Old Joe

Asteroid 10515, Old Joe, was discovered on October 31, 1989 by Brian Manning at Stakenbridge, Worcestershire, England, UK, and has a period of 4 years, 43 days. It was named for the Joseph Chamberlain Clock Tower at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England, on the occasion of the university's centennial in 2000. The students call the clock tower "Old Joe."

"Old Joe"

Astrologically, Old Joe seems to get at least part of its meaning from the song whose lyrics are reproduced below. "Old Black Joe" was written in 1860 by Stephen Foster, who also was the author of such classic American tunes as "Camptown Races," "Old Folks At Home" (the Florida state song), "Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair" and the Confederate-associated song "Dixie". (Ironically, Foster was a Northerner, a Pittsburgh native who wrote the last song in a New York boardinghouse.)

Old Joe seems to relate to nostalgia, reaction or feeling left behind by change.

"Old Black Joe"

Gone are the days

When my heart was young and gay.

Gone are my friends

From the cotton fields away.

Gone from this place,

To a better land I know.

I hear their gentle voices calling:

Old Black Joe.

I'm coming, I'm coming

For my head is bending low

I hear their gentle voices calling

Old Black Joe.

Why do I weep

When my heart should feel no pain

Why do I sigh

That my friends come not again

Grieving for forms

Now departed long ago

I hear their gentle voices calling:

Old Black Joe.

I'm coming, I'm coming

For my head is bending low

I hear their gentle voices calling

Old Black Joe.

Where are the hearts

Once so happy and so free

The children so dear

That I held upon my knee

Gone to the shore

Where my soul has longed to go

I hear their gentle voices calling:

Old Black Joe.

I'm coming, I'm coming

For my head is bending low

I hear their gentle voices calling

Old Black Joe.

Herbert Hoover had Old Joe semisquare Vesta (dedication), sextile Pandora (having an impact, unintended consequences) and 1999 XX143 (one's role in society), and quincunx Pholus (initiation into something). Thrown out of the White House in the 1932 election for refusing to use government resources more vigorously and extensively to combat the Depression, Hoover still could use

Phyllis Schafly, who advocates a very conservative—some would say Neanderthal—vision of women's roles, has Old Joe in the third house of speaking and writing, sextile Hidalgo (to assert, to promote, to defend) and 1999 OX3 (practical knowledge), square the Ascendant and quincunx Agamemnon (to do what one feels has to be done).

Ronald Reagan has Old Joe in the third house also, sextile Mercury (speeches, writings, ideas), square Thersites (refusing and resisting, to rail against), trine Neptune (idealism, delusion), Hidalgo, and 2002 TX300 (an unsophisticated way of thinking and acting), quincunx Astyanax (necessary sacrifices), and opposite Okyrhoe (loyalty to one's own needs).

Donald Rumsfeld, who advocates an imperial pre-Vietnam vision of America's role in the world, has Old Joe in the eighth house of legacies, conjunct Pluto (power, coercion) and Chariklo (need to keep perspective), sextile 1994 TA (pollution) and 2000 EC98 (ungrounded), square Uranus (departure from a perceived norm) and Askalaphus (the media) ,trine Nessus (predatory, need to heal greed and anger) and quincunx 2002 TX300.

Buzz Aldrin, who has advocated increased space travel and exploration for years and who has sometimes had to deal with flat-earthers who refuse to believe that humans walked on the moon, has Old Joe in the sixth house, on the Descendant, conjunct 2002 TX300 and square Antenor (antisocial behavior) and Memnon (a new beginning).

The glyph for Old Joe is mine.
