The first thing I noticed; upon inspection of my car with the wheels
off; is there's a spacer behind each rim on the front and back. Initially
- my opinion was that the tires rubbed on thhe front. I took the spacers
off, and I can still do full lock-to-lock without any problems, and there's
still quite a bit of clearance there. The back was the strange part. It's
got 80 Z-28 rims on it, and apparently; the backspacing is incorrect. With
a p255 tire on the rim; it only clears the frame rails by about 1/8 of
an inch, which so happens to be the EXACT width of the spacer. I wonder
how many trial and error runs had to be done to discover this?
Canadian? Unless you've gotten your car from a LOL (little old lady) or from a southern state, your frame rails will most likely be rotten. To do a simple test, put your foot on the rear bumper and push down. The bumper come away from the body? Most likely the frame rails are rotten. It's POSSIBLE, that the body mount(s) are broken, however not likely. Step on the bumper in three places. Left, right, and middle. Left side goes down? Left side's rotten. Right side goes down? Right side's rotten. Entire bumper goes down? How much do you love your car? It'll probably cost you around a grand (cdn.) in total to get both sides fixed. Generally; if you get it fixed; the person fixing it will find a bunch of other crap busted underneath. I was talking to a guy who had a Monte Carlo; and he's had the rails done twice - and they're starting to sag again. Make sure you pick a reputable shop to fix them for you. Someone who's not going to make it worse than it already is. When mine were done (before I bought the car, a little bit positive, a little bit negative) the person doing it must have used the world's biggest cutting torch to do so. The wheelwells are all cut to hell.
