Any recognised coarse coated cavy can be satinised, as long as it conforms to the Australian Standard for that particular breed.

There are very few satin coarse coated cavies being exhibited in Australia - mainly for the reasoning that a satin cavy is meant to have a soft coat (satinisation softens the coat) - where as each of the coarse coated breeds call for a harsh coat.

A satin coarse coated cavy will either be penalised for being a satin with a harsh coat, or being a coarse coated cavy with a soft coat (which is a written fault in each standard).

The current standard for coarse coated cavies being satised makes no allowance for the coat texture being harsh (as it should in order to conform to the appropriate standard).  However, the standard is in the process of being reviewed so that these cavies will not be unduely penalised.

The most commonly seen satin coarse coated cavies are the abyssinians.
