left, a photo I took of a beautiful roaned abby "Champion Leander Edsel", owned by Karen Nichols of Leander Stud, NSW

This abyssinian is often referred to as the "abby  They can be exhibited with any coat
colour or pattern - the most common being the
Torti & White, or Roan.

"Champion Wyndamete Hamlet"

The abby's coat is made up from 8 rosettes.  4 rosettes form a direct line across the body forming a "saddle" and "side" rosettes.  2 rosettes are on the hip and the final 2 are on the rump.

Shoulder rosettes are optional, and are not to be penalised if present. (creating 10 rosettes).

The hair on the cheeks lie forward producing a "moustache" and the hair on the head should stand upright.

right - an example of an abby's ridges & rosettes, "Chinoise Kabuki".  Photo by Amanda of Chinoise Cavies, NSW.

The rosettes should be in straight lines, so that straight erect ridges are formed, giving the coat a harsh, spikey appearance.
A "centre ridge" runs along the spine from
collar to rear.
The "collar ridge" goes over the shoulders
at right angle to the centre ridge.
A "back ridge" goes over the hips and back and is parallel to the collar ridge.
The 2 "side ridges" run parallel to the centre ridge on either side of the body.

Common breed faults are:
Double rosettes (2 centres on the same rosette), Split rosettes, flatness anywhere on the coat, rosettes with open centres, twisted ridges (not straight), additional rosettes.
