NICKY SAYS THANKS by Janey “I won’t be a minute,” called Callie as she finished loading the washing machine. A few seconds later she was opening the door to a grinning buffoon, bearing gifts. “Nicky!” “Hi ya honey,” he smirked kissing her on her cheeks and then walking straight through to the lounge. “Get the glasses, I’ve bought you a bottle of that red that you like.” “Ok so what are you after?” Callie asked when she joined him with glasses and a corkscrew. “Nothing!” he protested. “I just wanted to thank you for that little favour you did me, that’s all. Now come and sit down and open your pressies.” Callie sat at the opposite end of the couch, the middle taken up by various packages that Nicky had brought with him, she was about to complain at him but he merely pressed his fingers against her lips and mouthed for her to shush. “What I did doesn’t deserve all this Nicky; a bottle of wine would have been more than enough.” Callie couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed at his generosity, and was utterly overwhelmed because she felt so undeserving. “Here, get your lips around this!” he announced making her blush, then thrust a glass of red in front of her. Callie swirled the red wine in the glass briefly and then gave it a sniff. “Umm, I love this wine; it’s like grown up Ribena, very fruity!” “Umm,” murmured Nicky watching her sip and savour the wine. “ I should have decanted it first.” “Give it a quick swirl to oxygenate it and it will be fine; better than fine.” She smiled and chinked her glass against his. “Thank you for this.” Nicky grinned stupidly, not trusting himself to answer her. Callie whooped in delight with each gift she opened. He had bought her a couple of books that she wanted, some fridge magnets and other silly bits and pieces, as well as an expensive box of handmade chocolates. “Oh Nicky, thank you so much!” she beamed, kissing him at the corner of his mouth. “Fancy coming round one night to help me demolish these choccies?” “They’re all yours.” “Well I insist you have at least one and I know which one it should be!” she declared carefully undoing the ribbon and fancy packaging and taking out one of the chocolates, and holding it against his lips. “I insist. Now bite!” “Umm,” moaned Nicky as he bit into it and the liquid centre trickled onto his lips. He did his best to collect it all with his tongue but had missed a bit. “Let me,” sighed Callie dangerously leaning into him and running a finger against his quivering lips several times. “There, all gone now,” and she slipped her finger into his mouth for him to lick the remaining confection off. Nicky stared at her, his heart beating 19 to the dozen and confusion coursing through his body. His thinking was muddied and uncertain. What exactly was he supposed to do now? Callie broke the tension by smiling at him, a smile that always made him feel better. “Penny for them,” she said. “Oh nothing interesting, don’t worry.” “I’m not worried but curious,” she giggled nervously. “You look like a teenager in some ways right now.” Nicky laughed out loud, he couldn’t help it. “Oh Callie! What are you like?” “You seem all kind of dreamy and reflective; relaxed yet uncertain, yes I know it’s a paradox but there you go.” “There’s a reason for that,” he simpered, not taking his gaze away from her. “Really?” she asked allowing him to take her hand in his. Nicky smirked at her then tenderly cupped her face and lowered his lips down onto hers; they sighed when their lips lightly pressed together. When they separated Callie rubbed her nose to his and wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders. “I have wanted to do that for so long,” offered Nicky. “I’m glad you finally did.” “Me too.” They giggled like soppy kids and cuddled up together, enjoying the simplicity of being able to hold each other and kiss freely; hidden emotions finally out in the open.
