“I am!  You want to be with me and I want to be with you but we won’t do anything about it because you won’t upset your fucking cousin!”
“That’s only a part of it Rhian you know that!” he barked angrily.  “If you’re not happy we can just call it a day and go back to our mundane but stable relationships.  It’s up to you.”
“James!” she pleaded.  “I can’t give you up; I love you.”

He sighed heavily.  “I love you too darling but all I’m saying is that this is more fucking complicated than some of the thrillers and what have you that I’ve read.  This has so many repercussions it’s untrue, we have to be careful, very careful or not only do I lose the band, but I also lose my family.”
Rhian looked suitably ashamed, though obviously James couldn’t see that.  “I know, I’m sorry.  I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah you will,” James giggled.  “Call him ok?”
“I will.”

Sophie kissed Sean deeply, stroking his arse with her fingers.  “Bye sugar.”
“Maybe one of these days it won’t burn to hear those words like it does now, because one day I’ll know that I’ll be coming home to you.”
She sighed and nuzzled against his neck.  “We can but hope but I won’t hold my breath.  I know what we’d be putting on the line, you especially Sean; you risk so much.”
“You’re worth it though Sophie, there has to be a way that we can have a life together without everything going for a Burton.”
“We can only hope darling.”

Sophie got angry and decided it was time to pay James a visit at the studio no matter how inconvenient it may be: a girl could only wait so long.  The studio was in darkness.

“Is Rhian with you?”
“No baby why?”
“I’m at the studio and James isn’t here.”
“And that makes you think…” Sean laughed.  “Oh baby calm down. There’ll be a reasonable explanation.”
“Reasonable or right?” she asked.  “Call her Sean and let’s find out shall we?  Actually call her in ten minutes when I ring you again.  I think I know where they are.”
“Well Rhian did tell me to call her on her mobile and not at her parents ‘cos she didn’t want to worry them.”
“Great!  She’s told you that her sister is poorly and not to contact her there; James has told me to call him by his mobile only too.”

Sean laughed madly.  “I should be mad but it would make things easier wouldn’t it?
“Much, but they shouldn’t know that Sean.”
“Why not?  As far as I can see it, if we screw for a divorce settlement, then they’ll do the same, so we gain nothing.”
“We do if we don’t let them know.  Come on Sean!  We have a chance of catching them at it and we can then say that we got close afterwards.”
“Will it work?”  Sean was worried.
“Who’s to say any different?”
“OK.  I’ll call her.   Hang up and in twenty seconds I’ll dial her and you dial James.”
“Ok.  I love you Sean.”
“Love you too baby.”

Count to 20!

“James”

“Rhian”

“Hello darling.”

“Hello darling.”

“You’re with Rhian aren’t you?”

“You’re with James aren’t you?”

James and Rhian look at each other.

“How dare you?”  They ask.
“Well you sure as hell ain’t where you’re supposed to be!”  Sean and Sophie said together. Rhian and James almost choked.

“Erm yeah well, it just, kinda like, ya know…”
James hung up to Sophie but Rhian was still speaking with Sean.

“Rhian don’t even try to argue the point!” Sean screamed.  “I don’t believe you.  How dare you?”
“I won’t; I love James and I always wanted to fuck him and be with him; I’m sorry I hurt you.”

James grabs the phone. “Seany!  Don’t take any notice!”
“’Cos it’s a fucking lie right cous?  I don’t believe you”
“Come on Seany!  Course you do cous!”
“I’d have more respect for you if you just told me the truth James.  No recriminations, be honest now!”
“Well I never wanted you to find out like this Sean.”
“Oh I’m sure that you didn’t, but right now I don’t want to see or speak to either of you!  Now go away, and before you ask, I’ve texted Sophie, so you better make your excuses very quickly.  Bye James.”

James hurriedly issued a text but before he sent it he received one saying; “ I know the truth.  Thanks for being so honest and stopping me from being humiliated.”

To say he blushed was an understatement. “ I’m sorry.  I should have known better. I will do and say whatever it takes to stop you being seen as a gimp,” he texted back.

“A gimp is nothing” she replied,  “you are such a cataclysmic twat that no one will believe you.  To call YOU a gimp is so generous that it beggars belief, so go and fuck yourself!”

“Baby, he knows and so it’s up to us now.”

