Paine

Asteroid 5188 Paine was discovered on October 15, 1990 by American astronomer Eleanor F. "Glo" Helin at Palomar Observatory near Pauma Valley, California. It has a period of 4 years, 53 days This asteroid was named for Dr. Thomas O. Paine (1921-1992), who was director of NASA from March 1969 to October 1970, that is, at the time of the Apollo 11 mission, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon.

Astrologically, though, asteroid Paine seems to indicate what its name suggests: pain, possibly sadism or obnoxiousness.

Female minor-league baseball player Ila Borders, who endured intense and continued harassment from male teammates and fans, has Paine sextile Odysseus (a long road), square Chiron (a maverick, a door-opener), trine Venus (values) and Jupiter (athletics, philosophy, religion), quincunx Damocles (pushing the envelope, danger) and Heracles (to strive against).

Juanita Slusher aka Candy Barr, a famous exotic dancer of the 1950s and 1960s who waged a bruising battle against conservative Texas mores and is now disabled and in chronic pain at last report, has Paine in the sixth house of work and health, on the Descendant, square Dolon (grace under fire)and trine 1999 XX143 (black-sheep or bad-girl behavior).

Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of television, who had to fight long and hard against corporate bandits for such recognition as he got, never became rich from his invention, and reportedly didn't want his own children watching TV, had Paine conjunct 1998 BU48 (the way things are), sextile Elatus (self-expression, misrepresentation), square Pandora (to have an impact, unintended consequences, gifted), trine Pallas (inventive) and Memnon (to make a new beginning), and quincunx 2002 AW197 (widespread and complex changes, effect on many people).

Tomás de Torquemada

Tom DeLay, a notorious partisan Republican militant, has Paine trine Mercury (speech, writing), Memnon and 2002 TX300 (unpolished or crude viewpoint).

Paul Shanley, a renegade Catholic priest and infamous pederast who helped found NAMBLA, has Paine conjunct Venus (love), Asbolus (to be listened to), and Antenor (antisocial or subversive behavior), semisquare Sun (to shine, to show leadership), square Cruithne (to stigmatize), trine Nessus (predation, lust) and quincunx Pluto (mass movements, nefarious activity).

Torey Hayden, an author and educator of disturbed children, has Paine conjunct Cruithne, square 2002 TX300 (simple or unrefined), trine Thersites (to say no, to attack), Elatus and 2002 AW197, and quincunx Actor (to take action).

On March 18, 1937, at 3:08 p.m., the London Junior-Senior High School (now West Rusk High School) in New London, Texas was leveled by an explosion caused by a spark created when a shop teacher plugged in an electric sander igniting an accumulation of natural gas in the basement coming from a leaky pipe at the entrance to the school gym. In those days, no odorant was required to be added to natural gas, which is odorless, and 311 students and teachers were killed by the blast. As a direct result of this tragedy, the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates oil and gas production in the state, took the highly influential step of requiring a foul-smelling chemical (usually ethyl mercaptan) to be added to natural gas, liquefied propane and butane, and other fuel gases to serve as a warning of leakage. As for the emotional impact, think the Oklahoma City federal-building bombing crossed with Columbine—it may give you some idea of how people in northeast Texas still feel about the disaster: New London was and is a small town; the local adolescent population was decimated. Paine was on the Midheaven in the tenth house, semisquare Saturn (schools), sextile Hektor (bravery), Agamemnon (sudden deadly events) and Actor, square Ceres (loss) and quincunx Boucolion (rural areas, a typically rural viewpoint).

The glyph for Paine is my own creation.
