Asteroid 8889, Mockturtle, was discovered on July 31, 1994 at Nachi-Katsuura, Wakayama, Japan by Yasuhiro Shimizu and Takeshi Urata. It has a period of 5 years, 106 days.
It was named for the Mock Turtle, a melancholy character from Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking-Glass who told Alice he was once a real turtle, gave her a lot of word-game nonsense about his school days under the sea and serenaded her with a lugubrious song about turtle soup. There is a dish called mock turtle soup, which is imitation turtle soup and uses veal or beef in lieu of sea turtle meat, which was very expensive when mock turtle soup was created in 18th-century Britain, could be hard to find in the US, and is illegal in both countries now, sea turtles being protected by law.
The Mock-Turtle
From Chapter 9 of Through The Looking-Glass:, titled "The Mock Turtle's Story":
They had not gone far before they saw the Mock Turtle in the distance, sitting sad and lonely on a little ledge of rock, and, as they came nearer, Alice could hear him sighing as if his heart would break. She pitied him deeply. `What is his sorrow?' she asked the Gryphon, and the Gryphon answered, very nearly in the same words as before, `It's all his fancy, that: he hasn't got no sorrow, you know. Come on!' So they went up to the Mock Turtle, who looked at them with large eyes full of tears, but said nothing.
Astrologically, asteroid Mockturtle seems to indicate lugubriousness, melancholy, depression, pessimism, self-pity, angst, agita.
Kurt Cobain, founder of Nirvana, had Mockturtle in the fourth house, decile Vesta (dedication, focus), sextile Sun (to shine), Mars (aggression) and Ixion (creating karma, second chances), square Saturn (work, career, rewards and consequences, depression) and Dioretsa (off course, something that sticks), tredecile Neptune (music, drugs), quincunx Juno (marriage, civil rights, public persona) and Asbolus (awful experiences, something to say).
Chris Cornell (born July 20, 1964 in Seattle), the frontman for Soundgarden, another leading Seattle grunge band, has Mockturtle semisextile Mercury (thinking, ideas, speech, writing) and Venus (art, singing), undecimal Elatus (eloquent expression), sextile Jupiter (prosperity), and trine Juno, Pallas (conceptualization), and Chiron (need to pay attention).
Billy Corgan (born March 17, 1967 in Chicago), the frontman for Chicago grunge band Smashing Pumpkins, has been seen as difficult by some; he has Mockturtle sextile Mercury, Lilith (hard to deal with), Chariklo (glamorization), and South Node, tredecile Pluto (mass movements), trine Elatus (eloquent expression), Phaethon (a phenomenon) and North Node, and quincunx Nessus (unpleasant).
Peter Steele (born January 4, 1962 in New York), the frontman for the heavy-metal band Type O Negative, who pens many of the band's dark, eerie, sometimes pagan-themed, sometimes violent or vulgar lyrics, has Mockturtle semisquare Neptune (music, weirdness), sextile Uranus (unconventional) and Ixion, and tredecile Pluto (dark).
Dave Mustaine (born September 13, 1961 in La Mesa, California) is the founder, singer and chief songwriter of the metal band Megadeth, whose songs are a lot more noisy and intense than Type O Negative's and can be even more violent and morbid. Mustaine has Mockturtle sextile the Sun, quintile Pluto, and opposite Varuna (apocalpytic, huge).
Gloomy Victorian novelist George Gissing (born November 22, 1857 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England) had Mockturtle sextile Neptune (imagination, creativity) and Nessus, square Juno (public persona) and sesquiquadrate Mars (aggression).
The glyph for Mockturtle is mine.
