Chapter 2 – Keeper of Dreams

Sarah slept for a few hours without a dream but soon she fell into one, but this it wasn’t of Jareth dieing.  She entered a gray room with a white mist on the ground.  Through the shadows, Sarah was able to see a figure moving.  The body was moving towards her with grace.  When the person was close enough, Sarah could see that it was the same woman who showed her Jareth and she was wearing the same dress.

“Sarah, do not be alarmed.  I now can tell you who I am.  My name is Hellaka, Jareth’s good sister,” the woman said with a gentle voice.  The reason I couldn’t tell you who I was before was because you first needed to free my brother.  I am the Keeper of Dreams that is why I can invade your dreams but I normally don’t do that but I was desperate.”

“Why?” Sarah asked.

“That is easy,” a voice said from behind.  Sarah turned to see it was Jareth.  Since it was a dream, Jareth was dressed in his kingship with gray pants and black boots.  He wore his usual white poetic shirt opened to reveal his chest but no medallion.  His hair was in the usual trademark, blond and spiked.  He looked as if he was still King of Goblins and the Labyrinth.

“How are you here?” Sarah asked in shock.

Amused at Sarah’s stunned face he answered.  “Here in dreams one can dress they way they want.  And as to why I’m here, what you see is real.  When we wake in the morning, we’ll be refreshed as if this never happened,” Jareth explained.  “As I already explained to you, I…we need your help to get the Labyrinth back.”

“I was also a prisoner in the castle,” Hellaka said, “but with my powers, I was able to escape the evil clutches of our sister, Leetris.  You must return of the Labyrinth and help regain the throne back.  Did Jareth tell you about the prophecy?”

“What prophecy?”

Hellaka turned to look at her brother.  Jareth shrugged, “Hadn’t had the time yet.”

“There’s a prophecy in the Underground that says ‘the first person to defeat the Labyrinth and its king, will have to help him if the Labyrinth ever becomes endangered.”

Sarah looked to Jareth putting her hands on her hips.  “Then why did you practically beg me?”

“If you knew the prophecy, it would have scared you more than you already are,” Jareth said a little too leisurely.

Sarah was taken aback from his comment.  He cared enough not to scare her then she already was.  Shacking her head, she decided to change the subject.  She turned back to Hellaka and asked, “What does your sister want with the Labyrinth?” She wanted questions answered and she was going to get them before she was to return to the waking world.

“Leetris is the oldest and therefore believes she should rule the land of the Labyrinth.  But now she wants to rule all of the Underground.”

“The whole Underground?”

“There are other lands beside the Labyrinth with the Goblin city.  In the Underground all the people are Fae’s except for Jareth who is actually our half brother.  We all have the same father which makes Jareth half fae.  Since Jareth is only half fae and half human, Leetris believes he shouldn’t have been offered the throne.”

“Jareth is half human?” Sarah gasped turning back to Jareth again.  Jareth stayed silent.

“Yes, his mother was full human.  A long time ago, his mother fell into the Underground by an evil sorceress.  She wasn’t meant to travel through the Labyrinth.  At that time the sorceress didn’t know there was a Labyrinth until it was too late.  The Goblin King felt bad for the woman and he soon learned that she was a European princess, though I cannot remember what country.

“Within time, the King fell in love with her and he offered her his castle and she took the offering without a second thought and became immortal.  Once the princess became Queen, she took revenge on the sorceress, who was her mother, and made her go through the Labyrinth.  Of course the sorceress failed and was turned into a creature for her failure and jealously.  Jealously is what made her throw her daughter into the Labyrinth in the first place.”

“If…Jareth is your half sister,” Sarah said.  “That would mean…”

“I’m also older than him.  My mother died during childbirth and when the princess met the Goblin King she fell in love with me.  When she became queen, she gave me powers and turned me into the keeper of dreams.  By the time Jareth was born, I was already Keeper of Dreams.”

“What happened to the Goblin Queen?”

“No one really knows.  She still could be alive but we don’t know exactly.  She disappeared shortly after the King passed his kingship to Jareth.  I believe Leetris had something to do with it.”

“I wouldn’t put it pass her to be involved of my mother’s disappearance,” Jareth hissed.

“Why are you telling me all of this?”

“You need to know what your up against and to understand the family history.  I soon have to send you back to the waking world.  Eventually we’ll cross paths either on Earth or the Underground.  Before venturing back to the Labyrinth to try and retake it, you’ll need to find new allies.”

“Hellaka,” Jareth asked.  “You have always been good to me and I’ve been good to you.  Please tell me, how can you help when you stay in dreams?”

“Brother.  You should know by now the Dream realm doesn’t evolve around the Underground.  I have allies here that can help.  As long as I stay free, Leetris will never find the entrance to the realm.  And now that you are free, I can return to my realm and Leetris will not find the entrance as of yet.”

“I’m sorry for asking so many questions,” Sarah said, “but I’m not sure I follow you there.”

This time Jareth decided to answer before his sister could.  “When our father passed me the kingship, he passed me the key to the Dream Realm.  When I’m free, the realm is too.  Before you wished me free, Hellaka could only stay safe in your dreams.  She could not return home.  Only the royal family who holds the key may enter the realm other than the subjects of the realm.”

“It is time for me to go.  Both of you take care of each other and between the two of you, you can prevail but you have to place your differences aside.  For the time being, you’ll have to forget that you ever defeated him.  If Leetris was to find out that you are the one who defeated him, then she’ll be able to destroy you. Good-bye for now.”  Hellaka vanished leaving Jareth and Sarah alone, allowing Sarah to be able to control her dream.

Hellaka was now able to return to her home and when she returned her faithful servant, trusted advisor and friend was there to greet her at the gates to the Realm of Dreams.

“Milady.”

Hellaka turned to see her friend, a talking Pegasus.  “Yes, Icewind,” she said.

“It is good to see you again,” he said.  “We were so worried that your evil sister would find the entrance to this place.”

“I was to, Icewind.  But thank’s to Sarah, I’m free and so is Jareth.  I just hope we can stop my sister before she finds out who Sarah is.”

The two turned and allowed the gates to open to reveal a beautiful land with all sorts of colors of blues, greens, yellows and more.  In the distance a castle stood.  The castle was the color of sea green with sapphire gems all around the top.  It was shaped like an ancient Arabian palace.  Hellaka was happy to be home, though she knew there was her sister to stop.

Back in Sarah’s dream, Sarah and Jareth stood where Hellaka disappeared.  For several minutes Sarah didn’t know what to do and kept silent.  Finally enough with the silence she asked, “What do we do from here?”

“Well we are still here, so that means my sister is allowing you to control your own dream,” Jareth said.

“Meaning I can make it to whatever I want it to be?” Sarah asked.

Jareth smiled his answer.  For the next couple hours, Sarah went off on her own to a beautiful meadow, wearing a poetic gown like Hellaka’s.  Jareth stayed and watched her.

After awhile, Sarah heard a sound from a distance but quickly learned that it was her alarm clock, waking her up.  Jareth and the room started to disappear.  As she started to wake, she noticed that the sun was shining in her room.  It was now Saturday, the day of the parade and to face her parents with the explanation of Jareth.  She got up to start her usual day.  There were still a few unanswered questions.  Though Hellaka answered most of the questions, there were still a few that only he could answer.

The third installment of the new revised version of “Revisiting the Enchanted Land” is now complete.  Stand tuned to the next installment, not sure when that will be though but hopefully not too long.
