This group, as the name suggests, are those breeds which have very long hair. The hair grows to an average of 12 inches (30cm), but can grow anywhere up to 20 inches (50cm). |

The hair grows at an average length of one ince (3cm) per month and needs to be looked after very strickly to avoid tangles and knots - being regularly bathed, brushed and blowdried. |

To keep the coat to a show standard, exhibitors "wrap" the coat daily to stop the hair flowing loose and to avoid woodchips and other foreign items getting caught in the coat. |

When a longhair is kept for showing, its generally kept on its own (or in a partitioned cage) to prevent other cavies chewing its coat (a chewed coat is a major fault). When they are bred from their coats are generally cut short. |

Longhairs can be any colour, however there are very few totally white cavies (or white bottomed) shown as the coat is quite easily stained. Although a top show cavy is chosen due to its coat and other qualities, lovely coat colour / pattern often makes for a very striking cavy. |