“Rhian, what the fuck have you done?”
“Nothing!”
“You could have denied it and we could have bluffed our way out of this, but no, you had to go right in there and hold your hands up, didn’t you?”
“I don’t see what the problem is, we love each other and now we can be together can’t we?  No more hiding.”
James laughed insidiously. “You don’t get it do you?  I don’t love you Rhian, never have and never will.”
“But, but…” she spluttered.
“You’re a good fuck and you’ll do stuff that Sophie won’t but that’s it; I don’t love you, I don’t want to be with you, ok?  Get dressed and fuck off!”
“James!” she spat indignantly, her arse hitting the floor as he tipped her out of bed.  “May I remind you that you came to me!”

James shuddered as he stood in front of his home; lights still on, he knew that Sophie was waiting for him and he had no excuses, he’d been caught red handed.

“So are you gonna beat me up, walk out on me, divorce me?” he shouted as soon as he’d stepped inside the house.
“Divorce you.”
“She means nothing, it was sex and nothing else.”
“I couldn’t give a flying fuck!  Your cousin’s wife of all people!  Did you really think that you wouldn’t get found out?  I’ve had Sean here in one hell of a state!”

James bit his lip and wrung his hands together.  “I know I fucked up and I can’t make it up to Sean but that’s no reason why we can’t try again Sophie; I love you!”
“If you loved me you wouldn’t have fucking cheated on me!”

They had a real humdinger of an argument, so did Rhian and Sean; Rhian stating that she loved James and was convinced he felt the same but now knew that he didn’t.  Sophie never let on for a second that she and Sean had a relationship.

James and Rhian both arranged for private detectives to follow Sophie and Sean, and also to monitor their phone conversations, after three months the decree nisi went through and neither James or Sophie had any indication of wrong doing.  The guys being in the studio explained the phone calls or doing interviews and their appearances together was always as part of the band.

Sean and Sophie both stayed with their partners, although they slept in separate rooms, for publicity’s sake.  James ached so much, he loved Sophie; his dick had got in the way of his real feelings and he’d wanted more and more sex.  Trouble was, the sex he had with Rhian wasn’t enough.  Yes, it filled a physical void but it didn’t fill an emotional void because there wasn’t one.  Sophie was his one and only love and he had lost her because of a need to shag.

Sophie and Sean pined; being separated was hell on earth.  Rhian hated James because she’d ruined her life for nothing and had been convinced that he loved her, but evidently James just wanted sex.

Sophie and Sean spoke only when the band was together or when they had to answer the phone and it was hell!

“Fuck Sophie, I don’t know how much longer I can manage this,” whispered Sean angrily.
“Be patient sexy; not much longer now.  We can start talking and seeing each other soon.  They’ll see it as us comforting one another.”
“You wicked woman!” he grinned maniacally.
“If you want to back out say so Sean.  I understand if you do.”

“Oh James go to hell!” barked Sophie when James approached them.
“Fuck, I really hope you never get pissed off with me,” said Sean with as much levity as he could muster.  “That was harsh!”
“Hey, remember why I’m doing this: I wanna be with you ‘cos I love you.  If you don’t want the same Sean or if you think you’ll cheat on me then take a hike!”
“Hey baby! Shush now!  You know how much I love you.”
That was the first public kiss.

“I’m sorry.”
“What?” she had barely heard.
“I’m sorry that I hurt you.”
“Have you said that to Sean?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He said it was upto you if you took me back or not and of course he’s right.  He did say that if you did he would get along with me.”
“Sorry James, no.”
“That it?” he asked, bewildered.
“Yes.  Now leave me alone.”

“You bitch!” he bellowed.
“How dare you?”  She tried to say it stiffly but could not stifle the giggle.  “You conceited twat!”
“I’m begging you here for…”
“You are begging or asking for nothing so stop seeking pity!  It’s over James, if you still wanted me you wouldn’t have slept or had sex with someone else, call it what you will.”
“Rhian was sex, I love you!”
“So what could you do with Rhian that you couldn’t with me?”

Sean stood alongside her.
“Well James; What could you do with my ex-wife that you couldn’t with Sophie?” asked Sean innocently. “I think we both need to know that.”
James blushed and lied:  “Nothing.  Rhian was just more vocal.”

