Asteroid 9537 Nolan was discovered January 18, 1982 by Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa unit of Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. It has a period of 4 years, 159 days and was named for radar astronomer Michael C. Nolan (born 1963), of the Arecibo Observatory in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
Michael Nolan
Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) once wrote a short story, published in 1917, called "The Man Without A Country," about a foolish young 19th-century U.S. Army officer named Philip Nolan (not a real person) stationed at a frontier fort who has a bizarre sentence passed on him during a court-martial arising from an unwise alliance with disgraced vice-president Aaron Burr (a real person). Nolan blurted out that he never wanted to hear the name of the United States again, and had that rammed down his throat: he was condemned to spend the rest of his life on ships at sea, never being allowed to see or hear the name of the United States or any reference to it again. And did he love his country? Indeed he did.
Astrologically, Nolan seems to have to do with repudiation or rejection, the disproving of perceptions or myths..
Jane Fonda
Jane Fonda, who is still being condemned for her 1970 trip to Hanoi to protest the Vietnam War, and also protested the Second Persian Gulf War, has Nolan in the ninth house of philosophy and things foreign, sextile 1999 CZ118 (making a crucial choice, the road less traveled), square Chiron (self-wounding), trine the Ascendant (personal interests), quincunx Nessus (predatory), and opposite Saturn (consequences) and Odysseus (long-distance travel).
Adherence to the enemies of one's nation, giving them aid and comfort: Vidkun Quisling, Norwegian collaborator with the German occupation during World War II.
Lee Harvey Oswald, John F. Kennedy's assassin, once tried to defect to the Soviet Union, which refused to take him. Oswald had Nolan in the seventh house of open enemies, sextile Sekhmet (zeal, destruction considered appropriate) and 1999 OX3 (cunning, termination), square Cyllarus (able to act on one's own behalf), trine Chariklo (need to keep perspective), and opposite Thersites (saying no).
Beat poet Ted Joans, a Cairo, Illinois native who ended up leaving the country, eventually dying in Canada, had Nolan conjunct Mercury (writing), Askalaphus (media coverage) and Chaos, sextile Jupiter (philosophy) and 1994 TA (polluted), and square Heracles (to strive against).
Albert Einstein, born Jewish in Germany, happened to be in California when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. Einstein stayed in the U.S., eventually becoming a citizen, and never returned to Germany. He became a beloved figure in the US, becoming instrumental in the defeat of Japan through his advocacy of the development of the atomic bomb, but was treated with a certain amount of suspicion due to his political views. Einstein had Nolan in the eleventh house of politics and love received, conjunct Chiron (the educator, the door-opener), sextile Cyllarus and 1999 CZ118, square 2002 TC302 (stress, political context) and the Nodes (connections), quincunx Eureka (discovery), and opposite 1992 QB1 (taking stands).
King George III of Britain
Constantine II, the last king of Greece, was exiled from his homeland after supporting, then turning against, its military rulers in the late 1960s; Greeks then decided to abolish their monarchy and become a republic, and still refuse to let him return. He has become quite influential in his exile in London, though. He has Nolan conjunct Cruithne (branded, stigmatized), sextile Pandora (having an impact) and 1998 BU48 (the way things are), trine Pluto, and opposite Ixion (second chances, creating bad karma).
Singer Natalie Maines, who had her public criticism of George W. Bush's war in Iraq blow up in her face, has Nolan sextile Ceres (family, nurturance), trine Asbolus (listened to or not), quincunx Actor (taking action), and opposite Agamemnon (being ambushed).
Richard "Cheech" Marin, who has pretty much left his drug-humor past behind him (yet some people won't forgive him for it), has Nolan conjunct Saturn, square Heracles, trine Chaos, quincunx Agamemnon, and opposite Pholus (courage before power), Askalaphus and 1992 QB1.
Helen Keller
Helen Keller, a deaf-mute lecturer and writer, had Nolan conjunct Uranus (breaking loose) and Ceres, sextile the Sun, 1999 CZ118, and South Node (past conditioning, the path of least resistance), square Vesta (dedication) and Agamemnon (doing what one believes has to be done), trine the North Node (moving forward from the past), and quincunx 2002 VQ94 (to shatter) and 2002 TC302 (part of one's times). The opening of her mind by Annie Sullivan, who managed to teach her language through her sense of touch, was depicted in William Gibson's play The Miracle Worker. Before that, she was a wild animal.
Chris Burke
Mentally retarded actor Chris Burke, another misconception-shatterer regarding the disabled, has Nolan conjunct 1999 TD10 (exuberance), square Pandora and 1992 QB1, trine Chiron, and quincunx Memnon (a new beginning).
The glyph for Nolan is mine.
