2895 Memnon, a Trojan asteroid associated with Jupiter, was discovered on January 10, 1981 by Norman G. Thomas at the Anderson Mesa unit of Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. It has a period of 11 years, 344 days. Thomas named it for King Memnon of Ethiopia, who brought an army of 10,000 soldiers to Troy to aid his uncle Priam, slew Antilochos and was killed by Achilles. He was turned into a statue in Egypt which faced the east and sang every morning at dawn.