Sean took a step back and turned away from James, pretending to cough. “Oh right.”
“Sorry Sean but it’s the truth Sophie never urged me to make her cum or anything else like that.  She has trouble with vocalising her needs.”
Sean spluttered, the Sophie he knew was more than able to tell him what she wanted and when.  “Oh.”

“James I don’t want to get involved; you know we’ve got close since all this happened.”
“But you know Seany; You KNOW!”
“All I know is that it’s gone wrong James.  Sophie and I are getting close, that’s all I can say.”
“Are you fucking?”
“James!”
“Sorry,” he was suitably chagrined.
“I don’t know what will happen, but you’re not part of her life now James.  Just like I couldn’t say anything if you were with Rhian.”
“I’m not.”
“I know.  I merely said…”
“Yeah…”

Only after the decree absolute did they start to flagrantly see one another that said they didn’t sleep together.

“I’ve booked us a weekend away,” giggles Sean.  “We’re both divorced now so what’s the problem?”
“Nothing!” she laughed back.  “I’m sure James is waiting for me to go with someone; it just won’t be you!”
“No, I ought to tell him but he’ll ask too many questions.  It’s easier to say that we got together after what happened and that we didn’t want to say anything until we knew what was happening.”
“Will he accept that?”
“Not initially no, but I can persuade him.”
“We’d better talk about when and how so he doesn’t trip us up.”
“Emotions are allowed to confuse you.”

“Not with something like this Sean.  Are you telling me that you don’t recall the first time we made love?”  She was worried.
“Oh I remember all too well.  James was in the studio with Nick and Martin and I was running late because of an accident on the road.  I took a detour to your place; we talked and well….”
“Yes…”
“It wasn’t as if it was the first time.  It was only the first time that we did anything.”
“Hell but we did stuff!” she laughed.
“Shush!”

“You bitch!”
“How the fuck dare you!”
“Easily you bitch!  You have stiffed me!”
“Excuse me but you shagged another woman, namely Rhian, since then Sean and I have grown close, how can you argue with that?  You played around James.”
“I love you!  Rhian loves Sean.  Let’s put it behind us and carry on baby, please.”
“No James.  Move on.”
“I can’t.”
“You have to.”

“You can’t tell me that you love Sean more than me!” he spat.
“Equally.  I love him equally but for different reasons.”
“Please honey, give us another try.  I will never ever fail you again.  I realise what I have lost.”
“Too late James.  Much too late!  Sean and I are going away.”
“Fuck!”
“It’s over James.”
“The hell it is!”

James’ attitude seriously damaged the release of the next album, he refused to be seen with Sean whilst Sean and Sophie were still a couple, thus making the shooting of publicity shots difficult.  Thank goodness that computer graphics and imaging could help them get over the problem.

“Sean you are being too sensitive!  For two months every two years; ergo a month per year you have to prat around with a photographer, what is the problem?”
“What’s the problem?  It’s a bore!  We’ve done it I don’t know how many times!”
“Not with this fucking photographer you haven’t!”
“Stop being so fucking pedantic!”
“I’m not.”
“Yes you are!” he spat at James, knowing that they weren’t discussing the real reason for the friction.

Sophie walked up to Sean, stroked his cheek and smiled.  “Sean, sometimes you can be such a twat!”
“And that’s a problem because?”
“Did I say it was a problem?” she sniggered, kissing him on the tip of his nose, not caring that James was watching.
“Umm, I’m pleased about that.”
James huffed and slammed as much stuff down on the floor as he could lay his hands on.  The divorce had torn him more than he had thought possible.

“James,” Richey said hesitantly, “I know I’m not the best person to give relationship advice but if you want to get back with her then you’ve got to woo her all over again.  The journalists haven’t got hold of news of the divorce yet but it’s only a matter of time.  Fight for her James, stop being angry at everyone and start being bloody constructive.”
James stared at his friend and started to laugh.  “If you can be so sensible why don’t you have a lady in your life Rich?”
“Too much hassle mate,” he grinned.  “And I like shagging lots of different women!”

Sean and Sophie revelled in their privacy during their break away from the band and the others.  It was so nice to leave the stress and tension behind and not have to worry about doing or saying something that would upset one of the others, namely James.

The hotel was beautiful, they enjoyed the countryside and being able to talk and laugh or just spend time in the same room whilst one listed to a radio play and the other read a book, yet for Sophie, something was missing.  The sex was no longer magical.  Yes it was good, but it wasn’t awesome like it had been.  Had they settled for comfortable now they’d become a couple?

