PHOTOS
Late Update: February 8, 2007
On this page are a few photos from my experiences in Vietnam and Taiwan.  Since 1995, I've traveled to Vietnam several times for research and study, spending collectively about a year there.   I lived in Taiwan from 2000-2001 while teaching and studying there.
Here I am in what I consider my 'hometown,' the Washington DC area
Here I am hard at work.
The Pacoh People: Ethnic Minorities in Vietnam
Here are some Pacoh people (except myself naturally), very nice people in Vietnam with whom I studied the Pacoh language to write my Ph.D. dissertation "A Pacoh Analytic Grammar".  Pacoh is spoken by perhaps 10 to 15 thousand people, so it is rapidly approaching the level of a very endangered language.
I don't think I'd better try to get a government job with THIS photo floating around!  Since the 1990s, the infamous Cu Chi tunnels, from which the Viet Cong fought with Americans, are a tourist site where this picture was taken in 1995 during my first visit to Vietnam.  I am sitting at the Viet Cong "commander's" table.
Taiwan: A Sample of Chinese Culture
Here's a bird's-eye view of Yenshui, the small town in Taiwan where I lived for the academic year 2000-1.  The picture was taken from my apartment, on the seventh floor.  Would you believe that this area is considered 'rural' (Xiang Xia) in Taiwan
Here's the view from the other side of my apartment overlooking the Wumiao Temple.  Ceremonies take place there on a regular basis, at least once a week, sometimes starting very, very early in the morning (what a way to start the day!).
This is a martial arts demonstration outside the Wumiao temple.  The red on this man's face and chest is NOT red paint.  Don't worry though.  It's more show than pain, I think.
