Revisiting the Enchanted Land

Disclaimer/Author’s Notes: I don’t own Labyrinth.  Labyrinth and its characters belong to Jim Henson.  Hellaka and Leetris belong to me. I greatly apologize, but in most fics, Karen is the likely name for Sarah’s stepmother, I don’t know what her father’s name is so I created a name, Richard.  If you think his name should be something else, please let me know and I’ll make the changes.  Also I don’t know where the setting of Sarah’s town is so I’m going to create my own town setting.

Playing Charades

In the living room, the man lying on the couch finally stirred and woke.  He finally had regained his strength.  At first his senses were off, he didn’t know where he was but it didn’t take him long to realize that he was at the William residence, home of Sarah Williams.  He sat up with no difficulty this time and noticed a note slipped under his torso.  He picked it up and read it.

            Jareth,

By now, you must have regained your strength.  If you did not realize, you are in my home.  I lied for you last night by saying that you and I have been on a couple dates and you showed up at the door, seeking help.  Which is actually more to the truth other than the dating part.  What ever you do, please go along with this story.  I don’t need my stepmother getting on my case about you especially if she was to learn the real truth of our acquaintance.

Sarah

Jareth faintly smiled at the way Sarah lied to her parents.  If it wasn’t for the fact that I need my kingdom back, Jareth thought.  I would enjoy this charade.  Within a few moments, he heard some noises coming from the other room.  Deciding the couch wasn’t the best place to be, he got up and went into the next room, the kitchen, where he found Karen trying to feed her baby son, Toby.

“Good morning,” Karen said.  “You look a lot better than last night.  In fact, other than a few bruises and cuts plus also your clothing, you seemed like last night never happened.”

“Yes,” Jareth agreed.  “I’ve always been able to do that.”

“Sarah should be coming down any minute.  I better let her know that you are awake.”  Karen walked out of the kitchen leaving Toby with Jareth.

While Karen was gone, Jareth watched the Toby with wonder.  The baby was oblivious to Jareth’s presence as he played with his food that was on his table.  Jareth couldn’t help but smile at Toby.  It was gentle smile not like his evil, conning smile that he had in the Labyrinth.  That smile had been washed away when Leetris took his throne.  Moments later, Karen reentered the kitchen with Sarah in tow.  Sarah slightly nodded to Jareth and continued to do her normal morning routine.

“Good Morning Sarah,” Jareth said trying to strike up conversation with the girl.

“Good Morning Jareth,” Sarah said.  She didn’t even look up as she made her breakfast.  “Karen, just want to let you know now, in case I’m late for school and the school calls but I’m taking Jareth with me back to his apartment before getting to school.”

“Can’t Jareth make it to his home by himself?” Karen asked.

“Karen, people who attacked Jareth will be looking for him.  I doubt they would attack him in broad daylight with someone with him,” Sarah said.

Just then her father walked in and sat down at the kitchen table beside Sarah, Karen was on the other side of him with Toby, and grabbed the morning paper.

“Richard,” Karen called to her husband.  “Couldn’t you drive Jareth back to his apartment?”

“No!” Jareth and Sarah said at once looking straight at each other.  Except for Toby’s baby garble, you couldn’t even hear a pin drop.  Karen and Richard looked at Sarah and Jareth.

“Why not?” Karen asked getting over the command.

“Well…because…” Sarah tried to explain.

“Because,” Jareth came up in Sarah’s defense, “Sarah has met these people before and she knows how to intimate them.  More than likely they are camping in front of the apartment building waiting to attack me again.  And if I’m with anyone else besides Sarah, they will attack my companion.”

Sarah stared wide-eyed at Jareth’s story.  She couldn’t believe that he was actually going along with the charade, almost as if he was enjoying himself.  But that was impossible, he wanted to get himself back on the throne and he would do everything he could to accomplish that task, even it meant being friendly with his enemy.

“All…right,” Richard said.  “You may have a point.  Sarah, you may take Jareth home but get to school as soon as you can.  Exams are coming and if you want to be in the drama play, you had better make good marks on the exams.”

“Jareth,” Sarah finally said once she was finished her breakfast.  “Would you like some breakfast before we go?”

“No,” he said.  “That’s ok.  I’ll wait until later.  What’s the drama play on?”

“I’ll explain later,” Sarah said.  It’s getting late, I better get going.”  Sarah got up, removed her dishes and proceeded towards the living room.  Jareth took his cue and exited behind her.

When the two were out of earshot, Sarah turned to Jareth.  “Thank you,” she said.  “If it wasn’t for the fact that I know what’s at stake, I would have thought you were enjoying this pretending game.”

“I would, but I’m not taking the pleasure of it,” Jareth said.  “There’s something I must tell you about my family.”

“I already know,” Sarah said turning away from Jareth.  “Your sister came to my dreams again and told me.  She told me that you are half human and that your mother was the daughter of a sorceress and why your eldest sister wants the throne.”

“Some days, I wish Hellaka would just stay out of things.”

“She believes that if I know what I’m, we’re, up against the better.  Especially if your eldest sister were to find out that I was the one who defeated you.”

“Come, we better get going, before your family over hears us,” Jareth said.  He moved past Sarah towards the foyer of the house and proceeded outside, leaving Sarah standing in the living room.  When she realized that he left, she ran out the door, forgetting her book bag.

(So what you think?   Are Sarah and Jareth going to be able to stop Leetris or are they going to need help from new friends?)