“Sean honey” she whispered, stroking her fingertips over his nipples and then blowing gently on them to make them grow and harden.  “Fancy playing for a while?”
“Baby, we don’t have to make love whenever we’re alone and in bed you know.  We’re together now so we can have nice sex, we don’t have to ‘play’ as you put it.”
She could feel her temper brewing.  “Nice sex!  I want rampant exciting fucking sex Sean, like we used to have when we had to steal time to be together.  Has the fun and spontaneity gone so fucking soon?”
“No it hasn’t,” he smiled, tilting her chin so that she was looking at him.  “That kind of sex is good but I want to make love to you slowly and drive you crazy with passion and desire.  I love being with you and all I want to do is let you know how much I appreciate you.”

Sophie smiled and kissed him, then settled her head on his chest and tried to sleep but her heart was heavy.  Perhaps she had made a bad mistake by divorcing James.  He understood the importance of torrid quickies and letting passion and fun get the better of you and making sex enjoyable rather than a chore.  She knew that Sean meant well, but she needed more stimulation.

“Are you ok Sophie?” asked Richey with concern when he saw her sitting alone gazing at her hands, which she was wringing anxiously.  “You look a little lost.”
“Things Richey, just things.  Why, would you like to gloat?”
“Hey, you know me better than that,” he said sombrely, joining her on the bench.  “A trouble shared and all that…”
“I’ve made a dreadful mistake Richey, I still love James.”
“I did wonder.”
“Oh?”
“The way you stare at him and watch him move and you’ve never been really alive while you’ve been with Sean.”

She sniggered at the irony of it all.  She and Sean had been convinced that they could take the moral high ground when they caught James and Rhian having an affair but even though they waited to start their relationship up again, it wasn’t the same.  Sean wasn’t prepared to put the effort in to make it special anymore… Instead of hitting the jackpot she had settled for second best and she was bored witless.

“You and Sean, it was happening before wasn’t it?”  His voice was soft and not at all judgmental.
“Yes,” she didn’t bother asking how he knew.  “I thought I loved him but actually, I don’t.”
“You’re not fickle Sophie; it must have been something special for you to have put your relationship with James at risk, especially as it was with his cousin.”  He gave a little smile, no acrimony or judgement present.
Sophie sighed heavily.  “Richey, what do you want me to say?  It wasn’t easy but I was drawn to him.  He would whisper things so that James couldn’t hear, things he’d like to do,” she giggled nervously.  “I may be an adult but I guess I fell for the oldest trick in the book – flattery and daring.  James and me have always had a good physical relationship and we would have ‘flirting days’; days when all we could do was flirt.  By night-time we were going crazy!  Sean rivalled that.  I was stupid, so very fucking stupid.”

“He still loves you,” Richey said quietly, nudging her with his elbow.  “All is not lost but you’ll have to work for it.  As much as he wants you back, he’s really hurting.”
“Maybe I should just accept what I have.  It’s my fault I’m in this position.”
“Think how miserable both you and Sean will be if you stay together because of guilt.  Oh for sure you’ll make a martyr out of yourself but for what end?  So that everyone can lose.”

“Richey, I know that you don’t need to know this but Sean and I didn’t sleep together once we caught James and Rhian, until we went away that weekend.  I had time to change my mind and re-evaluate things then.”
“Did you have doubts?”
“Yes, a few, but mostly because the pain that I was causing James hit me, and the realisation of what I would be letting go.  I put it down to concern about a possible cataclysmic fall out in the family, but it was more personal than that.”
“You need to tell him, tell both of them.”

“I know,” she sighed a shaky smile quivering on her lips.  “I’m prepared to lose it all Richey, I have to be because it will take a hell of a lot for James to take me back after the way I've humiliated him.  I’m going to feel the wrath of Bradfield like never before.”
He put an arm around her and hugged her firmly.  “You can do this.”
“Wish I had your confidence.”
“Bite the bullet and you’ll be fine.  James and Sean can’t be harder on you than you are!”
“Thanks for listening to the ramblings of an adulteress.”
“Hey we’ll have less of that, thank you.  I’m always here for you Sophie.  Believe it or not, I can be quite sensible you know!”
