The satin gene effects the hair shaft and makes it appear hollow - so that it catches and reflects the light. It gives an extra shine and sheen to the coat, as well as softening it. |

A cavy can not be "part" satin. Either the coat is satinised or it isnt. A cavy carrying satin will show no sign of being from satin lines, than those who are not. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Something to note is that dark coloured animals generally are not specifically satinised for the simple fact that the satinisation does not show on these colours. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
A satin baby can be spotted from birth as the satinisation shows clearly - as seen in this satin crested PE white baby, less than an hour old. |

Unlike some characteristics that cavies can posess (such as a crest) the satin gene can be carried, and can still be even if many generations back. satin carrier x non satin carrier = 50% satin carriers, 50% non satin carriers satin carrier x satin carrier = 25% satin, 50% satin carriers, 25% non satin carriers satin x non satin carrier = 100% satin carriers satin x satin carrier = 50% satin, 50% satin carriers satin x satin = 100% satin Please note that these are estimates (not including those 100%). For example, breeding satin x carrier, can result in all satins, all carriers or a mixture of each. It is impossible to tell physically if a cavy is a satin carrier or not - the only way to do this would be through a "test" mating to a satin cavy - if a satin baby is produced, then the cavy is definately a satin. However, if no satins are produced, it is still possible to be a carrier - confusing I know! |
