My Larry Story

Of all my favorite Main Street memories, this is one of my all time favorites.

Larry was Bartending when I first started waiting tables. Some folks may have not cared for him, but at towards the end of his career there he showed me that he was able to think about other people. At one point Larry was starting to need some nights off, and after I had been there for a few months, he trusted me enough to let me bartend on the slowest night. This was exciting for me, to move up the ladder so to speak and to have the whole place to myself was just fun, even though most Tuesday nights there was hardly anyone that came in.

On this one Tuesday evening, around 11ish there was not a soul but me. I was keeping myself busy by cleaning behind the bar when the back door opened and in stepped Larry. Right behind him were two, very large black guys wearing Washington Redskin Jersey's. I saw the number 36 on this one guy and knew immediately who it was. I was freaking, Larry introduced us and I stood behind that bar shaking like a teenager meeting her favorite movie star!

I started to carry on about how the Redskins have always been my favorite team, all my life and here I am a Texan, born and breed and it makes no sense. I had served them a drink and could not keep from going on and on about them. And there we all were, and no one else in the bar to share my excitement and me blabbing my mouth off. As they were getting ready to leave, Timmy Smith reached up and grabbed his cap and motioned me over and leaned across the bar and put it on my head! Oh my GOD! They left and I was in shock as I could not believe what just happened. It was so cool and to this day that cap hangs on my wall and is one of my most prized possessions.

Timmy Smith had come into town to see his family and Larry had run into the guys at the local strip club, Players. Larry had remembered about how I felt about the Redskins and brought those guys up to the bar just so I could meet them. It was one of the coolest things that anyone had done for me, so thank you Larry!

The Cap  given to me my Timmy Smith, right off his head!
